Part I is based on 'Llyfr Brith Corsygedol' (Peniarth MS 198) and Part II on a manuscript probably in the hand of John Jones, Gellilyfdy. There are imperfect lists of contents at the beginning of each part. Bound in at the end of the volume, also in the hand of Owen Williams, are 'englynion' ('I'r Iesu', etc.) transcribed in 1853 from a manuscript (1655) of William Salesbury of Bachymbyd; two versions of an address on 'Helynt y Cymry, eu hiaith a'u defodau, etc.' delivered at Eisteddfod Tywyn, Tre Fadog, and prepared for publication in the Carnarvon Herald; and a biography of Richard Jones ('Gwyndaf Eryri'; 1785-1848). The volume is lettered on the spine in gold: 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.

Y Llyfr Hir o'r Mwythig,

'Y Llyfr hir or Mwythig', being a collection of five hundred and sixty-six cywyddau, etc. by various authors arranged into 'books' according to subject. The poems in each 'book' are numbered separately. The poets cited include Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Siôn Cent, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Bedo Brwynllys and Siôn Phylip. The volume is dated temp. James II (see p. 382). The text is followed by nine folios of index, arranged under authors' names, by Richard Morris. Following the index are three further poems (by Dafydd ap Gwilym, Siôn Cent and Dafydd ab Edmwnt) in the hand of the Reverend Samuel Williams.
The volume is in the same hand as Llanstephan MSS 47, 48 and the end of 164.

A composite volume containing lists of Welsh words and their meanings, some in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), others from printed sources; notes in the autograph of R. Prys Morris, including references to a number of 'cywyddau', etc. by Edmwnd Prys in BM Add MSS and a few extracts from [Joseph] Besse, A collection of the sufferings of the people called Quakers (London, 1753); part of a letter from the Reverend Evan Evans [? Welsh Laws, &c.,

A manuscript containing the Welsh Laws, being a transcript of British Museum MS Harleian Titus D. II. Three folios at the beginning and two at the end contain poetry in Welsh and Latin, etc. There are also some items of a corn account.
The general style of the handwriting, which is not all in the same hand, is suggestive of the manuscripts of Dr John Davies, Mallwyd, which were copied partly by him and partly on his behalf.

Welsh grammars,

A manuscript in the hand of Moses Williams containing 'Kelvyddyd kerdd Davod' (ff. 1-5a), being a copy of pp. 10-16 of Llanstephan MS 28, with a note stating that 'This imperfect Tract I transcribed out of a MS. writ by Guttyn Owain A.D. 1455 & communicated to me by D Foulkes of Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd.'; and an extract 'Out of Huw Machno's Book' (ff. 5b-12b) outlining the fifteen faults which may be committed when writing Welsh verse, with examples. The text cites a line from Wiliam Cynwal.

Fragments of manuscripts found with MS 540B, possibly once part of Peniarth MS 326 (see D. Huws, 'A Welsh manuscript of Bede's De natura rerum', Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, XXVII, p. 492). They comprise a leaf from Gerard of Cremona's Latin translation of Aristotle, De Caelo et terra, XIII cent. (f. l); a leaf of the Middle English Dives and Pauper, XV cent. (see NLWJ, xxii, p. 347) (f. 2); a fragment of a petition in Chancery of [ ] of 'Kellilyfday' [Gellilyfdy] concerning a book borrowed in 1643 by Thomas Jones of Kirchynan [Flintshire] and not returned, the petitioner no doubt being John Jones, Gellilyfdy (f. 3); a flyleaf of a book with Latin tags, an englyn and the name Richard Mores, XVII cent. (f. 4); a bon mot of Dr John Wilkins, Bishop of Chester, XVIII cent. Mary Richards [presumably of Darowen], whose bookplate appears inside the upper cover of the volume, has subsequently added transcripts of 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Sion Tudur, Lewis Glynn Kothi, Tudu[r] Aled, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Gruffudd ap Jenkin ap Llywelyn Vychan, [William Llyn] pp. 352-51, Iolo Goch, Raff ab Robert, Henri Humphreys, and Dafydd ap Gwilim.

Trysorfa yr Awen ...,

A volume written almost entirely in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'; 1749-1817) containing poetry largely of his own composition, with some items by other poets. The volume is in two sections and there is a list of contents at the beginning covering pp. 1-145 in the first section. The wording on the title-page is 'Trysorfa yr Awen sef Casgliad o Ganiadau, Sion Lleyn, 1787,' but some of the items are of later date. The other poets represented are David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu o'r Eryri'), Robert Prich[ar]d (Robert Prichiard Sion,'Robin'r Aber'), T[h]om[a]s Edward[s] Nant, D. Edward, Lewis Morys, John Hughes ('pandy bach pentre ucha yn Lleyn'), Richard Powel, Evan Owens, Glan-yllynnay (Llanystumdwy), MrEfan Efans ('Bardd hir') [Ieuan Brydydd Hir], Evan Rich[ar]d (Bryncroes), [David Jones] Dafydd Sion Pierce ('Dafydd Brydydd hir'), Dafydd ap Sion, Owen Griffith, Hugh Lloed [sic] Cynfal, Goronwy Owen(s) ('Goronwy Ddu o Fôn'), Edmund Prys and Griffith Philip. One 'cywydd' in the volume (p. 118 in the first section) is headed 'Annerch Ieuan Bryncroes i Sion Lleyn wedi dyfod i ymweled a mi i Chappel Rhyd-y-Clafrdy pryd yr oeddwn yno yn cadw ysgol y fln 1791 y mis Medi' . The volume contains some notes in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), press cuttings and also a copy (printed) of Marwnad, neu Goffadwriaeth y Brawd Robert Roberts, o Sir Gaernarfon : yr hwn a ymadawodd â'r Byd hwn Tachwedd 28, 1802. Yn llawn 40 mlwydd Oed : wedi bod yn pregethu'r Efengyl 15 mlynedd. 8 pp. (Caernarfon : Argraphwyd gan T. Roberts, n.d.) by S. Lleyn. On p. 4 in the second section are 'Trioedd y Crinwas neu'r Cybydd'.

A manuscript containing 'A translation of the Triads ... by Mr Lewis Morris out of Mr. Vaughan of Hengwrt's copy ...', transcribed and corrected by Ieuan Fardd, 12 October 1773 (pp. 3-47); and a list of collections of Welsh manuscripts (pp. 81-87).

Transcripts of 'cywyddau' by Gryffydd Nannau, Gwilim ab Ieuan Hen, and Llywelyn Goch Amheirig Hen. The transcripts were written on two fly-leaves of Thomas Stanley: History of Philosophy, London, 1655, in the original binding with the words 'E Libris ... Salesbury e Coll: Jesu Oxon'. on the inside front cover. Three sons [William, John, and Gabriel] of Owen Salesbury of Rug matriculated at Jesus College between 1656 abd 1658.

Transcripts,

A manuscript containing transcripts by David Parry from the Red Book of Hergest, together with other poetry, the volume being compiled before it was given to Jesus College, Oxford in 1701. The contents of the volume are as follows: A Welsh Grammar copied from the Red Book of Hergest (col. 1117), with collations by Samuel Williams from Llanstephan MS 3, p. 472 (original foliation I-Vb, 1-7); a copy of the poetry on cols 1143-1356 of the Red Book of Hergest (original foliation 7-12b, original pagination 13-168, 169-265); followed by sixteen leaves at the end of the manuscript containing poems by Robin Ddu o Fôn, Tudur Aled, Rhys Nanmor and others, together with the pedigree of Sir Rhys ap Thomas.
Samuel Williams has copied a good many of the older material in a modernised orthography on the side left blank by the original copyist. There are also marginalia in the hand of Moses Williams. A note, probably in the hand of Samuel Williams, on p. 265 (original pagination) reads 'All the Poetry collated March 27 . 1722'.

A volume almost entirely in the hand of Mary Richards, Darowen largely containing poetry ('cywyddau', 'englynion', etc.) by Rowland Williams, Sion Philip, Guttun Owen, William Philip, Dr John Kent, Dafydd ap E[dmwnt], Edmwnt Prys, Robin Ddu o Fon, James Dwnid [recte Dwnn], Thom. Williams (1817), Iolo Goch, Ifan Tew Brydydd, Taliesin, Davydd ap Gwilim, Huw Arwystl, Hugh Morris, Edward Morris, Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], [David Richards, 'Dewi Silin'], Robert Parry (Eglwys fach), David Rowlands (Plas Isa, Dolgelley), Rev. D. Davies (Castle Caereinion), John Parry, Robert Davies (Nantglyn) and Hu ap Ier. ap Robert, and anonymous poems. Among other items included are a code of manners ('Dysg Vanners dda'); a pedigree of Oliver Cromwell; a drawing and a description of a brass object discovered at Hen fryn fawr near Caersiws [sic], Montgomeryshire, 1808, 'Teilyn[g]dod a theithi yr Iaith Gymraeg', etc. [from Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'): Cyfrinach Beirdd Ynys Prydain (Abertawy, 1829)]; and a diagram illustrating the civil order and the ecclesiastical order of the months. Much of the volume appears to have been written during the period 1817-18 but there are some personal and other memoranda dated to 1857. Some of the items appear to have been copied from NLW MS 2691 ('Llyfr Pant Phillip').

Morys Dwyfech], Gruffudd Kenrick Coch, William Llyn, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Ifan Dyfu, Edmund Prys ('Mr o Gylfyddyd'), Ywain Waeta, Howel Kilain, Howel ap Llywelyn Ymael [recte ap y Moel], Dafydd ap Edmund, Gruffudd ap Evan ap Llywelyn Vychan, Dafydd ap Gwilim, Gruffudd ap Gronw Gethin, Tudur Aled, Cuttun [sic] Owain, Gruffudd Llwyd ap Dafydd, Richard Gruffudd ap Huw, Gutto'r Glyn, Sion Tudur, Bedo Brwy[n]llys, Rhys Nant Mor, Sir Dafydd Owain, Wiliam Philip and 'Taliesin' [?1864], and anonymous poems. A volume originally intended as an arithmetic rule and exercise book but largely used by Mary Richards to record transcripts of fragments of 'Llyma ddeall y Pader Ynghymraeg', ['Breudwyt Pawl Ebostol'], etc., letters from Griffydd Jones (Griffydd Glan Gwynion'), Dolgelle to [Mary] Richards, undated (enclosing a gift of two books) and from Morris Jones ['Meurig Idris'], Dolgellau to the Reverend Thos Richards, Llangynyw, 1845 (a concert at Dolgellau, the double action Cambrian harp) and 'cywyddau' by Gruffydd Hiraethog, Guto'r Glynn, Tudur Aled, William Llyn, Ieuan Tew [Ieuanc], Tudur Penllyn, Huw Kae Llwyd, Llywelyn Goch Amheurig hen, Dafydd Nanmor, Gruffydd Hafren, Syr Owen ap Gwilim, Sion Philip, Bedo Brwynllys, Morys Dwyfech, Dafydd ap Edmwnd, Llowdden, Tomas Penllyn, Meredydd ap Rys and Sion Tudur. On the inside lower cover is an extract beginning 'E Mab Enogi a wnaeth dri ffug Lyfr Ynys Brydain ...' copied from a book of Sir Thomas Llwyd, 'Person Kemes', which later passed into the hands of Angharad Llwyd, Caerwys. Among a number of items pasted on the inside upper cover and fly-leaf is an engraving entitled 'Begging Devotees of China & Jugglers mounted on tame Tigers'.
