Biographical history

Edwin Carter farmed in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, until 1846. He acquired Thornwell farm, Chepstow, through the will, dated 12 August 1834, of Thomas Brigden of Bristol, who had inherited the farm from his uncle Paul Morgan in 1793, a descendant of Henry Morgan who had purchased Thornwell farm in 1694. Carter's heirs resided in Bristol and were brewers in the Clifton area. Much of the estate, including Thornwell farm, was sold in 1906.

Archival history

The archive was transferred to the office of Messrs Ingpen & Armitage of Grays Inn, London, probably before the cause in Chancery between members of the Carter family in 1905. Following the death of H.W. Woodforde, the solicitor who acted on behalf of the estate, the deeds were returned to H. C. Fry, Clevedon, Somerset, the family trustee, in October 1909.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Deposited by Charles H. Fry of Clevedon, Somerset, in 1958 and 1959.
