A collection of note-books, home-made booklets, etc., which, according to a letter from the donor, Mr. Hugh R. Meirion-Jones of Manchester, published under the heading 'Hen Lawysgrifau', Y Tyst, 1 Rhagfyr 1938, were formerly in the possession of Edward Wynne, of Llanrhaeadr- ym-Mochnant, and later of Wern, Maerdy, near Corwen, farmer and itinerant Congregational preacher. 12629-12631A Three groups of note-books, etc., containing ?holograph notes of sermons, ? delivered by the said Edward Wynne. The notes of all the sermons, except three, are in Welsh, and such as are dated belong to the period [18]42-1872. In NLW MS 12630A one set of notes is written partly on the stamped cover of a letter addressed to 'Mr. Ed. Wynn, care of Revd. E. Griffiths, High Street, Swansea . . .' Incidental entries include a list of names headed 'darlith yn Bethel, tocynau 24, y derbynwyr' (NLW MS 12629A), and a note of the amount collected, ? by Edward Wynne, towards Brecon College, at Penuel, 15 June 1845 (NLW MS 12630A). 12632A. A further group of note-books, etc., all except one containing notes, ? in the hand of the aforesaid Edward Wynne, of sermons ? he had listened to, circa 1826-1834. Amongst the many preachers referred to are Samuel Davis 'un or Arminiaid', John Elias, Mr. Michael Jone[s], llanuchlyn, Henry Rees, John Roberts, Llan bryn Mair, Mr. Samuel Roberts, brynmair, Aseriah Sadrach, Aberystwyth, and Mr. Williams, Wern. Specific occasions mentioned include 'Sasiwn y bala, Mehefin 14, 1827', 'Agor Capel y Calfiniaid, Ilanrhaiadr [-ym-Mochnant], 12 o ragfyr, 1828', and 'Agor Capel [yr Annibynwyr], Llansilin, rhagfyr 24, 1832'. Included with this group is a copy of B. F. Lloyd & Co's Penny Almanac for . . . 1848, containing the accounts of [Edward Wynne as] a distributor of Y Cronicl, Y Dysgedydd, and other publications, such as diaries and hymn-books. The places mentioned in connection with the distribution of these are in cos. Cardigan and Pembroke. 12633A. A note-book containing holograph notes of sermons preached by Ebenezer Morris [? Wesleyan preacher], in the Ruthin and Llangollen circuit and else-where. The inside, upper cover bears the inscriptions 'Ceinciau yr olewydden, sef Testynau a penau y Pregethau, y rhai a bregethais yn Nghylchdaith Rhithin a Llangollen A manau eraill' . . . 'Yr ail Llyfr'. As indicated, this is the second of two or more such volumes, and the contents consisted of the notes of sixty- two sermons numbered 61-121 (the notes of sermons 73 and 79 are not actually numbered, although counted in the sequence, and two consecutive lots of notes have been numbered 82). The volume, at present, is imperfect, the pages containing the end of the notes of sermon No. 97, the notes of sermons Nos. 98-101, and the first part of the notes of sermon No. 102, having been torn out. The sermons generally bear no date, but a few were composed for specific occasions - [No. 73] on the death of the Reverend Lewis Jones, Wesleyan minister at Llangollen, [No. 79] on the coming of the new year (1831), No. 90 on the death of Mrs. Sara Roberts, Dinbran, No. 94 for Palm Sunday, 1831, and No. 109 on the birth of Ann, daughter of Eben[eze]r [? the writer] and Ann Morris (born 5 July 1830. At the beginning of the volume is a prayer, and on the inside, lower cover, four verses of the hymn commencing 'Iesu, dyfyrwch Fenaud trist'. 12634A. A note-book containing ? holograph notes of forty-four sermons ? delivered by [the Reverend] Edward Davies [Congregational minister at Cutiau, near Barmouth, 1818-1822]. Of these sermons, only the last seven are dated, and these belong to the period December 1819 - February 1820. Sixty-five pages at the reverse end of the volume record the names of places [where sermons were delivered, presumably by the said Edward Davies], circa 1815-1826, and the texts of such sermons. Preaching engagements were undertaken in Liverpool, London, and Manchester, etc., in addition to numerous places in Mid and North Wales. Inset is a single, folded sheet, containing notes of a sermon delivered May 1825. On this sheet, written in a different hand and prior to the sermon notes, is a note recording the ordination of the Rev[eren]d E. Davies, as 'pastor over the Independent Church at Cuttiau, near Barmouth', 16 September [ ]. Amongst the ministers who took part in the ordination service was the Rev[eren]d J[ohn] Roberts of Llanbrynmair. The inner covers of the volume also bear a copy of a medical recipe headed 'Catherine Jones Barmouth Receipt for Mending Cough', etc.

A collection of some forty-five unbound home-made notebooks and fragments of such notebooks containing sermons and expository notes largely in the hand of John Piers (Pierce), vicar choral of Caerwys in the diocese of St. Asaph, sinecure rector of Caerwys, and rector of Llandderfel. Two of the sermons, in English, were preached at Caerwys respectively on New Year's Day, 1641/2, and the first Sunday after Trinity, 1643, and another, in Welsh, at Llandderfel on 14 February, 1663/4. The collection also contains, in other hands, a transcript of, or selections from, the Catechism and Confession of Faith by Rob[ert] Barclay, 'a Quaker of Scotland', which was first published in 1673; a notebook of sermons by 'Mr. Turner', [16]93; and a transcript of a carol by Hugh Moris, 1707, entitled 'Ymddiddan rhwng y gwir Brotestant ar Eglwys'.

Thirteen pocket books containing notes by J. R. Williams, Rhosgadfan, co. Caernarvon, of sermons heard at Rhosgadfan [C. M. Chapel] and elsewhere during the period 1895-1929 (with gaps). NLW MS 12123A contains minutes, memoranda, and accounts of Rhosgadfan C. M. Sunday School, 1905-1906.

Sermons by and in the hand of John Blackwell ('Alun'), curate of Holywell, Flintshire, and subsequently rector of Maenordeifi, Pembrokeshire. Among them are sermons preached at Devon, 1828, Hol[ywell], 1829-1831 and Chester, 1831, the last sermon preached at Manor Divy, 7 July, 1839, a sermon, 4 July, 1830, on the death of George IV, and a coronation sermon, June, 1838. NLW MS 11545C contains two sermons preached during the period 1852-1882 and attributed to John William Kirkham, rector of Llanbryn-mair, Montgomeryshire.

Notebook, 1840-1865, of the Reverend Evan David containing sermon notes; a record of preaching engagements, 1840-1850; and miscellaneous accounts, including accounts relating to Tor-y-coed and other farms in the Llantrisant area (ff. 17 verso, 19 verso-23, 26, 32). A transcript of the baptismal record of Evan David appears on f. 24.

Notebook, 1834-1861, of the Rev. Evan David, Y Groes-faen, Llantrisant, Glamorgan, containing sermons; accounts and other particulars, 1845-1856, relating to Fforest-fawr and other farms in the Llantrisant area (ff. 6-9, 10 verso-11 verso, 14-15); medical and domestic recipes (ff. 5, inverted text 59 recto-verso); and a list of those pledging themselves to total abstinence (inverted text ff. 51 recto-verso, 52 verso). A newspaper account of the funeral of Evan David is on f. 70 verso.

Some fifty letters, 1875-1889, to Elias Hughes, Colwyn Bay, co. Denbigh. Many are replies to invitations to preach at Engedi Calvinistic Methodist church, Colwyn Bay, or to preside at local eisteddfodau but also included are two letters (ff. 14, 19) concerning the injuries sustained by Elias Hughes during the tithe disturbance near Mochdre in 1887 (see Report of an inquiry as to disturbances connected with the levying of tithe rent-charge in Wales (1887), p. 102). Correspondents include Thomas Edward Ellis (1) [1887], John Ceiriog Hughes ('Ceiriog') (1) 1883, Daniel Owen (1) 1886, Joseph Parry (1) 1884, Sarah Jane Rees ('Cranogwen') (2) 1884, 1886, and William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog') (2) 1882-1883. Also included are a letter, 1842, to the Reverend William Jones, Amlwch, from David Griffiths, missionary, relating to Madagascar (f. 77), sermon notes in Welsh by William Jones (ff. 80-4), and other miscellaneous items, 1853-1898.

A sermon, 'Pechod Gwreiddiol', by the Rev. John Jones, Aberdâr, Glamorganshire, Unitarian minister and schoolmaster. 'Natyrymenyn [sic] Medi y 3dd 1827' on f. 30 verso, followed by a list of chapels at which the sermon was delivered.

A commonplace book, 1840-1846, of David Roberts ('Dewi Siabot', [? 1821- ]) containing poetry, sermons and essays composed or copied by him during his period as a schoolmaster at Capel Curig and Waunfawr, Caernarfonshire.

A small notebook containing shorthand notes by William Howell(s), Bont[dolgadfan, Llanbryn-mair] of Welsh sermons including sermons preached at the Bala Association, 15-16 June 1819.

A note-book containing eleven Welsh sermons, 1862-1864, by, and in the hand of, Robert Jones Derfel. At the end of each sermon the author has added his signature and a date, and, on five occasions, a place-name (Clynog, Machynlleth, Maentwrog, and Manchester (2)). These signatures, dates, and place-names were subsequently deleted. At the beginning of the volume is a table of contents, and notes, which could be interpreted as suggestions to an editor or publisher, as to the order in which the author would like to see the sermons published, ? in a periodical.

A collection of exercise and notebooks, and a few loose leaves, containing poems, prose compositions, and miscellaneous memoranda [by, and in the hand of, Isaac Jones, Diserth, co. Flint]. The literary compositions, most of which are in draft form, include 'pryddestau' entitled 'Abel', 'Cartref' [for versions of these two poems, see also N.L.W. MS. 12625B], 'Y Bibl', and 'Deborah' (1872 ); 'englynion' headed 'i'r Fronwen', 'i'r Hen Lanc' (1864), 'i'r Tobacco' ( 1871), 'i'r Talegraph' [sic] (1871), 'i Fryn Gwenallt, Abergele' (1872), 'Peiriant Dyrnu' (1875), and 'Y Lloer'; miscellaneous poems called 'Cartref Cysurus', 'Sadrach, Mesach, ac Abednego' (1873), 'Mynydd yr Olwydd' (1874 ), 'Pulpud bach y teulu' (1874), 'Dyfodiad dwfr Llanefydd i Abergele' (1874), and 'Y Bwriad'; essays, or the texts of papers or addresses, on 'Golwg ar ddifyrwch y bobl yn Nghymru yn yr oes hon ar oes or blaen . . .' ( 1878), 'Gwasanaeth yr emyn' (1905), 'Gwneyd Cyfrif' (1925), 'Y Bardd a'r diwynydd' (fragment), 'Dyledswydd yr athraw i fod yn ffyddlawn tuag at yr ysgol Sabbothol', 'Darbodaeth', 'Gwyrthiau', 'Y Pwysigrwydd o iawn ddefnyddio oriau hamddenol', and 'Dringo'r mynyddoedd'; and a moral tale ('ffugchwedl ddirwestol') entitled 'Y Graith hynod, neu y ddau gymeriad'. Many of these poems and essays were composed for submission in competitions at local eisteddfodau or literary meetings. Other items include adjudications on 'telynegion' submitted for competition at a literary meeting held at Dyserth, February 1920, and in an essay competition for an essay on 'Taith Israel o'r Aipht hyd Sinai'; a copy of an announcement of a literary and musical meeting to be held at the Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Llysfaen, 2 November 1876; a report on Sunday schools [held in connection with Calvinistic Methodist churches] in the Denbigh district (n.d.); a list of preachers who preached ? in the Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Dyserth, 1917-1922; a list of preaching engagements, ? undertaken by Isaac Jones, 1893-1925, with the texts preached upon; sermon notes; and accounts, 1876-1877,? of the Calvinistic Methodist Church, Colwyn.

A note-book possibly in the hand of the Reverend John Evans, Baptist minister, best known as John Evans, Abercannaid, Merthyr. The contents consist entirely of sermon notes, 1827-1829 and undated. Inset are loose items, including a note addressed by D. Rhys Stephen, from Abertawy, to the Reverend John Evans, [18]31 (accompanying a copy of a three-stanza hymn by John Morris, headed 'Hymn dduwiol a gyfansoddwyd i'r Parch. Mr. Davies, Alltwen'), and further sermon notes, [18]44 and [18]67, bearing the initials 'J.E.'., or the signature 'John Evans'.

Two note-books, bound in one, the contents consisting of holograph sermon notes, 1830-1833 and undated [by the Reverend Thomas Rees Davies, Baptist minister, who, during the period 1829-1835, was a minister in Liverpool].

Seven home-made booklets containing sermon notes in the hand of David Rees [Calvinistic Methodist preacher, of Bronnant, co. Cardigan]. Each note-book contains the notes of one sermon; four are dated 1861, 1871, 1873, and 1887, respectively.

A late seventeenth century notebook of William Roberts, Bodwenni, Llandderfel, co. Merioneth, containing transcripts of Latin texts (Greek and Roman biographies, 'Dictamen de bonis moribus', etc.), with English translations, written in 1681; notes of sermons by Mr. Jenkin Thomas (once at Llanvilling), Mr. H. Owens [of Bronyclydwr, Llanegryn], and Mr. Morg[an] Tho[mas] (once at Hendre), 1695-1696; miscellaneous memoranda (payment for wheat at Corwen fair, payment of Bodwenni tithe, the tenancies of tenements in Llandderfel, etc.), 1694/5-1696; 'Phrases ex Erasmo'; extracts from Ovid's Metamorphosis; a Greek-Latin vocabulary; etc.
