This collection is divided into two sections: that of the Thomas Edwards ('Pencerdd Caer') collection (NLW MSS 8924-9014) and that of the John Owen ('Owain Alaw') and Hugh Jones ('Erfyl') collections (NLW MSS 9015-9037). Thomas Edwards' collection is largely in his own hand and is mainly comprised of material relating to Flintshire, Denbighshire and Chester, including essays and articles, pedigrees, transcripts of records, and abstracts of deeds and documents; also included are letters, a collection of postcards, music by Thomas Edwards, Edwards family records, accounts, and miscellanea. The John Owen ('Owain Alaw') collection comprises correspondence, music by 'Owain Alaw', poetry, an essay and biographical notes on 'Owain Alaw', papers of William John Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd'), and a copy of The Poetical Works of Richard Llwyd, The Bard of Snowdon ... (London, [1837]) and letters to Richard Llwyd. The Hugh Jones ('Erfyl') collection comprises correspondence, diaries, an incomplete autobiography, poetry by 'Erfyl', an essay, an elegy to 'Erfyl', and accounts and miscellanea.

The correspondents include Jane Davies, daughter of 'Gwallter Mechain', 1858; Morris Davies, Upper Bangor, 1859-60; Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'), 1853-4; John Ceiriog Hughes ('Ceiriog'), 1863-7; John Jones ('Talhaiarn'), 1865; Brinley Richards, 1864 and undated; E[benezer] Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), 1860; Lady Mary Emily William Wynn, Wynnstay, 1865; and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 6th bart., Wynnstay, [1865]. There are also two letters from [Sir] C[harles] B[eaumont] Phipps, Windsor Castle, for H.M. The Queen, to Charles Hughes, publisher, Wrexham, 1863.
Among the subjects discussed, apart from 'Owain Alaw's musical interests and the dedication of his publications, are 'Gwallter Mechain's letters (by Jane Davies) and the proposed biography of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl) (by Morris Davies). Also included among the letters is a printed song - 'The Welcome Home, sung by the children of the Rhos-y-Medre and Rhosllanerchrugog National Schools on the occasion of the birth of an heiress to the noble House of Wynnstay', 1865.

A small group of Flintshire and other North Wales pedigrees, largely from printed sources, including the families of Conwy of Bodrhyddan, Morgan of Gwylgrev (Golden Grove), Davies of Gop (in the hand of T. Allen Glenn, Meliden), Salisbury of Llewenni, Wynne of Ceunant, etc.

A part, relating only to John Owen ('Owain Alaw'), of an essay by G[riffith] Jones ('Glan Menai'), on 'Owain Alaw, Tanymarian, a Brinley Richards', together with additional biographical memoranda in the hand of Thomas Edwards, and a draft testimonial [from Charles Bowen, rector of St. Mary-on-the-Hill, Chester] in support of the application of 'Owain Alaw' for the post of assistant organist of Bangor Cathedral [1865].

An incomplete autobiography of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl'), together with a proof-sheet thereof, corrected by Thomas Edwards, and additional biographical information in another hand. This autobiography was translated into Welsh and incorporated in an anonymous biography of 'Erfyl' which appeared in Y Traethodydd, 1876, p. 281ff.

A volume in the hand of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl') containing transcripts of letters written by him from Llanfyllin to Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'), to the editor of Goleuad Gwynedd, etc., 1819; Welsh poetry, partly of Llanfyllin interest; and 'Cyfansoddiad difyfyr yn Eisteddfod Dinbych Hydr. 6ed. 1819. Among other poets represented are John Jones ('Talhaiarn'); John Blackwell ('Alun'); Roger Edwards, Mold; Robert Parry ('Robin Ddu Eryri'); Edward Roberts ('Iorwerth Glan Aled'), etc. There is also (a) a cutting, from Yr Herald Cymraeg, of a letter, 26 March 1859, from Evan James ('Ieuan ap Iago'), Pontypridd, enclosing a copy of his 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau', the first song to be sung to the tune 'Glan Rhondda', composed by his son James James, Harp Inn, Pontypridd; (b) a photograph of Owen Wynne Jones ('Glasynys'); and (c) a transcript of a 'Carol Nadolig', with comments by S[idney] A[urelius] J[ones], Ynys, St. Asaph. The items are mounted in a volume of Kearsley's Gentleman's and Tradesman's Pocket Ledger, 1844, containing some manuscript entries.

A hymn-tune - 'Christleton', and a 'Litany' by John Owen ('Owain Alaw'); an anthem - 'Dyn a aned o wraig' by [name erased]; a hymn-tune - 'Geirionydd' by E. Evans ['Ieuan Glan Geirionydd']; and incomplete transcripts of sixty chants, single and double, composed by John Jones, organist of St. Paul's Cathedral, 1785.
