Estate-wide estate management,

The papers comprise records that cannot be allocated to one of the specific constituent estates of the Tredegar estate. Papers relating solely to one of the constituent estates will be found with the records of that estate. Many of the papers listed here relate to (parts of) two or more of the pre-1806 Dderw, Friars, Palleg, Ruperra and Tredegar estates, or to (parts of) two or more of the post-1806 county-based estates of Breconshire, Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. -- John Morgan (1672-1719) of Tredegar inherited the Ruperra estates of John Morgan ('the merchant', dsp. 1715). Both the Tredegar and Ruperra estates included properties in both Monmouthshire and Glamorgan. Estate administration between 1715 and 1806 appears to have been on an ad-hoc basis, the subdivision of the Tredegar, Ruperra and Friars estates into rent 'collections' respecting neither the boundaries of the estates nor the county boundaries. These arrangements generated many individual records that related simultaneously to several estates; these records have been gathered here for convenience. -- Some records, such as those relating to woodlands, deal with an agricultural function across several estates, both before and after 1806. Other records, such as notices of assignments of leases, relate to the urban elements of the post-1806 Monmouthshire and Glamorgan estates. Other records relate to the latter days of the Tredegar estate, dealing simultaneously with the rumps of the various estates. In the case of yet further records, it has not been possible to assign them to their approprate estate. In each of these cases, these records have been gathered here for conveniece.

Surveys and rental surveys

Surveys and rental surveys that have been gathered here for convenience, and fall into two groups. The first group are those that relate to (parts of) two or more of the pre-1806 Tredegar, Ruperra, Dderw and Palleg estates. The second group of rentals relate to (parts of) two or more of the post-1806 county estates.

Abstracts of Breconshire and Glamorgan deeds

Eighteenth century abstracts of deeds relating to properties in the parishes of Llyswen, 1628-1737, Llandyfalle, 1637-1714, Bronllys, 1660, Glasbury, 1635-1703, Rhydri, 1712, Llanwynno, 1714, Roath, 1738, and deeds relating to the marriage settlement of William Morgan, esq., son and heir apparent of Thomas Morgan of Tredegar, esq., and Blanch Morgan of Dderw, spinster, 1660-61. Enclosed are drafts of the abstracts, and a copy lease of four parcels of land (31a.) called Glennydd, in the parish of Llandyfalle, Breconshire, 1783.

Schedule of papers

A list of deeds and papers, 1578-1769, relating to the Tredegar and Dderw estates of Thomas Morgan, esq., in Monmouthshire, Breconshire and Glamorgan, found in the study of Thomas Bryan, dec., 1770. A draft of AES 3/9.

Schedule of papers

Volume intitled 'Inventory of deeds & papers in drawers in the study, also of cupboards, Oct'r 1826'. The inventory of drawers numbered 1-64 is followed by the contents of cupboards and tin chests in the library, the study, the nursery and the evidence room. This volume is a draft or working copy of (AES 3/4), the original contents and the pencilled annotations being similar. -- The volume was originally used for John Morgan's cash account of receipts and disbursements on account of the Dderw estate in Breconshire, 1774-1780, the rear of the volume being intitled 'Therrow'.

Lease book

Record of deeds passed at the Tredegar estate office, giving the name of the lessee, where the premises are situated, the plot number (those with plot numbers are probably building leases), and the dates when the deed was received for examination, when passed, and when the counterpart was handed over.

Schedule of leases

A printed schedule of leases, divided into the Newport town estate, the Monmouthshire town estate, and the mineral surface estate. There are corresponding typewitten schedules for Newport, the Monmouthshire town estate, and the mineral estate, althought the annotations differ.

Manor of Brecon map

Map of Cwm-twrch

Ordnance Survey 1:10560 (6 inches to one mile) Breconshire sheet XLIII.NW / Carmarthenshire sheet L.NW / part of Glamorgan sheet III, published 1891 and covering the villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwm-twrch. An area covering Gilfach colliery and Tre-dêg has been picked out, as has an area covering Gilfach, Glyn-Cynwal-uchaf and Ty-canol, perhaps representing adjoining coal leases.

Glamorgan estate map

Map intitled 'Parliamentary schemes, session 1907', being a six-inch Ordnance Survey map of Cardiff and its hinterland, extending east to Ely and north to Ystradmynach and Cwm-carn. A number of properties, presumably the Tredegar properties, have been picked out and coloured pink, and the map has been marked for various parliamentary schemes including railways and water supply.

Hugh Jones estate (Evan Phillips's collection) rent ledger

A rent ledger, probably of the estate of Hugh Jones, esq., and relating to properties in Abergavenny, Gelli-gaer, Llanwenarth, Mynyddislwyn, Peterstone-super-montem, Rhydri, Trevethin, and chief rent due to the king in the manor of Llwyn-du in the parish of Abergavenny (fo.62), and receipts of interest on loans. At the rear of the volume is a particular of John Hay's farm in Trevethin, giving the names of the fields, the area of each in cyfeiriau (91 'covers' in all), and the number of oak, ash and beech trees in each. -- A loose note found at fo. 62, cut from a letter of 1779 from Evan Phillips at Ruperra, relates to Llwyn-du farm and the fact that the Crown claimed quit rent and Lord Abergavenny claimed chief rent, the one tenement thus having two lords. 'Mr Jones' always thought that the farm may have been a lordship of itself, and that Theophilus Morgan, who drew up the purchase deeds, may have been ignorant that it paid a Crown rent and called it part of Abergavenny manor and charged a chief rent on it. On the rear of the note is the postscript to the letter, that Neighbour Humberstone is to marry his sister's daughter, and that Parson Jones of Machen has married the natural daughter of Thomas Edwards of Tregwilim. -- At fo. 64 is a printed rental of the estate of Hugh Jones, esq., dec., in the parishes of Abergavenny, Llanwenarth, Trefethin and Mynyddislwyn, in Monmouthshire, and Peterstone-super-montem and Rhydri in Glamorgan, filled in with the rent arrears in 1776 due to the executor, and the rent for 1777 due to the widow and to the executor. -- A loose paper at the end of the volume endorsed 'Evan Phillips's account of Mich's rents of 1779' is an account (unsettled) of Evan Phillips with John Morgan for receipts and disbursements, including 'Late Mr H. Jones', 1780-81.

Loans account book

An account of interest due and paid on cash lent on mortgages and bonds, mainly to individuals and turnpike trusts. The entries include a reference to their 'page in the ledger'. Enclosed are six loose papers, including promissory notes dated 1788 and 1791 and a list of mortgages giving the dates of the original agreements, 1750-1805.
