Robert Evans, Derwen, giving an eyewitness account of the pastoral life of native Sherpas in the village of Khumjung, Nepal. Evans was deputy leader of the 1953 British Everest expedition, led by John Hunt; the letter was written two months after Evans's unsuccessful attempt to reach the summit of Everest with Tom Bourdillon on 26 May 1953, three days before Tenzing and Hillary's ascent.
