The provenance of this group of charters and deeds may be traced, for the most part, to the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth. The majority of the Ystrad Marchell charters, other Montgomeryshire deeds, charters of the lords of Powys and Bala Lake deeds almost all relate to lands which eventually came into the ownership of the Vaughans. The Llwydiarth estate was acquired by Wynnstay following the marriage of Anne Vaughan to Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn in 1715. For further details of provenance and history for each group of deeds, see series level descriptions.

It was decided to catalogue the 1945 deposit as a separate small group, since both the Ystrad Marchell charters and several of the other documents bore the same series of ‘in libro’ numbers. These numbers referred to a book seen by W.W.E. Wynne in 1853 but now apparently lost, containing copies of the charters probably made for the purposes of a lawsuit between the Vaughan and the Herberts in the sixteenth century. Also in purely practical terms, the Ystrad Marchell charters had already been listed and they occupied the same set of specially made archival boxes as the remainder of the deeds in the 1945 group.
