Three letters and a card, 1941-1958, from Augustus John to his son-in-law, Villiers Bergne, together with five letters and cards, 1968-1969, to Bergne from Michael Holroyd concerning the latter's biography of Augustus John.

Some four hundred and eighty-six letters and postcards, [1950s]-1978, from Edwin John, mainly in Paris, to his daughter Sara John; together with twelve from Sara to Edwin, 1964-1977.
Also included are nine miscellaneous letters to Sara John, 1965-1996, including one from Michael Holroyd; an exchange of letters between Sara John and Brian Sewell, October 2004, concerning Sewell's article on Augustus and Gwen John ('Feminists still haunt Augustus', Evening Standard, 1 October 2004, pp. 38-39); four letters from Edwin to his son Ben John, 1953; two letters from Edwin, 1946, 1973; five John family postcards, 1952-[?1964], from Ben John, Dorelia McNeill and Sara's mother Beatrice Dorothy John; and twelve scraps, postcards and other miscellaneous items, [n.d.].

The fonds comprises the research papers of Michael Holroyd mainly relating to his biography of Augustus John originally published in 1974-1975, other editions and the revised edition published in 1996. These include letters from the John family, researchers, British and foreign repositories, photocopies of letters from Augustus John to his family, letters to fellow artists, his writer friends and members of the Gypsy Lore Society; reminiscences of friends and family; press cuttings relating to his works; papers relating to Augustus John's autobiography Chiaroscuro published in 1952, including publishing contracts; photocopies of writings by Augustus John; publishing agreements and book reviews of the biography. Also included are exhibition addresses on the artist by Michael Holroyd; scripts written about him and Gwen John by others, papers relating to the book co-written by Michael Holroyd and Malcolm Easton, The art of Augustus John (London, 1974), together with some research papers relating to Gwen John and to other projects.

Miscellaneous papers relating to Augustus John, comprising a bill, 1930, for artist's materials purchased by him; typescript copies of talks and essays in English and French on him; a list of guests at the Augustus John memorial service, January 1962, and a copy of the address given there by Lord David Cecil; together with notes, ?1973, in the hand of Michael Holroyd.
