Legal papers

The series includes petitions to court, writs, memoranda, bills of complaint, defendants' answers, cases with opinions of counsel, affidavits, interrogatories and depositions of witnesses, jury lists, copies and abstracts of deeds, and pedigrees to prove title. A large part of the records comprises disputes over title to land or inheritance, which took place in the High Court of Chancery or on the equity side in the Court of Great Sessions. The most substantial of them concern Cae'rberllan and Nant yr Helfa, 1672-1695, the Flintshire (Cwyber) estate, 1687-1749, 1787, Tyddyn Glan y Ffynnon, Gwaun Dwysog, etc., 1745-1754, the estate of John Griffith (2) of Garn, 1758, 1764, and the will of Charlotte Botfield of Norton Hall, 1829-1832.

Mortgages

The series comprises mortgages made by successive owners of Garn of various parts of the estate in Rhuddlan, Henllan, Llanefydd and St Asaph, namely Cwyber and the surrounding lands, 1680-1749, Garn, Roe and Cwyber, 1757-1760, Cwyber and Tre-Llewelin, 1759-1760, Coed Panton, 1759, 1761, Bryngwyn, 1794, Coed, 1799, and the Hafod estate, 1856-1862.

The series comprises a commonplace book, 1734, containing notes on Greek and Latin literature, ancient history, philosophy and science, other extracts and educational notes on similar subjects, 1820, 1841, 1925, and book lists, 1819-1830.

The series comprises letters by members of the Griffith family of Garn, 1724, 1783-1876, mainly John Wynne Griffith, his wife, Jane, their sons, Robert, George, Thomas, Edward Humphrey, William Henry, their daughter, Harriet, and immediate relatives, written to each other and occasionally to other close relatives and friends. The principal, recurring subjects have already been noted, but other matters of interest include botany, visits to Europe, army life in India, commerce and a local railway accident.
