Sixty-two letters and two postcards, 1869-83 and undated, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend E[dward] L[owry] Barnwell, Melksham, largely concerning Archaeologia Cambrensis, of which D. Silvan Evans was editor, 1871-5. In addition there are three letters to E. L. Barnwell from [the Reverend] Reginald Hughes, Glyn [Ceiriog], 1871, J. H. Le Keux, Durham, 1871, and Richard R. Brash, Cork, 1874, respectively.

Thomas, Cefn Rectory, St Asaph, Meifod Vicarage, Welshpool, Canonry, St Asaph, and Llandrinio Rectory, Oswestry (matters in connection with Archaeologia Cambrensis, the Wrexham Eisteddfod, 1876, church affairs, etc.). Enclosed is a letter, 1873, to D. R. Thomas from H[owel] W[illiam] Lloyd, Clifton, Bristol.

Eight letters, 1858 [?1859]-74, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil, seven of which are addressed to D. Silvan Evans and one to W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (copy). Accompanying one of the letters to D. Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.

Lists of periodicals, etc.,

An exercise-book containing lists of periodicals, etc. (Trysorfa y Plant, Y Drysorfa, Yr Haul, Young Wales, Cylchgrawn, and Monthly Treasury (loose sheet)), with details of the issues available and those wanting. There are also some printed lists of books, some marked with a tick. The lists were probably compiled by Mrs Peter Hughes Griffiths and J. H. Davies.

Llyfr Silin ..,

'Llyfr Silin yn cynnwys achau amryw deuluoedd yn Ngwynedd, Powys, etc', being a bound series of interleaved offprints from Archaeologia Cambrensis, 5th Series, vols IV-VIII (1887-91), passim, of an incomplete text of the Welsh pedigrees in NLW MS 1653 in the hand of John Jenkins ('Ifor Ceri'). J. H. Davies has added holograph notes on John Jenkins's text and on the original 'Llyfr Silin' (NLW MS 1666) and has also included a transcript by him of the list of contents ('Jenkins Ceri's Index') of NLW MS 1653.

Llyfrgell 'Gwilym Cowlyd',

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a chronological list of printed books in Welsh and of Welsh interest, 1599-1886 and undated, being the first lot purchased by him from William John Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') 'a day or two' before the latter's sale [in April 1897]. At the end of the volume, partly in the hand of J. H. Davies, are particulars of gaps in files of newspapers, periodicals, etc. (Y Goleuad, Trysorfa y Plant, Welsh Gazette, and Welsh Piety) in the Cwrtmawr library.
