Miscellaneous notes and papers of Iolo Morganwg, [18 cent., last ¼]-[1830s], on a variety of subjects, including (mainly Welsh) history (E8/1), religion (E8/2), Welsh and English literature, including Dr Johnson (E8/3), Bardism (E8/4) and biography and genealogy (E8/5); together with further bundles of miscellaneous notes and papers, retained in original order (E8/6-9), with subjects including politics, printing and Poems Lyric and Pastoral, 1784-[c. 1809] (E8/6), patriarchal religion, priestcraft and Lewis Morris (E8/7), poetry and monumental inscriptions (E8/8) and salmau (E8/9); and a case containing notes on Welsh manuscripts in the British Museum and at Jesus College, Oxford (E8/10).

Rolls

Three paper rolls, on rollers, containing four cywyddau by Iolo Morganwg, dated 1799-1810 (E10/1), Welsh poetry by Iolo, including over 100 englynion and forty-two dyrïau, dated 1778-1816 (E10/2) and Iolo's bardic alphabet, [c. 1817] (watermark 1815) (E10/3); together with another blank roll and an empty roller (E10/4-5). Also in the box is a bundle of papers containing a 'Survey for Mr Davies Pantysgallog', [1824] (E10/6); a few miscellaneous maps and drawings (E10/7); and three scraps of parchment, one containing a miniature painting of some goats (E10/8-10).

Transcripts by Thomas Richards and David Richards, etc.

A composite volume comprising three exercise books and insets largely in the hands of Thomas Richards, Darowen and David Richards, Llansilin. The contents include a list of names, ages and dates of death of 176 eminent ecclesiastics ('Cofrestr o Enwau, Oedran ac amser marwolaeth y Gwyr enwog canlynol ... '); a tract, 1753 (transcribed 1822), explaining the reasons for the adoption in Great Britain in 1752 of the Gregorian or New Style Calendar ('... y Rhesymmau amlycaf paham y gwnaed y cyfnewidiad diweddar yn y Flwyddyn, ydys yn alw yr Ysteil newydd'); short biographies of early and late British historians ('Ychydig o hanes yr Awdwyr mwyaf hynod a ysgrifennasant am y Brutaniaid yn yr Ynys hon yn gynar ac yn ddiweddar ...'), based on Joshua Thomas: Hanes y Bedyddwyr, Ymhlith y Cymry... Coelbren y Beirdd,

An English translation by David Howell ('Llawdden') of Taliesin Williams ('Ab Iolo'): Traethawd ar Hynafiaeth ac Awdurdodaeth Coelbren Y Beirdd, ... (Llanymddyfri, 1840), with copious additions and revisions by Thomas Stephens, Merthyr Tudful. A note by J. H. Davies on the fly-leaf states that the translation was made in 1853, at the instance of Thomas Stephens. The original essay was awarded a medal and a prize at the Cymreigyddion y Fenni Eisteddfod, 1838. The end of the text is imperfect, one leaf probably being wanting. The spine is lettered 'Coelbren y Beirdd'.

Biographical notes on Sir Robert Mansel and the Button family; notes on the bardic order, on Margam and on customs, notions, pastimes and diversions prevalent in Glamorgan; lists of manors, notes on abbeys and priories, and a list of bishops of Llandaff. The work is mainly that of William Davies, Cringell, but with additions by Richard Bevan and Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg').

Norden (? from the 1695 edition); two keys to 'Coelbren y Beirdd', the one undoubtedly and the other probably in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'); extensive transcripts of Caernarfonshire and other North Wales pedigrees, mainly in the hands of Owen Williams and John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'); and imperfect notes relating to the history and endowments of the Free School, Dolgellau.

The titles include 'Barddoniaeth a Beirdd' (Llithiau XVIII, XXI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXXI) by [Dafydd Rhys Williams] 'Index', 'Y Diweddar D. Williams, As' [Castell Deudraeth, Merionethshire], 'Y Diweddar Barch. Morris Williams (Nicander)' (several obituary notices), 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir' (his clerical institutions), 'Y Diweddar Barch. Morris Roberts, Remsen, N.Y.', 'Y Proff. Morris D. Jones, Janesville, Wis.', 'Ben. Thomas Williams, Ysw. Yr Aelod Seneddol Newydd dros Fwrdeisdrefi Caerfyrddin a Llanelli', etc. There are two labels laid on the outer upper cover, the one numbered '15' and the other in the hand of 'Myrddin Fardd' inscribed 'Y diweddar Barch. Morris Roberts, Remsen, Richard Jones y Wern a John Elias. - Hanes dyddorol am danynt, yn agos i'r diwedd.' The volume was originally used by 'Myrddin Fardd' to record material on local history, and on some of the pages on which he has not mounted his cuttings there are transcripts of memorial and other inscriptions from Penmorfa [Parish] Church and notes on John Williams, Llecheiddior.

The volume was subsequently used by Mary Richards, Darowen, and, to a lesser extent, by Thomas R. Williams, Bryn Tanad, Llanerfyl, to record transcripts of a list of British kings to George III ('Tabl o holl Frenhinodd Prydain or dechreiad Cyntaf hyd ein Brenin George y IIII) from the Almanac of Thomas Jones, Shrewsbury, 1709; poetry in strict and free metres by E[dward] J[ones] (Periglor Caer Einion) (1875), [Hugh Parry] (Cefni) (Utica, N.Y.)
