E. G. Bowen (Emrys George Bowen) (1900-1983) was born at Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, and graduated from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1923, with first class honours in Geography. He then studied for a Masters degree (1926). On his retirement, he lectured on church history. He was deeply interested in historical geography and settlement studies. His first published book was Wales, A Study in Geography and History (1941). His writings covered geography, archaeology, history (especially proto-history of the Dark Ages), culture and society of Wales.
