There is at the beginning a descriptive note on the manuscript and a detailed list of contents in a nineteenth century hand. Among the insets are the certificate, 1885, of the purchase by George T. Jones from his mother-in-law Catherine Evans for a sum of 10s. 6d. of manuscripts belonging to his late father-in-law; an undated letter from J[ohn] Jones ['Myrddin Fardd'], Chwilog, to [J. H.] Davies (the return of a manuscript, a payment by Mr. O'Brien Owen of Caernarfon); and a pencilled note by J. H. Davies describing the manuscript as 'Llyfr Thomas Roberts 1677'.

Gwaith Wiliam Llŷn,

A volume of transcripts by J. R. Jones (according to the entry in Cwrtmawr MS 1488B; see also Cwrtmawr MS 1000C), with some collations and annotations, of 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam Llyn. A few additional transcripts at the end, as well as some of the collations, etc., are in the hand of J. H. Davies. There is a typescript index of first lines of the poems, again with manuscript additions by J. H. Davies. Inset are another list of first lines in the hand of J. H. Davies; an offprint, from Y Traethodydd, 1897, pp. 139-50, of 'William Lleyn' by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'); and a printed prospectus of a proposed collection by 'Myrddin Fardd' of 'The Works of the Bards of Llyn and Eifionydd'.

Owen Gruffydd MS,

A volume of poetry, chiefly in strict metre, written largely in the autograph of Owen Gruffydd (?1638-1730) between 1677 and 1692. Most of the poems are by Owen Gruffydd, but the following poets are also represented: Robin Ddu, Dafydd Gorllech, John Roger, Sion Phylip, Sypyn Cyfeiliog, Dafydd ap Gwilym, William Phylip, Gyttyn Owain ('medd rhai' 'Meredydd ap Rhys' in another hand), Ifan Tew Prydydd, Huw ab Iva[n], Bedo Brwynllysg, Edmwnt Prys, Edward Morys, Matthew Owen and Hugh Morys. There is a list of contents at the beginning and the poems have been correspondingly numbered. There are 'penillion' by William Elias on p. 309b. John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') has supplied a lacuna in the manuscript from Peniarth MS 124. Almost all the 'cywyddau' in this manuscript, but not the 'englynion' and the poems in free metre, are to be found also in Peniarth MS 124, which is later in date than the present manuscript and written in a different hand. The pages have been numbered by Dr J. Gwenogvryn Evans and his report on the manuscript is in J. Gwenogvryn Evans MS 70a (under 'M[yrddin] F[ardd] 5'). If the information given on pp. 1 and 50 is correct, Owen Gruffydd was born in 1638. A note at the end (p. 238) of his elegy to Sir Roger Mostyn (d. 1690) states that the poet received fifty shillings for the 'cywydd'. There is a folio missing after p. 36 and another is wanting before p. 53.

Llenorion Lleyn ac Eifionydd,

A composite volume lettered on the spine 'Llenorion Lleyn ac Eifionydd' and described in the old typewritten handlist of Cwrtmawr Manuscripts as 'Llyfr Cywyddau etc. R. Llys Padrig. etc. fol.' Some of the poems are said to be copied from the manuscript of Rhys Jones 'o'r Blaenau' and William Elias, Plas y Glyn, Anglesey.

Barddoniaeth Owen Gruffydd, etc.

Five uniformly bound notebooks numbered 1-5 containing a collection made by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of the poetical works of Owen Gruffydd, Llanystumdwy (d. 1730), transcribed from Peniarth MS 124 (see 502 and 505), NLW MS 799 and other sources (?NLW MSS 18 and 11816, etc.), together with some printed items and (in 503) a few 'englynion' by William Elias. The lists of contents at the beginning of 503 appear to relate to Cwrtmawr MS 467 and NLW MS 799 respectively.

Barddoniaeth,

Two notebooks in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing transcripts of 'cywyddau', etc. by the following poets: Wiliam Llyn, Huw Llyn, Morys Dwyfech, Lewis Daron, Sion Wyn Owain, Kadwaladr Kesel, Huw Machno, Edmwnd Prys, Sion Philipp, Gruffydd Phylips, Huw Pennant, Lewis Menai, Wiliam Kynwal, Rissiart Philip, Richard Kynwal, Rhus Kain, Howel Reinallt, Sion Brwynog, Watkin Klewedog, Morgan ap Huw Lewis, Inco Brydydd, Dafydd Na[n]mor, Gruffudd Grug, Iolo Goch, Owain Waed da and Llywelyn Goch ap Meurig hên. Nearly all the poems are eulogies of, or elegies on , persons from Llŷn and Eifionydd. On the first page of MS 507 is the following note by J. H. Davies: 'Codwyd o lawysgrif Mr J. Glyn Davies ? Gan Myrddin Fardd' and it seems probable that the contents of MS 507 and the first ten items in MS 508 were transcribed from J. Glyn Davies MS 2 (though not in the same order), perhaps with a view to publication. The remaining poems appear to have been transcribed from various sources, including Cwrtmawr MS 454. Pasted in after the poems in MS 508 are two newspaper cuttings relating to 'Phylipiaid Ardudwy'.
