An illustrated copy of The Litterary Life of Thomas Pennant, Esqr. Copy of the Original MS ... signed by Pennant, 1 March 1790, being possibly the actual copy offered by Pennant to Richard Bull in a letter dated 29 May 1790 (see NLW MS 5500C). It is followed by printed copies of some of the appendices to The Literary Life of the late [sic] Thomas Pennant, Esq. ... (published 1793), including A Letter from a Welch Freeholder to his Representative (Chester, 1784), Of the Patagonians (Darlington, 1788), Flintshire Petition (1779) and A Letter to a Member of Parliament on Mail Coaches (London, 1792); a copy of American Annals; or Hints and Queries, for Parliament Men, 1775-8; broadsheets, 1792, 1798, etc.

A volume, [1805] (watermark 1800), in the hand of 'J.W.L.' [probably Sir James Winter Lake, bart], containing an outline of Robert Southey's poem 'Madoc'.
The outline consists of a prose summary of the contents of parts one (ff. 7-111) and two (ff. 113-218) of the poem, as first published in Robert Southey, Madoc, 2 vols (London, 1805), with numerous quotations from the text throughout. A list of characters (ff. 4-5) and closing notes (ff. 218-219) are based on Southey's Preface. Also included are some of Southey's notes on Bards from the appendix to Vol. 1 (ff. 66-68); a description of the beaver from Thomas Pennant, History of Quadrupeds, 2 vols (London: B. White, Fleet Street, 1781, ESTC T113535), pp. 383-387 (ff. 71-76); several ink and watercolour drawings (ff. 2 verso, 5, 6, 7, 70 verso, 75 verso, 112, 113, 219), some based on plates in the printed work; and four prints which have been pasted into the volume (ff. 3 recto-verso, 6 verso, 85 verso). The volume was written to commemorate 'the departure of an affectionate son to Prince of Wales's Island [now Penang, Malaysia] in the East Indies on Sat[urda]y April 20 1805' (see f. 3); the new chaplain assigned to Penang in 1805 was the Rev. Atwill Lake, son of Sir James Winter Lake, Edmonton, Middlesex.

A notebook containing a concise account of 'Imports and exports of the English to and from the Levant [1786-1787] also of the Tin Trade in India [1787] communicated by John Hawkins Esqr.'. The title, on the outer cover, is in the hand of Thomas Pennant, Downing, co. Flint.

Nearly one hundred and fifty letters, 1773-1798, from Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) of Downing, Flintshire to Richard Bull at Stratton Road, Piccadilly, London, and elsewhere, with numerous references to Pennant's publications and to prints and drawings by Moses Griffith (1747-1819) and John Ingleby (1749-1808), the artists employed by him, etc.

A copy of F. Willughby and J. Ray, The Ornithology of Francis Willughby ... (London, 1678), once owned by Thomas Pennant (1726-98), naturalist and traveller (see The Literary Life of Thomas Pennant by himself (1793), p. 1), to which has been added a list of bird names in Latin and English in Pennant's hand (ff. ii-iv). Items found loose in the volume have been filed separately (NLW MS 22731iiE). A letter, 1966, tipped in on f. i, relates to previous ownership.

A holograph letter from Mat[thew] Henry [Presbyterian minister and author], from Chester, to [ ], 1694 (the illness and death of recipient's son, who appears to have been resident in the writer's home, and his burial in the chancel of St. Bridget's church [Chester], a visit paid by the writer's father [Philip Henry, Presbyterian minister and diarist], 'an aged min[ister] in the Country some miles off', to the writer's home, during the deceased's illness, and a sermon preached by him prior to the funeral) (mutilated); and a holograph letter from T[homas] Pennant [naturalist and author], from Bychton [co. Flint], to the Rev[eren]d Mr. [William] Borlase [rector of] Ludgvan, Cornwal, 1763 (points of ornithological interest, the preservation of birds, a request for information about seals).

Seven letters with related papers, 1764-[c. 1835], addressed to Thomas Pennant (ff. 3-10), his son David Pennant (ff. 13-17, 19) and David's wife, Louisa (ff. 11-12, 18) of Downing, Flintshire, on subjects including ornithology, zoology and wildlife drawings.
The correspondents are W[illiam] Myddelton, 2 March 1775, enclosing a note of hand of Thomas Pennant, 22 July 1774 (signature cut), donating £100 to a Welsh charity school in Gray's Inn Road (ff. 3-5); the Rev. Edward Williams, 24 August [?1795] (watermark 1794), including a watercolour drawing of a half-timbered house in Shrewsbury, and 26 September [1797] (watermark 1795), concerning the death of Mrs Emma-Elizabeth Corbet of Sundorne Castle (ff. 6-10); Katherine Plymley, Longnor, 18 January 1811 (ff. 11-12); Hugh Davies, Beaumaris, 5 November 1816, enclosing three pencil drawings of puffins (ff. 13-17); Margaret Roscoe, [12] August 1829 (f. 18); and [Canon] William Williams, Ysceifiog Rectory, 1 March [?1835], concerning the dilapidated state of the church at Ysceifiog (f. 19). Also included are financial accounts, 1764-1765, of the artist Peter Paillou relating to drawings purchased by Thomas Pennant (ff. 1-2).
