A manuscript in the hand of David Richards ('Dewi Silin') containing transcripts of John Davies: A Display of Herauldry (Salop, 1716); 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by Hugh Morys; 'Edeyrn Dafawd aur' (see Cwrtmawr MS 233); 'cywyddau' by Ieuan ab Hywel Swrdwal and Gruffudd ab Ieuan ab Llywelyn, and 'Chwedl Rhitta Gawr' from a transcript by Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') of a manuscript of James Davies ('Iaco ap Dewi'); a 'Letter from Mr Owen [William Owen-Pughe], Author of the Welsh and English Dictionary, containing Remarks on the Structure of the Welsh Language, and on the Characteristic of the Gwentian Dialect ...', printed in William Coxe: An Historical Tour in Monmouthshire, part II (London, 1801), pp. 405-7; and 'cywyddau', an 'awdl' and 'englynion' by Hugh Morys, Jno. Davies ('o'r Rhiwlas'), William Miltwn, Doctor Sion Kent, Simwnt Fychan, Richart Phylip, Sion Philip and Sion Cain, and incomplete poems. Pasted on the inside lower cover is an imperfect printed prospectus of Seren Gomer, 1813.

Accounts, poetry, etc.

A volume (212 pp., several of which are blank) originally intended for use as a ledger, written in several hands and containing accounts, 1766-8 (webs, rye, butter, barley, etc. [?Dolgellau district, with references to Penllyn and Trawsfynydd]); a few medical recipes; stanzas of verse beginning 'Gwrando' nghariad ar fy nghwynion ...' (incomplete); the first twelve stanzas of a poem written by John Williams, St Athan, after the expulsion of Peter Williams, 1791 (cf. the printed version, 1793, of 'Can diddarfod'); a weaver's patterns; a copy of part of a herbal, Aneth - Pren Bocs (cf. Llysieulyfr Meddyginiaethol a briodolir i William Salesbury, ed. E. Stanton Roberts (Liverpool: Hugh Evans & Sons. 1916), p. 249; accounts, 1829-30, headed 'Account of the Factory's work from the 12 of Novr. 1829'; part of a treatise in Welsh on physiognomy (?possibly a translation as it contains quotations in English verse); and verses by Cadwalader Thomas and 'englynion' by Evan Elis 'I Factory Cefnddwysarn a adeiladwyd yn un cyntaf yn mhenllyn'. At the reverse end are notes in Welsh on the theory of music and a draft (in pencil) of the will of John Cadwalader of Tyllwyd in the parish of Llan D...., Merioneth, 1823, etc. Among loose papers are two bills (one mutilated), 1830, to Ebenezer Williams, Cefnddwysarn for spinning, etc.

Inset at the end of the volume are transcripts of Montgomeryshire pedigrees, etc. Much of the material in the volume has been transcribed from other volumes now in the Cwrtmawr Collection (e.g. MSS 200, 222, 242 and 243) and there are references to such sources as 'un o lyfrau Maesglas Mallwyd' (transcribed in 1857) (p. 269), a manuscript in the hand of Robert Arthur (p. 342), 'Llyfr ym meddiant Lowri Jones' (p. 380), etc. A note pasted on the inside of the upper cover states 'This Vol. was copied by Owen Jones (brother of Myrddin Fardd) from a MS Vol. ... in the handwriting of Lewis Morris [Cwrtmawr MS 200] now at Bryntanad, Llanerfyl Montgomerys[hire] (Richards) E. Breese'. Owen Jones was for a short time a private tutor at BrynTanad (see The Dictionary of Welsh Biography). The spine is lettered 'Mannoethwy MSS'.

Amryw o lyfrgell Owen Jones,

Miscellaneous notebooks and unbound papers from the library of, and largely in the hand of, Owen Jones (1833-99), Calvinistic Methodist minister, man of letters, book collector and bibliographer, of Liverpool and Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, Montgomeryshire. They include a fragment of a late eighteenth century manuscript containing 'Carol Plygain' by John Cadwaladr, verses by Ellis William, Llwunc[y]nfal, etc. ('Howel Jones his Book ... 1792,' 'Howel Jones Llwyncunfal ... ber 1792'); a volume of poetry including three libretti entitled 'Samson (Cyfieithiad o waith [John] Mil[ton]', 'Deborah' ('Finis May 4th 1861') and 'Y Cread' ('11/3/62'), and Welsh and English originals and translations, 1860-3 (e.g. 'The Hymns of A[nn] G[riffiths] rendered into English', 'Gray's Elegy'); a draft list of 'Hen Ddiarhebion' [old Welsh proverbs] rendered into Welsh verse (nos 1-540; one section dated 3 March [18]63); copious draft bibliographies of prose and poetry works by individual Welsh authors; etc. The material was originally tied in a brown paper wrapper inscribed by J[ohn] B[allinger], 'Library of the late Rev. Owen Jones, notes lent to Mr J. H. Davies by Miss Janet Jones, & by him deposited in the N[ational] L[ibrary of Wales]. 15-12-[19]09'.

Anterliwt Oluphernes, etc.

A manuscript in several hands containing an incomplete text of an interlude, 'Hannes Oliffernes a Jiwdath' by Elis Roberts ('Elis y Cowper'), 1766 (see MSS 103, 123); free-metre poetry by Elisabeth Dauiuis [sic], Thomas Edwards ('or Nant'), Elis Roberts, John Richard, and Robert Richard (1768); and anonymous 'englynion' and free-metre compositions; and farming memoranda.

Astrology, etc.

A volume (98 pp.) containing astrological material, etc., including the following: 'Dechreu am y Llysie', 'Am Groun Neidar', horoscopes beginning 'Tesni'r Mâb a aner or 12 dydd o fowrth ir 12 dydd o Ebrill', 'Am ba achosion y Dechreued henwi'r arwyddion ...', 'Llyfr o waith Ellis Totlis I Alexander fawr I adnabod Corph Pob Dyn pan I gwelir ef ...', 'Am chwech Grâdd y sydd ir Haul yn y ffurfafen ag ir lleuad iw gerdded bob Mis yn y flwyddyn ...', 'y saith gelefyddyd [sic] wladaidd', 'Cerdd I siri sir feirionydd am y flwyddyn 1743' beginning 'Y meistar Morrus Jones or Ddôl' by an unnamed poet, with two 'englynion' 'I Aer Mr Jones or Ddôl, '(?) both by Thomas Edwd., followed by two verses headed 'Iechyd y siri', horoscopes in English, verses by Edward Morris 'or perthi llwidion', beginning 'Os wit yn fy ngofyn ath wllus ar ddallt ..., a verse in English and Welsh ('Iw gosod ar y Cloc y mae'r Rhain'), 'Llyma ddrych y llaw ne balmystyr o waith y 7 wyr Doethion', a copy of an inscription on a gravestone in Conway church and of 'englynion' by Robert Wynne, vicar of Gwyddelwern, on the gravestone of Huw Morys (d. 31 August 1709) at Llansilin, 'Rhod yn Dangos pwy a ddowed wir a phwy a ddowed gelwydd', and 'Dychymyg yw ddyfalu I Janne Lloyd' (A wnewch chwi A : Ddyfalu ...'), etc. The volume appears to have been written by Evan Thomas [?Cwmhwylfod, Sarnau, nr Bala], c. 1760-3 or possibly earlier.

Barddoniaeth Dafydd ap Gwilym, etc.

A volume of transcripts of poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym, together with a few 'englynion' and 'cywyddau' by Wm Morris, G[ruffudd] Grug, Dafydd ap Edmund, Rhys Gôch Glan Ceiriog, Dafydd Nanmor, Iolo Goch, R[obin] Ddu, and some anonymous 'englynion'. The transcripts are taken from UCNW Bangor MS 6. A note by Mary Richards, Darowen on p. 1 ascribes the volume to John William[s], musician ('Cyfansoddwr Tona'), Dolgelley, probably John Williams ('Ioan Rhagfyr') (see Thomas Parry (gol.): Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym (Caerdydd, 1952) pp. c1xviii-clxix). At the end of the volume is a table entitled 'Rhannau Monwent Dar-Owen megis y dosparthwyd ag y cyweiriwyd hwynt ar eiriol David Davies vicar yno, gan ddechrau, o barth dwyrain Ty'r Vicar ag felly diwygio oddi amgylch Mai yr 28 1636' (' ... carefully transcribed out of the original by me Lewis Jones Vicar of Darowen' - a Chopiwyd genyf inneu or Terrier Darowen. M. R. Dar[owen]'). Tipped into the volume are a bond, 14 February 1690/1, from David Jones of Cowarch, Merionethshire, gent. to John Thomas Rees of the same, yeoman for the observance of covenants, and a poem in free metre entitled 'Myfyrdod y Parchedig Mr [Roderick] Lewis Periglor Llanbrynmair Uwchben Bedd ei ddiweddar Wraig', 1829. Among a number of items laid on the inside lower cover is Ychydig o gynghorion buddiol i Bobl Ieuainc, Wrth fyned i wasanaeth (Treffynnon, n.d.).

Barddoniaeth Huw Morys

An imperfect manuscript of the late seventeenth century in the hand of Huw Morys, with copious additions in a number of early eighteenth century hands. It consists largely of 'cywyddau', 'carolau', 'cerddi' and 'dyrïau' by Huw Morys himself, with a few poems in both strict and free metres by Owen Gwynedd, Humphrey Owen, Simwnt Vychan, William Miltwn [Midleton, Myddelton], Doctor Sion Kent, Roger Kyffin, Sion Sgrufen and John Davies ('of Rhiwlas'), and anonymous poems. The volume is lettered 'Barddoniaeth Huw Morys'.

Barddoniaeth Huw Morys a Roger Jones, etc.

A collection of 'cerddi', 'carolau', 'penillion', etc. in free metres by Hugh Moris and Rogiar Jones and numerous anonymous poems and scraps of verse. Also included are a rental of chief rents of Cynlleth yr Iarll and a rental of the tithe of Llangadwalader, Denbighshire, both undated, and a medical recipe. A note by Dafydd Marpole in Cwrtmawr MS 225, p. 86 attributes the present manuscript to the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Among later additions to the volume are holograph 'englynion' by Joseph Marpole ('yn llegys'), 1779. The spine is lettered 'Gwaith H. Morys a Roger Jones'.

A badly mutilated manuscript of the early eighteenth century containing 'carolau', etc., and a 'cywydd' by Huw Morris.

A collection of 'cerddi', 'carolau', etc. by Hugh Morris, together with a 'cerdd' by Huw Jones, Llangwm, a 'cerdd' by the Reverend Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], anonymous 'englynion, 'carolau' and some financial accounts, 1805 and undated. The volume is in the hand of Huw Jones, Llangwm, with a few later additions by Elizabeth Maurice and by Mary Richards, Darowen. It belonged to Thomas Powel, 1804, and Martha Powel, 1805, and also bears the names of Henry Powel, 1756, John Jones, carpenter, Pentregayr [Oswestry] and Martha Edwards.

A mid-eighteenth century collection of 'cerddi', 'ymddiddanion', etc. by H[uw] M[orys], together with a few poems by Thomas Edwards ['Twm o'r Nant'], Dav[id] Shadrach, David Thomas ('o sir Garen[ar]fon') Thos. Jones (Maes y Cernddi 'in Cowny' [sic]), and anonymous poems, farm accounts and memoranda, 1773-6, and a veterinary recipe. The volume is written in three main hands, of which the third is that of Dav[id] Shadrach.

John Myddelton Esq. [of Chirk Castle]', together with a copy of a covering letter to John Myddelton from Richd. Foulkes; ... L[l]ythur y mae yr gair amdano mai Du[w] ... ai ysgrifenodd ai law i hun y rhwn a gaed ta[n] gareg mewn Tref ai henw Mae Kwmbe ...'; and entries of birth and baptism, 1712-32/3 [at Llansilin] of the children of Richard Foulks [of Rhiwlas] and Jane Griffith, his wife. Bound in at the end of the volume is an original power of attorney, 1674, of Oliver Thomas of Shewsbury [sic], Salop, yeoman, authorising his brother Thomas Rees of Llanymowthwey, Montgomeryshire, yeoman, to sue or to compound persons subscribed for specified debts (backed for the purpose of repairing by a printed prospectus of Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'): [Diliau Barddas, Dinbych, 1827]). The manuscript is written in several hands, among them that of Richard Foulks.

Five uniformly bound notebooks numbered 1-5 containing a collection made by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of the poetical works of Owen Gruffydd, Llanystumdwy (d. 1730), transcribed from Peniarth MS 124 (see 502 and 505), NLW MS 799 and other sources (?NLW MSS 18 and 11816, etc.), together with some printed items and (in 503) a few 'englynion' by William Elias. The lists of contents at the beginning of 503 appear to relate to Cwrtmawr MS 467 and NLW MS 799 respectively.

A composite volume almost entirely in the hand of the Reverend Robert Williams (1810-81), Rhydycroesau, near Oswestry. It contains a list of contents and a complete transcript of Peniarth MS 152 ('cywyddau' and 'awdlau' by Gutto'r Glynn, etc.), completed at Rhydycroesau, 21 December 1870; a transcript from Brogyntyn MS 2, with an English translation, of a 'cywydd' by Tudur Penllyn transcribed 2 February 1871; two copies of a 'cywydd' by Sion Kain transcribed from Peniarth MS [116], 14 November 1876, with relevant marginal pedigrees, poetry in strict and free metres by Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'] from 'Cydymeth Ifiengtid; sef Cerddi Cowyddau, ag Englynion tra dewisol na buant yn Argraffedig yr rioed hyd eitha fy ngwibodheth, sef Gwaith amriw rai o brydyddion cymru wedi gasglu gan Dafydd Evans, Llanfihangel, 1785'; 'Cywyddau Cywilyddus o [ffug-]waith Gweyrful Mechain', a 'cywydd' by Tydur Penllyn and 'englynion' by Iorwerth Vynglwyd, from 'Llyfr Hir Llywarch Reynolds' (NLW MS 970) and Llanstephan MS 35; and an incomplete list of contents of Cwrtmawr MS 242. A part of the volume may be in the hand of John Jones, 1747. Bound into the volume is a notice, 20 June 1828, from the church-wardens and overseers of the poor of the parish of Llanfihangel, Montgomeryshire to the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the parish of Llangyniew of a proposed appeal against a removal order by the Court of Quarter Sessions. Mounted on the blank dorse of one leaf is a printed prospectus of Y Gwyliedydd [1822].

The Bodilan manuscript appears to have been written by Robert Thomas, 1730, and the poets, instances of whose work have been transcribed from this source, include Iolo Goch, Dafydd ab Gwilym, Madoc ap grono gethin, Mredydd Brydydd, Dafydd Nanmor, John Cent, D[r] G[ruffudd] R[oberts], Hugh Arwystl, Howel ab Surr Mathew, William ab Sion Wyn, D. M,, Efan ab Ridsiard, Robert John Evan, E. Thomas, Edward Davies, [Siôn Tudur], John Philips, Dr. [?Sr] Gr. fain, Lewis Lloyd, E. ?M., Moris ab Robert or Bala, Lewis Sion, William Humphrey and Thomas Lloyd ienga o Benma(e)n. The prose items include 'Achau'r Cwrw ai fonedd ai Hanes ai Gyneddfau ai wrthiau' from an unnamed source.
