A collection of cywyddau, englynion and carols, compiled [c. 1669]-[early 18 cent], with the greater part appearing to be in the hand of John Davies (Siôn Dafydd Laes).

A volume containing autograph poetry by Rhys Jones of Tyddyn Mawr and Y Blaenau, Llanfachreth (pp. 1-215), and the Historia of Taliessin (pp. 216-242). Miscellaneous papers of Thomas Pennant and David Pennant. They include extracts from Thomas Dineley's manuscript of the Duke of Beaufort's 'Progress' through Wales, 1684; copies of epitaphs; lists of prints; a 'cywydd' to Lewis Morris by W. Wynne, and other poems; papers dealing with Flintshire turnpike roads, paupers, etc.; notes on minerals; papers and receipts relating to David Pennant's tour in Spain; receipts of innkeepers; a notification to Thomas Pennant of his election as Fellow of the Royal Society and of the receipt by the Society of presentation copies of some of his works; an appeal sent to Thomas Pennant, October 29, 1792, by the 'Liverpool Cymrydorion Society' for a subscription to enable Welsh services to be conducted in one of the episcopal churches of Liverpool; etc.

Also included is a transcript of the whole of the volume Histori Nicodemus… A osodwyd allan gan Dafydd Jones (Shrewsbury, [?1745]) (pp. 30-43); and a medical recipe for the 'King’s Evil', or scrofula (inside front cover).

A copy, made about 1788 by Cadwalader Pugh, of the poetical works of Rhys Jones o'r Blaenau. Though it does not appear to have been made from the author's holograph collection (Mostyn MS. 163), it contains most of the items included therein.The latter portion of the book was used between 1836 and 1849 as a commonplace book and contains material taken from newspapers, including The Christian Advocate, The Weekly Dispatch, The Shropshire Conservative, The Sunday Times, and particularly The Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald. The longer poems include 'Ffarwel Caerludd' by R. D., 'Cerdd y Myglys' (anonymous), 'Hiraeth am Feirion' by Owen Thomas ('Twrog'), 'Carol Plygain' by O. Williams, 'Pennillion Serch' by John Jones ('Talhaiarn'), 'Can y Crys' by Edward Roberts ('Iorwerth Glan Aled'), and 'Meirion i mi' by William Roberts ('Gwilym Aran').

Poetical compositions by Daniel Jones, together with miscellaneous papers including transcripts, correspondence, newspaper cuttings and a note relating to the births of his children. The transcribed material is largely by David Jones of Llan-non, son of Daniel Jones.

Tecwyn Lloyd], inserted loose in the volume (2 ff.). A sheet of arithmetical tables, sold by P. Sandford, Shrewsbury, [c. 1795], is pasted inside the front cover.

A further poem [?in a different hand] is on ff. 128 verso-129. Items found loose at the beginning of the volume have been tipped in on ff. i-iv; these include a list of contents of the manuscript (f. i), a printed elegy for William Owen Pughe by John Jones (Tegid), 1836 (f. iii), and a series of englynion by Siôn ap Morgan (f. iv).

'A Collection of Welsh Pennillion, etc.', in the hand of Richard Williams, Denbigh, 10 November, 1814, containing 'penillion telyn', 'englynion', and extracts from 'cywyddau' by Siôn Brwynog, Wiliam Llŷn, Goronwy Owen, Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu o Fôn'), Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'), John Jones ('Jac Glanygors'), and John Cain Jones ('Siôn Ceiriog'). Among the titles are '3 Englyns written in Peblig Churchyard', 'Englynion i Gorph y gaingc', and 'Englyn in praise of West in the Denbigh Election 1820' (with a reply).

A volume, 1855 (watermark 1845), in the hand of John Hughes, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey, containing transcripts of letters and poetry, and other texts.
The volume contains items apparently copied from an untraced manuscript of John William Prichard (ff. 1 verso-25 verso), including transcripts of seven letters, 1751-1757, from Goronwy Owen to William Morris (ff. 2-20 verso, Welsh, English), and one, 1741, from Goronwy Owen to Owen Meyrick (ff. 21-22 verso, Latin, English), all of which appear in The Letters of Goronwy Owen (1723-1769), ed. by J. H. Davies (Cardiff, 1924); a transcript of a letter, 1806, from William Owen-Pughe to Prichard (f. 25 recto-verso); Goronwy Owen's Latin poem 'On Captain Thomas Ffoulkes' Escape…' (ff. 23-24); and englyns in Latin, English and Welsh by Edward Morris (f. 24). The volume also contains a copy of a poem ascribed to Robert Duke of Normandy but probably written by Iolo Morganwg (see The Gentleman's Magazine, 76 (1794), 981) (ff. 26 verso-27); a translation into English [by John Hughes] of the poem 'Y Gorwynion' (ff. 27 verso-31); a list describing the parish churches of Anglesey and their founders (ff. 68-74 verso); and descriptions of the Fifteen Tribes of North Wales (and a few others), with the blazons of their arms (ff. 76-81 verso). Items found loose within the volume (7 ff.) have been tipped in on blank leaves (ff. 32-34, 83), with the exception of a copy, 1799, by John William Prichard, of the poem 'Yr Eneth o'r Bryn', said to have been translated from English by Goronwy Owen (see Alan Llwyd, Gronwy Ddiafael, Gronwy Ddu: Cofiant Goronwy Owen 1723-1769 (1997), p. 58), which is loose at the end of the volume (f. 137).

A negative photostat facsimile of Welsh MS. 2 in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, being an incomplete early eighteenth century collection of poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Sion Philip, Rhisiart Philip, Edmund Price [sic], William Cynwal, Evan Bry[dy]dd hir, Lewis Môn, Sion Cent, Tudyr Aled, David ap Gwillim [sic], David Nanmor [sic] and others. On p. 76 is a text of 'Brenin dlysau ynys Brydai[n]'. Later eighteenth century additions include a certificate of a declaration of an oath by Edd. Vaughan of Lanymowddy, Merioneth, 2 November, 1750, that a red heifer sold at Dinnas Mowddy and the herd from which it is taken are free from the infection now raging among horned cattle in the Kingdom.

Birley, Methodist Chapel, Cardiff, to Edw[ar]d Williams (forwarding a copy of the first volume of [John Hughes:] Horae Britannicae at the author's request) (315-16, 333-4), a copy of a printed circular, 6 December 1802, announcing literary competitions to be held under the auspices of the Gwyneddigion Society (320 + 329), and an undated holograph letter from Edward Williams to John Llewelyn, esq., Penlle'r Gaer [co. Glamorgan], concerning recipient's 'usual benefaction' to the writer (379-82).
