‘Allt Fawr, etc.’

Title deeds relating firstly to land under Allt Fawr Hill, and secondly to the messuages of Allt Fawr, Cae Glub and Rhos y Glascoed in the townships of Peniarth and Teirtref in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn from John Humffreys of Llwyn, son and executor of William Humffreys, 1773-1811. They include deeds of sale by Ann Jodrell of Ankerwyke, Wraysbury, Buckinghamshire, widow of Gilbert Jodrell, to William Humffreys of Llwyn, of parts of Dyffryn Hall Farm (described) and the land under Allt Fawr Hill 1773; a covenant by Barbara Countess of Powys to William Humffreys to produce deeds, 1773; a mortgage by William Humffreys to Richard Morgan of Shrewsbury, 1774 and the reconveyance by his son, Richard Morgan of West Bromwich, 1795. The deeds for Allt Fawr, Cae Glub and Rhos y Glascoed comprise a succession of assignments of mortgage at the direction of John Humffreys, in which the mortgagees include William Bray and William Clutton, and Pryce Davies, 1800, Catharine Jones, widow of Joshua Jones, late of Trefnannau but then of Oswestry, 1808, and John Phillips of Llwyn and Jeffrey Poole of Trefnannau, 1808. The file concludes with the conveyance by John Humffreys and his mortgagees to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn of all the properties described above, and assignment of the term of years created by the will of William Humffreys, dec., in trust, 1811.

‘Dyffryn’

Title deeds labelled ‘Office copies of title deeds relating to Dyffryn farms and referred to in the covenant of Barbara C’ss of Powis dated 6th Septr 1773’. The deeds concern firstly Rhosfawr and Bysnant, and secondly Dyffryn Hall or Dyffryn Farm, the malthouse or barn called Tycoch on the road from Meifod to Newbridge, a small tenement on Allt yr Ancar Hill, and a wood called the Great Park in the parishes of Meifod and Guilsfield, 1765-1808. They include a mortgage by John Jones of Llanfyllin and his trustees, of property belonging to the Rhosfawr estate to Dorothy Rocke, 1765; the covenant by Barbara Countess of Powis to John Rocke of Trefnannau and his son Richard Rocke of Shrewsbury to produce title deeds, 1773; a conveyance by Ann Jodrell of Ankerwyke, Wraysbury, Buckinghamshire, widow of Gilbert Jodrell of Lincolns Inn, and Gilbert Jodrell’s daughters Sarah and Ann, to John Rocke and Richard Rocke, of the Dyffryn properties, 1773; a mortgage by Richard Rocke, 1787, which was assigned to Ann Acton of of Brockton, Salop, 1797, followed by a further mortgage to her in 1798; a lease to William Payne of Wilcott, Great Ness, 1792, and an assignment of the lease to Samuel Yale, 1800; an agreement between Richard Rocke and Charles Watkin Williams Wynn for the purchase, followed by the deeds of sale of the Rhosfawr and Dyffryn properties, with a schedule of deeds incorporated, and an assignment by the Ann Acton of the term of years in trust, 1803; a mortgage by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn to Richard Rocke, 1803, and a surrender (on dorse) by the latter’s executor, Rev. John Rocke of Shrewsbury, upon repayment of the mortgage, 1808.

‘Main, etc.’

Title deeds relating to the Parry family of Main and Penyvoile, Montgomeryshire, 1697-1753. The deeds concern mainly messuages and lands situated in the township of Peniarth in the parish of Meifod, namely Tyddyn Pen y Voel, Tyddyn y Goetre-las, Maes y Kestill, Tire Nonio, Erw Forchog, Gweirglodd Dduddge and Gwerglodd Tir Nonio, and part of Cae tan y Lloyne (detailed boundary clauses) near Pentrego, also in the parish of Meifod. They include include a deed of partition between Alice Parry of Main, Mary Ellis of Garneddwen, Llanwddyn, and Margaret, wife of Methusalem Jones of Pant, all daughters and co-heiresses of William Lloyd of Pen y Voile, 1696/7; deeds of exchange between Methusalem Jones of Hunderdell (Underdale), Salop, and Robert Parry of Penyvoile, 1698, and between Alice Parry and her son Robert Parry, and Margaret Phillips of Shrewsbury and her son Robert Phillips, 1706/7; a settlement between Alice Parry and her son Robert, 1717; an appointment by Alice Parry to her grandson John Williams of £40, 1721; and a conveyance by Methusalem Jones to Robert Parry and his son Andrew Parry, to uses specified, 1723. The file also contains deeds of sale by John Bishop of Newtown to Robert Parry, of a messuage and a bakehouse converted into a dwelling in the township of Peniarth, 1741; a mortgage of the same to Elizabeth Thomas of Llannerchrochwel1, Guilsfield, 1741; and the copy probate of the will of Elizabeth Thomas, made 1743, proved 1750.

‘Mathrafal’

Title deeds relating to the estate of Mathrafal in the parish of Llangynyw, Montgomeryshire, 1785-1814. The file includes an agreement between William Mostyn Owen of Woodhouse, Salop, and Thomas Owen[s] of Gaer, Meifod, for the sale of Mathrafal, 1785; a copy release by William Mostyn Owen to John Humffreys Jones of Mathrafal and several other mortgaged premises mainly in the parish of Llanfechain, 1787; deeds for two purchases by Elizabeth Owens of Gaer, firstly from George Edward Henry Arthur Earl of Powis, of pieces of land in the tenancy of William Owen, 1786, and secondly from William Mostyn Owen, with the agreement and at the request of Thomas Owens, with John Humffreys Jones of Llanfyllin acting as trustee for the purchase, 1787; attested copy of the will of Elizabeth Owen, then of Meifod, devising Mathrafal to her grandson Thomas Owen Jones 1806; a printed ‘Act for inclosing lands in the manor of Caereinion Iscoed in the county of Montgomery’ [1810]; a release by John Whitticase of Guilsfield to Thomas Owen Jones of an annuity charged on Mathrafal, 1813; and a mortgage and bond by Thomas Owen Jones to Bruce, Simpson and Mackenzie, bankers of London, 1813, endorsed with an undertaking by the bankers to execute a reconveyance of the premises to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, the purchaser, upon repayment of the mortgage, 1814.

‘Meifod leaseholds and conveyance to A.W. Wynn’

Bundle in original wrapper labelled ‘Meifod leaseholds and conveyance to A.W. Wynn’ containing a conveyance by the trustees of the late Evan Ellis of Meifod to Thomas Owens of Frondeg of the Triangle Field near Meifod for the residue of a term of years created by the will of John Humphreys, 1836; successive assignments of the leasehold by Thomas Jones and David Davies to Rev. Levi Rees Jacob, vicar of Llanllugan, 1869, to William Evans, 1869, and to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn of Coedymaen, 1871, with a schedule of deeds, 1881; and a conveyance by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn of his estate for life to his son Arthur Watkin Williams Wynn in a messuage and lands called Penygraig or Tynygraig in the township of Peniarth and parish of Meifod, 1891.

‘Montgomeryshire Boroughs Election 1877 Papers’

Papers relating to the election of a member to serve in Parliament for the Borough of Montgomery, 1877, in which the candidates were Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest Viscount Castlereagh and Frederick Stephen Archibald Hanbury-Tracy. The file contains a printed register of persons entitled to vote, listing the boroughs and polling districts of Llanfyllin, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, Montgomery, Newtown and Welshpool, 1877, accompanied by vouchers and bills for election expenses, and letters mainly requesting and acknowledging payments, enclosed in an issue of the Mid-Wales Telegraph & Observer, and Cambrian General Advertiser, 21 July 1877, labelled ‘Election Expenses’

‘Old deeds belonging to Mathrafal lands’

Title deeds mainly relating to properties in the township of Mathrafal [parish of Llangynyw], Montgomeryshire, 1582-1697. Most of the deeds concern properties purchased by Evan Meredith, which descended to his son David Evans. They include the marriage settlements of David Deckyn and Jane vch Thomas ap Ieuan 1582, and of John Deacon the younger and Alice vch Robert Taylor, 1624; a deed of sale by John Deacon and family to Evan Meredith of messuages in Mathrafal and Cynhinfa, including a walk mill, 1640; a mortgage by David Evans to Thomas Richards of a ‘Meas-place’ or ancient tenement called Tomkis Tenement and lands (named) in the township of Mathrafal, 1690, which had been conveyed [c. 1650] by Thomas Benion and Sara his wife to Evan Meredith, dec.; a mortgage by Thomas Richards to John Edwards of ?Roxington, Salop, as security for the payment of arrears of rent on a capital messuage in Llannerchrochwel, 1695; an assignment of the mortgage of Tomkis Tenement and its lands by Thomas Richards, then of Moedog, to John Harris of Stretton, Salop, 1697; and a mortgage by John Harris (who had purchased the property from the heir of David Evans) as security for the payment of £150 due to Thomas Richards, 1697. Other evidence of the debts of David Evans comprise an assignment in 1677 of premises in Hirnant and Trefedryd which he had previously mortgaged to David Charles; and assignments of two judgements obtained against him, 1691 and 1694. The file also contains a conveyance by Henry Smith of Yockleton, Salop, to William Harries of Alberbury, of Whittiniacks Coppys and the Banckcroft, Yockleton, 1610.

‘Peniarth’

Title deeds relating to Peniarth Farm in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1800-1812. They comprise a mortgage by Rev. Thomas John Davies of Trewylan to Thomas Evans of Farchwel, 1800; an abstract of title of Rev. Thomas John Davies, 1732-1800 [compiled c. 1800]; a report by Humphrey Jones of Meifod to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn on the condition of the property and a valuation of the timber, 1810; an agreement for the purchase, 1812; an assignment by Mary Evans, widow and administratrix of Thomas Evans, to William Parry Richards, of the term comprised in the mortgage, in trust for Charles Watkin Williams Wynn 1812; and the conveyance by Rev. Thomas John Davies to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn and his trustee, 1812.

‘Peniarth, etc.’

Title deeds relating to properties in the township of Peniarth in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, and in Mathrafal, parish of Llangynyw, 1694-1815. The earliest is an assignment by David Jones of Bringlas and Ales his wife (nee Vaughan) to John Harris of Yockleton, Salop, of a judgement obtained in 1673 against David Evans of Mathrafal, 1694. The majority of the deeds relate to John David ap Humphrey’s house in Peniarth and they include: a deed declaring uses of a fine, 1708; a mortgage by John David ap Humphrey and Katherine his wife to Richard Derwas vicar of Meifod, 1721; the post-nuptial settlement of John David ap Humphrey of Peniarth and Katherine his wife, 1721; assignments of the mortgage from the Derwas family, with consent of Humphrey Williams and Sarah his wife, niece and heir of John David ap Humphrey, and their sons, David, William and Humphrey, to Sinah Price of Garth, 1754, then to William Williams of Coedtalog and Humphrey Morris of Peniarth, incorporating a settlement of the Williams family estate, 1759, then to William Moreton of Main, 1765, 1769, and to Evan Davies of Llanfihangel, 1772; the will of David Evans of Gwenynog in the parish of Llanfair Caereinion, 1763, proved 1767; a deed by Anne Williams and her son David to lead uses of a recovery, 1778; an agreement and deeds by David Williams and his mortgagee to Thomas Owen of Mathrafal for purchase of the property, 1796-1797; an abstract of title of Thomas Owen Jones (Watermark 1810); articles of agreement, correspondence and a conveyance by Thomas Owen Jones of Bishopsgate Street and his bankers to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn of the farm called Mathrafal or New Bridges, Llangynyw, and Gelly in the township of Peniarth and assignments of the terms of years to new trustees, 1813-1814. Other items comprise an Act for enclosing lands in the manor of Llanfyllin and Mechain Uwchcoed (printed), with commissioners’ receipts for lots purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn and Thomas Owen on the commons of Allt-yr-Anchor, Rhos y Glascoed and Rhosfawr, 1813-1815; a lease by John Beck of Shrewsbury to vest possession of Rhosfawr in Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, 1803; and a conveyance by Earl Temple to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and Charles Watkin Williams Wynn of a cottage in Bakers Lane, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, 1804.

‘Peniarth, Maine, etc.’

Title deeds mainly for Pentrego, formerly the estate of Thomas Brookes and Margaret his wife, and Maes y Wern in the townships of Main and Dyffryn in parish of Meifod, 1730-1795. They include deeds relating to a recovery of the estate of Thomas Phillips, 1730; a mortgage by Robert Phillips to Mary Harwood of Shrewsbury, 1731; a succession of assignments of mortgage by the mortgagees of Robert Phillips, 1734, John Lloyd of Pentrego, widowed husband of Elizabeth, niece of Robert Phillips, 1748-1750, William Humphreys of Llwyn, husband of Anne, daughter of John Lloyd, who had purchased the premises, 1759, and an assignment from the last mortgagee, Rev. Richard Maurice, back to William Humphreys, 1765; a conveyance prior to the marriage of William Humphreys and Ann Lloyd, in trust for the payment of annuities to John Lloyd and his brother Meyrick Lloyd, 1757; a mortgage by William Humphreys, of Pentrego, Calcots Field in Trefedyryd, Maes y Wern, Penybryn, Erw Glomen, Alt Vawr in Peniarth and Teitref, and several other properties, 1768, followed by successive assignments, a further mortgage, and releases by Ann, Hawley, Mary Esdaile, Frances Humphreys and Lucy Humphreys, daughters of William Humphreys the elder, of legacies received under their father’s will, 1787-1795; deeds by John Humphreys and the mortgagees and trustees, for the sale of Pentrego and Maes y Wern to Thomas Morris 1795, which the latter mortgaged to Edward Edwards, Archdeacon of Brecon, 1795; and copies of the wills of Robert Phillips of Shrewsbury, 1735, William Humphreys, 1772, his son William Humphreys, 1781, Jenkin Parry of Main, 1787, and Powel Parry of Overton, Flintshire, 1791.

‘Pentrego, etc.’

Title deeds for Pentrego in Dyffryn Meifod and Main, Montgomeryshire, 1665-1692. They include the following marriage settlements: Ambrose Phillips and Margaret his wife, daughter of Thomas Brookes of Dyffryn, 1665; Robert Parry of Main and Alice his wife, daughter of William Lloyd of Main, settling property in Main, Dyffryn and Dolgronn, 1667; and Robert Phillips of Shrewsbury and Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Richard Scott, naming Pentre yr Goe, the Bull in the township of Peniarth and other messuages in Dyffryn, Meifod, Main and Peniarth, preceded by a deed to lead uses of a fine involving Margaret Davies, wife of Richard Davies of Altfawr, to whom Robert Phillips was nephew, 1691, and followed by the final concord, 1692. The file also contains an assignment by Thomas Brookes, Margaret his wife and trustees to Ambrose Phillips of an annuity, 1667/8; and the will of Ambrose Phillips of Shrewsbury, 1677.

‘Pentrego, Maes-y-wern, Pen-y-coed, Maine, Ceunant, etc.’

Title deeds for two groups of properties in the townships of Dyffryn, Main and Peniarth in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn from Samuel Leach of Llanforda Issa in 1806. The first group comprises Pentrego, Maes y Wern, a messuage with a blacksmith’s shop, Pen-y-coed, Kynant (Ceunant), three parcels of land previously belonging to Main Farm, Pen-y-foel, Coed-tre-las, Ty yn y Celyn and Pen-y-craig, and includes deeds by Richard Rocke to William Humffreys of Llwyn for the purchase of Pen-y-coed, 1784, and by John Humffreys and his mortgagee to Thomas Morris of Main and his trustees, 1790; deeds relating to a recovery of the estate of Powel Parry of Main, 1789; a mortgage by Thomas Morris, cousin and devisee in the will of Powel Parry, of properties belonging to the latter’s estate, 1798; a conveyance by Thomas Morris to trustees in consideration of the marriage of his daughter Mary to Samuel Leach of Llanforda Issa, with copies, 1800. The second group of properties comprises parts of Dyffryn Farm called the piece below the village, Singrige, three furlongs in the town field, Croes Duon, Ystum-yr-Wydd, Cae Delin, Cae David Hugh and Gro Ucha. There are deeds recording their respective purchases by Samuel Leach and Thomas Morris from John Williams of Glanhafren and Catharine his wife, 1800, from Robert Clifton of Clifton Hall, Nottinghamshire, 1802, and from Walter Jones of Clomendu, Corwen, and Arthur Davies of the Hays, Oswestry, 1802; and a mortgage of some of the recently puchased premises, 1802. Finally, the file contains the conveyances by Samuel Leach and his mortgagee, and by Samuel Leach, his wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Morris, their remaining trustee Richard Croxon, and mortgagees who included John Edwards and Hugh Edwards, executors of Edward Edwards, Archdeacon of Brecon, of the two respective groups of properties to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn and his trustee, 1806

‘Tyddin y Cae Ddu’

Title deeds for Tyddin y Cae Ddu in the township of Peniarth in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, also mentioning Y Fedw Felen in Peniarth and Ffron Hauldu in the township of Main, 1716-1826. The file includes a mortgage by Richard Davies of Peniarth to William Jones of Cwm, 1716, and an assignment of the mortgage to Humphrey Evans of Halfen, 1738; a succession of assignments of mortgage, further mortgages and associated documents by Richard Davies, heir of Richard Davies dec., and his son Thomas Davies, shoemaker, 1755-1792, in which the mortgagees were Evan Pryce of Bryngwyn, 1755, William Moreton of Main, 1767, David Williams of Llandrinio and Edward Davies of Breden Heath in Welsh Hampton, Salop, 1772, Edward Tannatt of Mathrafal, 1778, Margaret Parry of Shrewsbury, 1790, Thomas Davies of Llanfihangel, 1792, John Habberley of Walton, Salop, and Henry Foulkes, 1792-1794; a conveyance by Thomas Davies, shoemaker, then a prisoner for debt at Montgomery Gaol, and Henry Foulkes of [Welsh]pool to Thomas Davies of Llanfihangel and others, 1794; an assignment of mortgage by John Habberley and Thomas Davies to William Vaughan of Trelystan, reciting that Fedw Felen had been sold to discharge part of the debt, 1801; a conveyance of Tyddyn y Cae Du by William Vaughan, Thomas Davies of Shoreditch, eldest son and heir of Thomas Davies, and John Davies of Llanfihangel to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, 1810, and on the dorse a release by Edward Vaughan, brother of William Vaughan (who died a lunatic) of his interest in the property, 1826; and a conveyance by Thomas and John Davies to Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, to corroborate the former deed for Tyddyn y Cae Du (1810) and for the sale of another piece of land (4a.) in Peniarth, 1821.
