Abstract of probate records &c.

Notebook with sections in alphabetical order containing abstracts of deeds and documents seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, particularly probate records. Some of the more significant entries include: Andrews; Baker; George; Gunter; James; Jones; Kemble; Lewis; Morgan; Needham; Prichard; Rogers; Thomas; Watkins. Throughout the text, Canning has noted the sources of his information, and provided a list of abbreviations on the front fly-leaf.

Abstract of Thomas Abbot letters.

Ring-binder containing abstract of letters written by the Reverend Thomas Abbot, a Catholic priest, which are "preserved in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Cardiff." The letters, written between 1862 and 1904 from Monmouth and Lancaster, are addressed to Bishop Brown and Dr (later Bishop) Hedley, and relate to: church business and services; alleged neglectful attitude of a priest; court case involving a priest; financial matters and deeds, particularly concerned with Coedangryd; tensions between Catholics and Protestants; possible vocations of a schoolboy and a young man to the Church; local history connected with the martyrdom of John Kemble and the shrine of St Thomas of Hereford; benefactions; neglect of Coedangred [sic]; retirement of Thomas Abbot and disposal of his effects; a debt; history of Prior Park and discussion of a circular concerning a fire there; death of Father Quaid and his will; complaints against a fellow priest; history of the "Old Missionary Altar," and later a proposal to make it a "privileged altar" following the visit of Cardinal Vaughan; death of Miss Ann Prichard of Skenfrith, subsequent events, and history of the Prichard family and Perthyre [sic] estate; succession of priests at Dowlais; and the decline of Father Abbot's health. In addition the letters contain details of Thomas Abbot's life, items of local interest and material relating to Catholic priests and families. Canning has added notes of genealogical interest in red ink.

A notebook containing a list of books and maps purchased by J. H. Canning, with the prices paid. The list is arranged in alphabetical order of author's surname and book title with cross-references between the two. The list includes items on the history of Catholicism, Welsh history, pedigrees, classical writers, heraldry, maps of Monmouthshire and books of local interest.

Catholic memorial inscriptions,

A notebook entitled 'Catholic Memorial Inscriptions from Vol. XII of the Catholic Record Society's Publications, contributed by John Hobson Matthews. 1913', described as having been "transcribed verbatim into this book by Mary Canning, August 1921." The introduction by J. H. Matthews gives his reasons for recording memorial inscriptions, and explains in some detail the distinguishing features of Catholic sepulchral monuments. The article consists of transcriptions of monumental inscriptions, principally from parishes in the Monnow valley, NE Monmouthshire and SW Herefordshire, but with a few further examples from Gloucestershire and other parts of England. The locations and physical appearance of many of the tombs are described and points of historical interest are noted. Forfeited estate papers.

Notebook containing extracts from forfeited estate papers at the Public Record Office. The introduction (Latin) describes the papers as a register and record of names, lands and holdings of papists in the county of Monmouth, compiled from information given at the Quarter Sessions in 1717. The 'Abstract of the Register of Popish Recusants and Papists' ... arranged in alphabetical order of surname, consists of tables divided vertically into columns, with appropriate headings of name, description of property, where situated, name of tenant and the rent paid. Latin letters,

Correspondence from J. H. Canning to Sir Joseph Bradney, found inside a published volume of Abergavenny Catholic Registers 1740-1838. Letter, dated 29 July 1923, at Newport, written in Latin, thanking Bradney for correspondence, followed by a discussion of Mathew Prichard, Episcopus Mirinensis, 1669-1750, ending with personal details of a family visit. Folded with this letter is a rough pedigree of the Wynn family of Cherry Orchard, apparently in the handwriting of Sir Joseph Bradney. Letter, dated 2 September 1929, at Newport, written in Latin, thanking Bradney for his encouragement and assistance in producing a book, and hopes that he will accept a copy as a gift.

Notebook containing extracts and notes from miscellaneous sources, relating to the persecution of Catholics in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, including: returns on forfeited estates in the counties of Monmouth and Hereford; items relating to the "Popish Plot", 1678-91, and the consequent appearance of supposed papists at Monmouth Sessions; letters, 1678-82, to and from the Marquis of Worcester, mainly concerned with information supplied against Catholics; diary of Walter Powell, 1605-55; material relating to Jesuits at the Cwm, 1635-1773, brief biographies of Catholic clergy; numerous accounts of searches, arrests and subsequent court proceedings against suspected Catholic recusants for various alleged treasonable, criminal or civil misdemeanours; and several petitions. The volume ends with an entry on the Boylan family, dated 3 January 1923.

A notebook containing copies and extracts, compiled by J. H. Canning in 1921, from several sources, arranged in four sections: p. 1 The first section is entitled 'Catholicity a hundred years ago in Glamorgan & Monmouthshire', by the Rt Rev. George Ambrose Burton, Bishop of Clifton; p. 53 The second section comprises a historical introduction and transcription of 'The Catholic Registers of Perthir in the County of Monmouth, 1758-1818', from Miscellanea I of the Catholic Record Society's publications, contributed by J. H. Matthews 1905. Contents of the registers may be summarised briefly, as follows: p. 61 The 'Old Register Book,' containing miscellaneous records in irregular order, mainly baptisms, 1758-99, but with several earlier entries, dating as far back as 1710; p. 112 Confirmations at Perth-hir (Perthir), 1808, 1812, 1818; p. 114 Baptismal entries, 1760-3, from the 1837 copy of the Perth-hir register; p. 118 Births and baptisms, 1799-1818, from the 'Latter Register of the Mission of Perthir'.
