A group of ten notebooks in the hand of D. Silvan Evans, mainly either relating to his contributions to Encyclopaedia Cambrensis. Y Gwyddoniadur Cymreig (Denbigh, 1856-79) or comprising glossaries and texts on Welsh orthography. Among the titles are 'Gwyddoniadur. Letters to D. Silvan Evans, etc.,

Eight letters, 1858 [?1859]-74, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil, seven of which are addressed to D. Silvan Evans and one to W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (copy). Accompanying one of the letters to D. Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Fifteen letters to D. Silvan Evans, one, 1885, from (?) M. B. Wynn, Rothley, Loughborough (the term 'gafaelgi') and fourteen, 1871-9 and undated, from W[illia]m W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (Archaeologia Cambrensis, replying to queries and requesting assistance himself, Sir Watkin's uneasiness about [Gruffydd] Roberts's grammar and his wish to have it returned (from Paris), sympathy, an invitation to the addressee to Peniarth).

Lewis Morris's Additions to Dr Davies's Welsh-Latin Dictionary ...,

A volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans described on the title-page as 'Lewis Morris's Additions to Dr Davies's Welsh-Latin Dictionary (from autographs) 1879. (The original Copy, once belonging to Lewis Morris, and annotated on by him, is now (1879) in the possession of the Rev. Thomas James, LLD, ['Llallawg'], Vicar of Netherthong, near Huddersfield)'. The scribe has added the following observations: 'The additions, it will be seen, are few, and very unimportant ..', and at the end has recorded the following entry: 'Returned the Copy of Dr Davies's Dictionary lent me by Llallawg, for transcribing the preceding notes, July 30, 1879'.

Letters to D. Silvan Evans,

Thirty-two letters and one postcard, 1869-90, to D. Silvan Evans from Howel W[illiam] Lloyd (1816-93), Upper Chelsea and Kensington ('Y Marchog Crwydrad', mention of 'Llyfr Ceniarth', a manuscript containing poems by Huw Arwystli [sic], etc., bibliographical matters, his efforts to collect the poems of Guto'r Glyn, the addressee's dictionary).

Gweithiau Iolo Goch ...,

A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.
