Guiseppe Mazzini letters to Gwilym Hiraethog
Six letters and fragment of another, 1861-1864, from Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), advocate of Italian unity, to William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), one of which is written on a printed circular for subscribers to an association to succeed the Friends of Italy (ff. 1-13). Four of the letters have been published in William Rees (Hiraethog): A Memoir by his son Ebenezer Rees, ed. by H. Elvet Lewis, M.A. (Liverpool, 1915); see also NLW Journal vol. I (1940), p. 149. Also included is a postcard, 1880, from William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), to Gwilym Hiraethog (f. 14).
Mazzini, Giuseppe, 1805-1872
A letter, 1889, to William Ewart Gladstone from the Wadebridge Liberal Association relating to the incident when a loaded cartridge was thrown into his carriage as he was passing through Wadebridge, Cornwall, in June 1889, with copy correspondence between the Association and the chief constable of Cornwall enclosed (ff. 3, 4 recto-verso); together with notes, 1930, by Henry Neville Gladstone relating to the affair, and the actual cartridge thrown.
