A composite volume mainly in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing the names of some Caernarvonshire sheriffs arranged under houses in Llŷn and Eifionydd ('Y Tylwythau o ba rai y penodwyd Siryddion Sir Gaernarfon o Leyn ac Eifionydd'), pedigrees of various Llŷn families (Rhiw, Cefnamwlch, Saethon, Trygarn, Cefnllanfair and Madryn), notes on heraldry ('Arfau Bonedd'), more pedigrees (Nanhoron, Saethon, with a leaf from an older manuscript concerning Saython [sic]), short extracts from Caernarvonshire pedigrees concerning clergymen, etc., 'Traethawd byr, y'nghyd âg adfyfyriadau, ar Ach Iesu Grist .... wedi ei gyfieithu o Ffrangaeg Abb Giraudeau, a chwanegu atto, gan y Parchedig Dr. A. Clarke; a'i droi i'r Gymraeg gan T. Loose in the volume are a letter, ?1903, from the Reverend Evan Evans, Llansadwrn Rectory, Anglesey to 'Myrddin [Fardd'] (the name of a subscriber for the addressee's book, genealogical queries), and holograph verses by [Ebenezer Thomas] 'Eben Fardd' beginning 'Fenywod hawddgar! dowch o'n plaid'. The first section of the manuscript is marked 'Copy No 30'.

On one of the fly-leaves is an imperfect list of correspondents in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with additions in the hand of J. H. Davies.

An adjudication (incomplete), prefaced by some general suggestions by and in the autograph of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), for the Dinorwig Literary Society festival, 16 June 1855 ('Awgrymiadau ar Feirniadaeth Gymreig ynghyd â Beirniadaeth neillduol ar y Cyfansoddiadau ar yr Egwyddor Wirfoddol, a rhai Testynau eraill, o eiddo Cymdeithas Lenyddol Dinorwig, erbyn eu Gwyl Lenyddol, Mehefin 16eg. 1855'), subsequently printed in Y Traethodydd, 1908, pp. 401-407, where John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') is acknowledged as the source.

Bywgraffiad Peter Williams, etc.

(I) A home-made notebook of Morris Davies of Bangor (1796-1876), author, hymnologist and musician, containing material towards a biography of the Reverend Peter Williams (1723-96) and draft resolutions of a committee of Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Church, Bangor, 1851-2 (with a reference to the proposed erection of 'Capel Upper Bangor' i.e. Twr-gwyn Chapel). The volume is made up of a variety of printed and manuscript sheets, including an undated printed appeal for subscriptions towards the presentation of his own portrait to Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), an undated printed prospectus of E. Williams, milliner and dress maker, High Street, Bangor; a notice of a meeting of the Provisional Directors of the Rhiw Bach Slate Quarries Company, 1853; a letter from the Reverend John Hughes, Liverpool to M[orris] Davies, 1848 (enclosing books, the possible re-publication of a book of hymns); a printed prospectus of Samuel Roberts, Bangor Agency, China Tea Company, 1852; a letter from Ebenezer M. Roberts, Pwllheli to [Morris Davies], 1853 (the debt still remaining on Penymount Chapel) (with a draft reply); a printed prospectus of [J.] Russell's Menai Bathing Machines, Gored-y-Gyd, Bangor, 1853; and letters from Morris Davies to [ ], undated (an appointment), Croxon, Jones, C[o.], [bankers], Oswestry to John Jones, currier, Llanfyllin, 1838 (a payment), and Thomas Gee, Denbigh to [Morris Davies], 1850 (an allocation to the recipient from the proceeds of Y Traethodydd for 1849). (Ii) A small notebook containing a copy of a letter written in response to a letter published in Y Gwyliedydd, XI (1834), pp. 296-8, relating to the Reverend Peter Williams.

Cyfansoddion Barddonol ...,

A composite volume containing poetical compositions in strict and free metre by, and in the autograph of, Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'). The wording on the title-page of the first part of the volume is 'Cyfansoddion Barddonol gan Ebenezer Thomas, Clynnog. 1843' but some of the items in the section are later than this date. The remainder of the manuscript appears to consist of two other sections, the one containing miscellaneous poems, some dated, c. 1833-60, the other containing 'Y Cleopiad', 1847, and a number of 'englynion'. Alterations and interlineations have been made in some of the poems. Besides the Welsh poems - many of which, though not all, are included in Gweithiau Barddonol, &c. Eben Fardd [?1873] - the volume contains a few items of English verse. There are also one or two printed items, including a sheet of harvest hymns entitled 'Hymnau Cynauaf' by Ebenezer Thomas, 1843 (Caernarfon: Argraffwyd gan James Rees).

Darlith ar y Testament Newydd,

'Darlith ar y Profion Hanesiol o Awduriaeth a Throsglwyddiaeth Llyfrau y Testament Newydd ... ', being a holograph draft translation by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), 1854, of S. P. Tregelles: A Lecture on the historic evidence of the authorship and transmission of the books of the New Testament (London, 1852).

Diaries of 'Eben Fardd',

A composite volume comprising Y Dyddiadur Methodistaidd, 1845, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1851, 1852, and additional leaves, with diary entries and memoranda by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd').

Diary of Eben Fardd,

A notebook containing diary entries by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), 7 January 1843 - 25 December 1844. The greater part of the volume was published in Bye-gones, 1894, pp. 501-4, and 1896, pp. 249-53. The beginning of the volume has since been seriously damaged by burning.

Eben Fardd: Memoranda and accounts,

A composite volume, lettered 'Eben Fardd's MS', comprising day and 'memoranda' books of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'). Among the material recorded by the writer are extracts relating to Tractarianism; diary entries, 1837-9, 1849; shop, school, bookbinding and other accounts, 1839-40; mensuration problems and tables, etc., c. 1834; 'Memorandum of Literary adventures and Transactions ... 1848-55, being largely a list of adjudications at eisteddfodau and literary meetings, and 'adjudicatory transactions conducted on the New Plan', 1855-6, and 'Requisitions & invitations declined', 1855-7; Llanarmon School, Clynnog School, and sundry accounts, 1827; etc.

Eben Fardd's Memorandum,

A composite volume lettered 'Eben Fardd's Memorandum', comprising Y Dyddiadur Methodistaidd, 1853, 1854, 1856, 1857, 1859, and two leaves from the diary for 1850 (13-26 January, 24 March-6 April), and additional leaves, with diary entries and copious school accounts and other memoranda by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd').

Enwogion Llŷn ac Eifionydd,

A manuscript by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing an introductory chapter ('Rhagymadrodd Enwogion') on the worthies of Llŷn and Eifionydd (subsequently amended in turn to Eifionydd and to Caernarvonshire), together with additional notes and press cuttings on the subject. One of the labels on the outer upper cover is numbered '13' and another is inscribed 'Eben Fardd .... ac Enwogion amryw'.

A composite volume of holograph poetry by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'). The titles include 'Awdl ar Gystuddiau, Amynedd ac Adferiad Job. Testyn Cadeiriol Eisteddfod y Gordofigion yn Llynlleifiad 1840', together with two pages of revisions ('Diwygiadau yn yr Awdl ragflaenol'); a draft 'awdl' on 'Esgyniad Elias', 'Englyn ir Afr. Un o destynau Eisteddfod y Gordovigion 1840'; 'Englynion i Syr Joshua Walmsley Maer Llynlleifiad, ar yr achlysur o'i nawdd ai haelioni i Eisteddfod y Gordofigion 1840'; and 'Awdl ar Longddrylliad y "Rothsay Castle" 1832, ('Rhan gyntaf o Awdl ar y Testyn, sef hyd pan darawodd y Llong Ar "Draethell yr Isellmyn" yn Awst 17 1831')'.

Letters and poetry,

A folder containing eight files of original letters and copies of letters and poetry from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). There is also a transcript of a letter from the Reverend Thomas Ellis, Holyhead to the Reverend Humphrey Owen and the Reverend J. Hoare, 1742 (the original letter is preserved in NLW MS 478), and a copy of Evan Evans's elegy to Lewis Morris, with notes on the text. File 4: Transcripts of letters from Edward Richard, Ystrad Meurig, c. 1759-1766, to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd'). There are also copies of two short letters to Evan Evans from Roderick Lewis, Trefeglwys, and William Howell, Llanidloes, which were written on the same sheet as Edward Richard's letter of 1 March 1766. The original letters are preserved in NLW MS Panton 74. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). Holograph letters (13) and some poetry,1791-1819, of D[avid] Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr, Bettws St Garmon, etc. Some of the letters have been published in [John Jones] 'Myrddin Fardd', Adgof uwch Anghof (Penygroes, 1883). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. There is also some poetry in English by [John Blackwell ('Alun')] and in Welsh by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'). Letters of John Jones (Tegid)

A volume made up of fourteen letters, 1819-1851, from John Jones (Tegid or Ioan Tegid, 1792-1852), Oxford and later Nevern, to various correspondents. The details are as follows: six letters, 1819-1826, to the Rev. Thomas Richards, Berriew (the education of the addressee's brother and of E. Evans [probably 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'], a 'cywydd' on the death of Mrs Bosanquet, literary matters, adverse criticism from the bishop of Llandaff [William van Mildert] of a proof-sheet of the edition of the Welsh Prayer Book which the writer had undertaken to superintend); four letters, 1820-1824, to the Rev. David Richards, Llansilin (the education of the addressee's younger brother [Lewis], literary matters, the addressee's marriage, etc.); one letter, 1839, to Miss Angharad Lloyd [sic] (the Liber Landavensis is now in the press, he has completed his Welsh version of Isaiah direct from the Hebrew); one letter, 1846, to Owen Williams, Waenfawr (literary matters, criticism of the addressee's proposed 'Vocabulary'); one letter, 1851, to [Ebenezer Thomas] Eben Fardd (re. adjudicating the 'pryddestau' on 'Golygfa Moses &c'); and one letter, 1850, to the Rev. Richard Richards [Meifod] (he is glad to hear of the addressee's success, a proposed monument to Bishop William Morgan and the Rev. Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) at Llanrhaiadr yn Mochnant, plans for a commentary in Welsh on the Epistle to the Galatians etc.). Also included in the volume are extracts, 1845, from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh 'o'r Graienyn ger y Bala' ('Brawd Nain Ioan Tegid o du ei fam oedd Rowland Hugh'), transcripts of two letters, the originals of which are to be found in Peniarth MS 11, viz. a letter, 1847, from [John Jones] Tegid, Nevern to the Lady Charlotte E. Guest and a letter, 1860, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil to W. W. E. Wynne, Esq., and an outline of 'Tegid's Feet [shoes] drawn at the Vicarage Darowen at the request of ?M. D. Letters of Morris Williams ('Nicander'),

A volume containing about ninety letters, 1840-63, from the Reverend Morris Williams ('Nicander'), writing from Bangor, Amlwch and Llanrhyddlad, to Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), with a draft copy of one letter, 1850, from 'Eben Fardd' to 'Nicander'. A few of the letters have been printed in Adgof Uwch Ahghof. Also in the volume are a letter, 1865, from 'Nicander' to an unnamed correspondent and two letters, 1868, one incomplete, from 'Nicander' to [Richard Roberts] 'Bardd Treflys'. At the end of the volume are three letters, 1862, from Eunice Jones (Liverpool), daughter of Peter Jones ('Pedr Fardd'), writing from Clifton and Llanrhyddlad Rectory, to 'Eben Fardd' (enquiring about the connection between her father's family on his mother's side and the Wynnes of Glyn Llifon; 'englynion' by 'Pedr Fardd'). Pasted into the volume near the beginning is a cutting containing a letter, 1849, from M. Williams, ['Nicander'], Amlwch to John James ('Ioan Meirion'); there is also a loose cutting of a photograph of 'Nicander'.
