Pedigrees and letters,

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. R.'], Conway to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans, 1882 (1) (an appeal - some friends are moving to reward the writer for his pioneer efforts to obtain Postal Reforms), J[oseph] Harris ['Gomer'], editor, Swansea to the Reverend Walter Davies, rector of Manavon, 1819 (1) (requesting a few communications for Seren Gomer), lines of verse in the autograph of John Ceiriog Hughes beginning 'Roedd Prydydd yn eistedd ei [sic] wrth ochor y tan ...', a (?) 'hir a thoddaid' and an 'englyn' by Ceiriog in memory of [Ebenezer Thomas] 'Eben Fardd', and a letter from J. C[eiriog] Hughes, Caersws to W. A. Swettenham, 1879 (permanent way materials on hand and wanted), a letter (incomplete) from [Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys')], Bangor to an unnamed correspondent, [18]78 (the addressee's request to have his letters returned), A. J. Johnes, Garthmyl, Welshpool to the Reverend R. Richards, Caerwys, 1836 (1) (the writer has recently been attacked for inaccuracy by the Dean of St Asaph - a request for information), H. Jones, Dinas and Pen rhiw'r kiln [i.e. Hugh Jones, Maesglasau] to the Reverend Mr Richards, Darowen, 1816-17 (2) (the writer's unhappy state and condition), W[illia]m Owen Pughe, London to Mr Ed. Jones, Minffordd Cottage, Tal y Llyn, 1812 (1) (is glad to hear the addressee has succeeded in procuring a boat for Llyn Cau) and to the Reverend Mr Richards, Llannevydd, 1819 (1) (arrangements for the Eisteddfod at Denbigh on October 6), and writing from Segrwyd, Denbigh to Miss [?A. Lloyd (erased)], 1827 (1) (replying to the addressee's letter), David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] D..., date wanting, to the Reverend John Jones, Rectory, Llanllyfni (damaged) (requesting the immediate return of John Owen of Ceidio's elegy composed and written by Goronwy Owen which the addressee has lent to Mr Richards of Llansilin, with a note from John Jones to the Reverend D. Richards), four bidding letters (David Lloyd and Gwen Saunders, Lampeter, 1807, Richard Dodd and Elizabeth Richards, Carmarthen, 1827, with a specimen of the handwriting of Alcwyn Caryni Evans when he was six years old, 1835, William Lewis and Eliza Thomas, Carmarthen, 1840, and Thomas Thomas and Eliza Evans, Carmarthen, 1848), A. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

Letters of John Jones (Tegid)

A volume made up of fourteen letters, 1819-1851, from John Jones (Tegid or Ioan Tegid, 1792-1852), Oxford and later Nevern, to various correspondents. The details are as follows: six letters, 1819-1826, to the Rev. Thomas Richards, Berriew (the education of the addressee's brother and of E. Evans [probably 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'], a 'cywydd' on the death of Mrs Bosanquet, literary matters, adverse criticism from the bishop of Llandaff [William van Mildert] of a proof-sheet of the edition of the Welsh Prayer Book which the writer had undertaken to superintend); four letters, 1820-1824, to the Rev. David Richards, Llansilin (the education of the addressee's younger brother [Lewis], literary matters, the addressee's marriage, etc.); one letter, 1839, to Miss Angharad Lloyd [sic] (the Liber Landavensis is now in the press, he has completed his Welsh version of Isaiah direct from the Hebrew); one letter, 1846, to Owen Williams, Waenfawr (literary matters, criticism of the addressee's proposed 'Vocabulary'); one letter, 1851, to [Ebenezer Thomas] Eben Fardd (re. adjudicating the 'pryddestau' on 'Golygfa Moses &c'); and one letter, 1850, to the Rev. Richard Richards [Meifod] (he is glad to hear of the addressee's success, a proposed monument to Bishop William Morgan and the Rev. Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) at Llanrhaiadr yn Mochnant, plans for a commentary in Welsh on the Epistle to the Galatians etc.). Also included in the volume are extracts, 1845, from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh 'o'r Graienyn ger y Bala' ('Brawd Nain Ioan Tegid o du ei fam oedd Rowland Hugh'), transcripts of two letters, the originals of which are to be found in Peniarth MS 11, viz. a letter, 1847, from [John Jones] Tegid, Nevern to the Lady Charlotte E. Guest and a letter, 1860, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil to W. W. E. Wynne, Esq., and an outline of 'Tegid's Feet [shoes] drawn at the Vicarage Darowen at the request of ?M. D. Jones, Darowen, 1836'.

Barddoniaeth,

A volume containing 'englynion' and other poems mainly by Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'). Pages 1-60 are almost entirely in the hand of Robert Davies while the remainder of the volume is in that of William Owen [-Pughe]. In addition to the works of Robert Davies, some of which were published in his Diliau Barddas (Dinbych, 1827), the following poets are represented in the volume: W.O. [?William Owen-Pughe] (pp. 2-3), R. B. Clough (p. 86), W. Lleyn (p. 102), and ?Gwallter Mechain, [Walter Davies] (p. 125). Apart from 'englynion' the compositions of Robert Davies include: p. 23, a hymn beginning: 'Anturiaf Arglwydd yr awr hon . . .'; p. 24, 'Cyfieithiad o Emyn Martyn Luther', beginning 'Duw mawr! beth wyf yn weled draw? . . .'; pp. 27-31, 'Marwnad . . . 'Bardd Nantglyn' and William Owen-Pughe.

Gwaith Ieuan Lleyn, etc.

A composite volume written almost entirely in the autograph of Evan Prichard ('Ieuan Lleyn' or 'Bardd Bryncroes'; 1769-1832), with some additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is in two parts, the first part (pp. 1-198) containing poetry mainly by Ieuan Lleyn, with some items also by John Jones, Glan y Gors (beginning wanting), R. Ll. Ddu, Cyllidydd, Pwllheli, 1821, Morrus Dwyfech alias Morrus ab Ifan ab Einion, Owen Gruffydd, Thomas Glyn Llifon, Rich[ar]d Hughes, Cadwaladr Cesail, Sion Roger, D. Drefriw and G. Felyn, y Parchedig Evan Evans 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir', Rod. Jones y Crydd, Dafydd Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Rhobyn or Bettws [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], W[illia]m Llyn, W[illia]m Thomas y Llongwr, Ebeneser Tomas neu Cybi Eifion, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', and [John Roberts ] 'S[ion] Lleyn'. Other items in the first part include a draft of a letter, undated, from Evan Pr[ichard] [i.e. 'Ieuan Lleyn'] to an unnamed correspondent (p. 89) (a request for [the mastership of] the free school belonging to the parishes of Rhiw, Bryncroes, Aberdaron and Llanfaelrhys if W[illia]m Owen is turned out), a (?)copy of a letter, 1791, from Ieuan Rich[ar]d, Ty Mawr to an unnamed correspondent whom he addresses as 'Enwog Fardd' (p. 95) (he was unable to attend the Eisteddfod held at Llanrwst; verse in strict and free metre), a (?)translation of a speech by Mr Hodgins [sic], an operative cotton spinner, respecting the Combination Laws, and a speech in Welsh on freedom ('From Walter Davies's Essay [Rhyddid (1791) ]'). The pages following (i.e. 191-8) appear to be in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'). Between part I and part II are some items (press cuttings, poetry, etc.) inserted by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including 'Gwaith Siarl Marc'. Preceding a number of blank pages are two letters from Ieuan Lleyn to Siôn Lleyn, the one undated (?copy), the other written in 1791 from Ty Mawr to Mr John Roberts at Rhyd y clafrdy, Lleyn, containing lines in the 'cywydd' metre by 'Ieuan Fardd Bryncroes' (another of the bardic names used by Ieuan Lleyn). Part II is in three sections, the first consisting of 90 pp. and containing poetry by Gronwy Ddu o Fôn, Robert ab Gwilym [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], Llanystumdwy, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ab Daf. ab Ieuan ab Rhys, W[illia]m Lleyn, Rhys Llwyd ab Rhys ab Ricart, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Tudur Aled, H. ab O. Gwynedd, John Fychan o Gaergai, Thomas Llwyd or penman, M.D.(qr. Morrys Dwyfech), Daf[y]dd Thomas, Michael Prichard, Llanllyfni, Humphrey Daf[y]dd ab Evan, Clochydd Llanbry[n]mai[r], Tho[ma]s Evans, Richard Philips, Gwyrfyl Ferch Howel Vaughn, Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug, Dafydd ab Rhys, Morys ab Howel ab Tudor, Sion Tudur o wicwair, Sion Cent, Mr Thomas Prys, Plas Iolyn, Edward Ralph neu Râff, Rhys Cain, Ieuan Tew Brydydd, Bedo Hafesb, Syr Robert Myltwn, Ieuan Brydydd hir, Tudur Penllyn, Syr Rhys o Garno, Daf[y]dd Llwyd ap Llywelyn Gryffydd, Esqr. o Fathafarn y[n] swydd Drefaldwyn and Bedo Brwynllys (or Gryffydd ap Ieuan ap Llywelyn fychan). There are copies of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles Creed in Breton and Cornish on pages 34-6. This section was written c. 1797-99 at Llangian and at Llanddeiniolen, where it was completed 31 May 1799 (p.90). Part IIb comprises 38 pp. and contains poetry by Ieuan Lleyn, Huw Ifan Gynt o Lanllyfni alias Hywel Eryri, y Parchedig Evan Evans alias Ieuan y Prydydd hir and W[illiam Evans or Fedw arian, preceded by a list of contents. The final section (pp. 11-54) contains poetry by Siôn Dafydd Laes (John Davies alias Penllyn), Lewis Owain o Dyddyn y Garreg, Syr Rhys or Drewenn, Gutto Glynn, S[ion] Tud[ur], D. Gwilym [Dafydd ap Gwilym], Griffith Philyp 'o Ardudwy y' Meirion', Daf[y]dd Thomas alias Daf[y]dd Ddu or Eryri, Ieuan Deulwyn 'o blwyf Pendeulwyn Gerllaw Cydweli Caerfyrddin', Lewis Glyn cothi, Thomas Prys P[la]s Iolyn, Tomas Derllys 'am a wn i' and Rhys Ednyfed, followed by a sketch of a ship ('Debora'), verses entitled 'Brynau [sic] Iwerddon', etc. and 'Sylwiadau ar Wneuthyriad Dyn'. Miscellaneous items including holograph letters and notes (? some incomplete) from Rob[er]t Davies ['Bardd Nantglyn'] to Morgan Davies, Nannau, Merionethshire, 1826 (the parliamentary election for the ?borough of Denbigh, enclosing a series of nine 'englynion' on the said election), W. Jones, Stockwell, to Morgan Davies [?the same as in the preceding letter] at Sir Rob[er]t W[illia]m Vaughan, M.P., London, 1812 (enclosing a copy of verses entitled 'Cerdd Miss Forgans fawr o Blas y Coed' by J[ohn] Jones, [Jack] Glan y Gors), W. Jones to Evan Lewis, Dolgellau [1825] ( enclosing 'englynion' in memory of the Reverend R[ichard] Hughes, rector of Dolgellau), D[avid] Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] from Waunfawr and Llandwrog school, to Morgan Dafydd, Lady Williams's footman, Nannau [see the first two letters above], 1808 (the epitaph of Edward Jones, servant of Paul Panton of Plas Gwyn, Anglesey, and Bagillt, co.
