Miscellanea from the collection of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl'), consisting of poems by him and in his own hand, among them being 'Emyn y Tymmorau' translated from James Thomson's The Seasons and awarded a prize at the Tegeingl Eisteddfod, 1829, and 'Englynion i Fab ac Etifedd Syr W. W. Wynn, 1820, composed in a field near Wrexham; transcripts by 'Erfyl', including the 'Substance of a Sermon preached at the Baptist Chapel in Oswestry, on Sunday, August 13th, 1815. By the Revd. J. A note on f. 8 states that 'Cerdd yn dangos meddyliau Morwyn Ieuangc ddydd ei phriodas' (ff. 8-10) was published in London in 1797 but there are no known copies extant. A further poem [?in a different hand] is on ff. 128 verso-129. Items found loose at the beginning of the volume have been tipped in on ff. i-iv; these include a list of contents of the manuscript (f. i), a printed elegy for William Owen Pughe by John Jones (Tegid), 1836 (f. iii), and a series of englynion by Siôn ap Morgan (f. iv).

Also included are sketches of a dog, 1878 (f. 31), and of Abergele, 1866 (f. 67).

Davies, Hanes Plwyf Llandyssul (Llandysul, 1896, repr. 1992), pp. 253-5), mostly written by himself and relating to local events and personalities. Also included are diary entries, 1839-1872, relating to the weather and agricultural memoranda (ff. 70-81verso, inverted text).
The volume contains a Welsh carol, 1828 (ff. 1-2), Welsh poems sent as Valentines, 1850-1851 (ff. 13, 15, 33), a poem in praise of Llanover Hall, [1860s] (f. 52 verso), a poem in praise of John Hopkins (Ioan Glan Tees), 1863 (ff. 53 recto-verso), a Welsh metrical version of Mother Shipton's Prophecy, 1873 (f. 59), a poem on the death of the son of David Davies (Glan Cunllo), 1867 (f. 55 verso), and a chart of early-nineteenth century Welsh poets compiled by John William Thomas (Arfonwyson), [c. 1840] (f. 74 verso).

Tecwyn Lloyd], inserted loose in the volume (2 ff.). A sheet of arithmetical tables, sold by P. Sandford, Shrewsbury, [c. 1795], is pasted inside the front cover.

Miscellanea, including incomplete adjudications by Owen Jones on essays on the antiquities of the vale of Conway ('Henafiaethau Dyffryn Conway'), the foundation of Maenan Abbey ('Sefydliad Mynachlog Maenan'), etc.; the Elementary Certificate of the Tonic Sol-fa College awarded to William Rowland Williams, 1889 (the signatures include that of David Jenkins, examiner); a typescript copy of a poem in Welsh on the secession of Edward Stephen ('Tanymarian') to the Tory Party in 1874, with an accompanying note by R. D. Roberts, Bethesda, Caernarvonshire, to the effect that the verses were printed on the back of a postcard addressed to W. J. Parry, Bethesda, in 1877; mounted cuttings from The North Wales Chronicle, 19 October, 1934, of a report by R. D. Roberts on 'Two Gold Half Nobles of Richard II ... found in Caernarvonshire' [the one at Llanfairfechan and the other at Gerlan, Bethesda], together with manuscript notes by the author; and a typescript copy of verses by A. A scrap album containing manuscript and printed items, newspaper cuttings, etc., described on the first page as 'Casgliad amrywiol o eiddo Ionawryn Williams [see the preceding manuscript] yn cynnwys engreifftiau o'i ddiddordeb a'i weithgarwch. Ceir ynddo hefyd nodiadau ychwanegol ar rai o Gymry Manceinion . . .' The manuscript material includes a copy of an anonymous election manifesto addressed to the [Manchester] Welsh, denouncing the previous Conservative administration and advocating the return of Messrs. Jacob Bright and John Slagg as [Liberal] members for the city [of Manchester] [?1880]; a holograph letter from Joseph Parry, University College, Cardiff, to Mr. [Ionawryn] Williams, 1899 (reference to the writer's fifth opera King Arthur); a holograph postcard from Owen M[organ] Edwards, Oxford, to Mr. [Ionawryn] Williams, 1898 (acknowledging the receipt of 'englynion' and hymns); poems addressed to Ionawryn Williams at Bethesda [co. Caernarvon] (1900); miscellaneous other poems; a few biographical notes on Manchester Welshmen; etc. The printed items include copies of a prospectus (with order form attached) advertising Ionawryn Williams's forthcoming volume of biographies of Manchester Welshmen [see the preceding manuscript]; a handbill announcing 'A Liberal demonstration of the north east and south east divisions of the county of Lancaster' to be held at Manchester, 24 and 25 October 1879; the rules (with balance sheet and list of members and officials) of the Manchester Welsh National Society (1894-1895); the programme of the same society's activities for the session 1895-1896; menus and programmes in connection with St. David's day celebration dinners in Manchester (1891 and undated); the programme (with rules and list of officials) of the Booth Street East Young People's Literary Society for the session 1869-1870; a commemorative article on Ellis Roberts of Manchester by Ionawryn Williams (extracted from Y Cronicl, July 1893), and a similar article on Ionawryn Williams himself (extracted from Y Cronicl, October 1907). The newspaper cuttings, which form the largest class of insets, are of a varied nature. Most refer to persons and events connected with the Manchester and Salford area from the 1860's to the early twentieth century. They include, inter alia, obituary notices of Welshmen who had some connection with Manchester (e.g., Sir William Roberts, physician, ob. 1899, Professor Thomas Jones, surgeon, ob. in South Africa, 1900), Manchester news items of Welsh interest (e.g., St. David's day celebrations, meetings of Welsh societies, a meeting in connection with Welsh disestablishment in 1883), poems by Ionawryn Williams, and other miscellaneous verse.

Four letters, mostly in English, May-October 1831, May 1834, from John Jones (Tegid), Oxford, to Henry Jones, Merthyr Tydfil, mainly concerning Tegid's dispute with William Bruce Knight on the proposed reform of Welsh orthography (see W. B. Knight, Remarks, Historical and Philological, on the Welsh Language (Cardiff, 1830) and John Jones, Reply to the Rev. W. B. Knight's 'Remarks' on Welsh Orthography (Cardiff, 1831)).
Tegid quotes excerpts from letters of support received from Aneurin Owen (f. 1 verso), the Rev. Walter Cecil Davies (f. 2), George Phillips, BA, (f. 2) and Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) (f. 5). Also included are holograph poems, in Welsh (ff. 5 verso-6, 7, 10), including 'Merch ieuanc mewn darvodedigaeth', 1833 (f. 7), which was published in the Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 5 (1833), 56.

Account book, 1846-1856, of Rowland Thomas ('Idris Ddu', 1789-1856) of Merthyr Tudful, co. Glamorgan, containing records of payments to members of the Solid Rock of Wales Society ('Cymdeithas Cadarn Graig y Cymry') meeting at the Harp, Penllwynderi, Merthyr, together with other miscellaneous accounts and memoranda, including an account of William Howel's journey with Abel Evans (d. 1866) and the Mormons from Merthyr to St Louis, Missouri, 1849 (ff. 79-81); additions, 1859-1868, in the hand of Rowland Thomas's son, William R. Thomas, include verses in Welsh (ff. 26v, 119v), and brief details of literary competitions at the National Eisteddfod, Rhuthun, 1868 (ff. 118v-19).

A few miscellaneous accounts, 1819, are in a different hand (f. 1 and inside the covers).

A collection of papers, 1831-1949, relating to John Jones ('Talhaiarn'), accumulated by his great-niece Lilian M. Jones.
They include holograph poems and lyrics in English and Welsh, [1843]-1868, mostly composed, but some copied, by Talhaiarn (ff. 1-24). Also included are fifty-three letters, 1857-1868, from the poet to his niece, Elizabeth Anne Jones, with some holograph poems appended (ff. 25-124); seven letters, 1848-1869, from him to family members and his publisher W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') (ff. 125-37); four letters, 1869-1870, to his brother Thomas Jones (ff. 147-54), including three from John Thomas ('Pencerdd Gwalia'); a letter, 1870, from John Thomas ('Pencerdd Gwalia') to Elizabeth Jones (ff. 155-6); and three letters, 1939-1940, to Lilian Jones (ff. 157-60). In addition, the file contains various papers relating to Talhaiarn and his family, including the signed title page of his second volume of works, 1862 (f. 161), lists of subscribers to his third volume of works (ff. 163-4), and to the Talhaiarn Annuity Fund, 1864 (ff. 166 verso-167); administrative papers, 1869-1871, relating to his estate (ff. 169-83); press cuttings, 1869-1949 (mainly 1869-1870) (ff. 184-99); and various papers, including a copy of Talhaiarn's 'Gorsedd Prayer' in an unknown hand (f. 205). Among the works by Talhaiarn are the holograph poems to his niece, Elizabeth Anne Jones (ff. 1, 2, 4-8, 23, 42-3), 'The Zephyr and the Rose' (f. 9), 'Diver' (ff. 10-13), 'Psalm' (f. 14-15, 67), and the printed lyrics of 'A part song on the coming of age of William Grenville Williams', Bodelwyddan, 1865 (f. 17). Also included is a cutting of a tribute by Talhaiarn to Sir Joseph Paxton (f. 17 verso).
