Six letters, 1969-1972, from David Jones, artist and writer, to Colin Hughes concerning the attack made by the 38th (Welsh) Division on Mametz Wood, 1916, in which David Jones took part, and the re-creation by him of the attack in part 7 of his In Parenthesis (London, 1937). The recipient quotes from these letters in his short study entitled David Jones, The man who was on the field: 'In Parenthesis' as straight reporting (Manchester: The David Jones Society, 1979).

Twenty-three letters, 1940-1971, from David Jones, artist and writer, to his friend T. F. (Tom) Burns, nineteen of which date from the period 1940-1944 and form a valuable source for the life and work of the writer during the war years. The principal subjects discussed in the others are the history of Wales, the early history of the compass, Malory's Morte Arthur and the writer's experiences in the First World War. Twelve of these letters were printed, wholly or in part, by René Hague in Dai Greatcoat: A self-portrait of David Jones in his Letters (London, 1980).

The diary, 1916-1917, of Edmund Davies, Dyffryn Ardudwy, Merionethshire, containing an account of his service with the 17th Royal Welch Fusiliers during the First World War.
The diary, which begins in April 1916, records postings in France including action in the trenches and ends in February 1917 when the diarist was injured at the Ypres Salient in Belgium. Papers connected with the diary have been filed separately (NLW MS 23060C).

Some fifty letters, 1915-1918, in Welsh and English, to the Reverend Thomas Hughes (1868-1960), minister of Rhiw Calvinistic Methodist Church, Rhiwbryfdir, Blaenau Ffestiniog, co. Merioneth, from members serving with the armed forces in the First World War.

Notebook relating to the Welsh Guards

A notebook, [?1920s], containing transcripts of material relating to the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards's actions at Ypres, Cambrai, and elsewhere on the Western Front, January-November 1917 (NLW MS 23977iC). The identity of the compiler is unknown, but he may have been a Guardsman in the regiment and could have been wounded in action in late November 1917 (see ff. 66, 72).
The notebook consists mainly of extracts from C. H. Dudley Ward, History of the Welsh Guards (London, 1920), pp. 141-177 (ff. 2-15, 17-66, rectos only). On the facing pages (ff. 1 verso-5 verso, 7 verso, 24 verso-25 verso, versos only) are extracts from the apparently unpublished journal of a Guardsman, possibly the compiler of the present manuscript, relating to the same period. A list of the battalion's movements during the period (see History of the Welsh Guards, pp. 381-382) is on ff. 68-72, and a series of sketch maps and drawings relating to various engagements are on ff. 73-83. Also included is a booklet (NLW MS 23977iiC) containing research into the manuscript by T. H. Reinallt-James, 1981 (ff. 1-4), which however fails to identify the provenance of the Dudley Ward material; and transcripts concerning Sergeant Robert Bye, VC (f. 5).

Letters, 1917-1918, from Private John Roberts of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, to his parents in Tanygrisiau, Wales. Private Roberts was taken prisoner in Germany on 23 March 1918, and included is a notification of his death, 1 August 1918, stating that he died in an accident there 31 May 1918, and was buried at East Cemetery Gelsenkirchen, together with a photograph of his grave. = Llythyrau, 1917-1918, oddi wrth y milwr John Roberts o'r Royal Welsh Fusiliers, at ei rieni yn Nhanygrisiau, Cymru. Cafodd ei garcharu yn yr Almaen ar 23 Mawrth 1918, a cheir nodyn, 1 Awst 1918, yn dweud iddo farw mewn damwain ar 31 Mai y flwyddyn honno ac iddo gael ei gladdu ym mynwent East Cemetery Gelsenkirchen, ynghyd â ffotograff o'i fedd.

Press cuttings have been pasted on the front and back cover of the volume relating to awarding him the Military Cross in 1917 'for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty', and his obituary, 1943. Also included is an indenture of apprenticeship of William Williams to Messrs Williams and Metcalfe, Aberystwyth, 11 February 1889; testimonials and certificates of discharge, 1895-8, and his certificate as second engineer, 20 April 1897; and notes, taken by the donor's mother, of sermons preached at the Calvinistic Methodist Church, Llandudno.
