Fine, but chipped impression of the seal of Cardiff Chancery, for Edward Le Despenser, green wax, 31/4 in. diam. Obv. An armed knight, with hauberk, sword, helmet, crested with a griffin's head and wings erect, and shield of arms of Despenser, riding to the right on a horse caparisoned with the same arms. Landaff, dated at Naples, in the 'Major Ecclesia', 29 April 1384. With ratification of the same. Dated at Windsor Castle, dioc. Sarum. Witnesses: Master Richard Suthbury and Roger Croke, canons of Llandaff; Thomas Denys, denizen of Llandaff diocese. Attestation of Henry Northlode, clerk of the diocese of Chichester, public apostolic and imperial notary. Latin. Fine, but imperfect impression of the seal of the Bishop, red wax, appended by green bobbin, 3 x 2 in. Pointed oval; St. Teilo, the Bishop, with mitre and crozier, seated in an elaborate niche, with tabernacle work at the sides. Below, under an arch, Bishop Thomas, praying; between two shields of arms: dex., quarterly, ancient France and England, for See of Llandaff; sin., diapré, a pile. s' TH...... Inspeximus by Robert Thomas, Vicar-General in Spirituals of the Diocese of Llandaff, of a deed by John ap David Grono Knaytho, Rural Dean of Grouneth, and Special Commissary, reciting the mandate of the said Robert Thomas to him to call a jury to settle the bounds of Llanguneth and Kenfek, the tithes and altar-dues, and setting forth the finding that the tithes, etc., appertain to Margam Abbey, 28 July 1443. The Duke in armour, with crested helmet, sword, and shield of arms, riding to the right on a caparisoned horse, the armorial bearings as on the rev. Background replenished with sprigs of foliage. Rev. A shield of arms, per pale; dex. France (modern) and England, quarterly, with a label of three points; sin. per fess, in chief a fess between six crosses crosslet, Beauchamp; in base, chequy a chevron ermine, Neuburgh, Earl of Warwick. Latin. Dated at Llandaff. Fragmentary seal, red wax, about 13/4 x l? in. Pointed oval. A bishop standing in a canopied niche, with tabernacled work at the sides.

(3) Confirmation by William, Earl of Gloucester (addressed to the Bishop of Llandaff and Sheriff of Glamorgan, etc.), of the gift made by William Scurlage, and confirmed by Roger de Albertune, of land at Langewi, to Margam Abbey; the land given to the same by William Scurlag the younger, at the same place, etc. Witness: Hawisia the Countess. (4) Confirmation by William, Earl of Gloucester (addressed to his Steward and Sheriff of Glamorgan, etc.), confirming various gifts by William Scurlag to Margam Abbey, of land which Roger de Albertune had given by concession of his father William at Lageleston, etc. Witness: Hawisia the Countess. (5) Confirmation by William, Earl of Gloucester (addressed to his steward, his barons, etc., of Bristol), to Margam Abbey, of the gift which Odo Sorus made of the houses which were Canterel's, in Bristol Castle. Norreis, the sheriff, etc.), to Margam Abbey, of land in Margam, houses which belonged to Baldwin the harper, outside Cardiff Castle, and an addition to the land of Syward Palmer of Cardiff, and a burgage in Kenefeg, in exchange for the land of the said Baldwin in New-burg [near Cardiff]. (8) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his steward, sheriff, barons, etc., of Wales, that he has given to Gregory, son of Robert, 3s. worth of land in Margam, viz., 20 a. of land and a burgage at Kenfig. And the said Gregory, by the Earl's consent, has given the said land to Helias his clerk. See Charters 1946, [c. 1150x1166]. (9) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his sheriff of Glamorgan, and all his barons, that he has given to Helias the clerk five a. of land at Kenefeg, lying between the land which belonged to Robert Passelewe and that which the Earl gave to Gregory de Turri and to the said Helias. And Helias will pay to Robert, the Earl's son, yearly 3 dice of ivory. Witness: Hawisia the Countess. (10) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to all his men, English and Welsh, that he has granted to the Lady Alienor, Queen of England, the three decii of ivory which Helias her clerk paid yearly for five a. of land at Kenfeg. (11) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to all his men, etc., that by petition of William, son of Gregory, he has granted and confirmed the gift made by the said William to Margam Abbey, of 1lb. of cumin, which Helias, the clerk of Queen Halienor, paid to Gregory de Turri and William his son, etc. Witness: Hawisia the Countess. (12) Confirmation by John, son of Odo Sorus, to Margam Abbey, of the house and land 'Canterel' in the castle of Bristol, in accordance with the gift of his father, by the hand of Brother William de Claravalle, then abbot thereof. (13) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his sheriff and barons 'de Gualis' [of Wales], that he has granted permission to the monks of Margam to make a fishery in Kenefec water, if it can be made without prejudice to the mill which he intends to make therein. Witness: Hapsa the Countess. (14) This charter has been erased from the roll. (15) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his sheriff of Glamorgan, etc., that he has confirmed to Margam Abbey the gift of land by Geoffrey Sturmi, and Roger his son, etc. Witness: Hawisia the Countess. (16) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his sheriff of Glamorgan, etc., that by the petition of Roger and Richard, heirs of Geoffrey Sturmi, he has confirmed the grant made by Geoffrey Sturmi to Margam Abbey of land in Margam. See Charter No. 1944, [c. 1150x1176]. (17) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his sheriff of Kardiff as to the land of Blakescerra, which is in dispute between Margam Abbey and Richard de Kardiff, that he has given it to Margam Abbey in exchange for their land of Novus-Burgus [near Cardiff], long before the said Richard has any land in Wales from the said Earl, therefore he warrants it to the Abbey. Witnesses: Hawisia, the Countess of Gloucester, Master Samson, David the chaplain. (18) Notification by William, Earl of Gloucester, to his steward, etc., that he has confirmed the gift which Griffin ab Ivor has made to the Abbey of Margam by hand of Brother Meiler Awenet, for making a hermitage or abbey if possible, viz., upon the water of Taff, all the land called Stratvaga, and all Brenkeiru, and from Berkehu-taf to Bargan Reinni, and all Karpawardmenet, and all Maislette, and from Mauhanis head to Taf, and fisheries in Taf, and all the land of St Gladus, with its pastures, as far as Brohrucarn, and on the other side of St. Gladus as far as hen-glau, i.e., the oldfoss, as far as the water called Killiha, and all the land of Masmawan. Witness: Hawisia the Countess. (19) This charter has been erased from the roll. (20) Gift by William, Earl of Gloucester, to Walter Lageles, of the land which his father held, for 8s. yearly rent. Witnesses: Ralph, clerk of Newcastle; Robert de Cantelo William, son of Wronu; Maurice, Kenewreg, and Philip, sons of Yago. (3) Quitclaim by Ener ab Knaytho to Margam Abbey, of his right in the moor of Treykik. Sworn on the Margam holy relics. Witness: Elias, Bishop of Llandaff. (4) Confirmation by Milo, son of Cadiuor, with assent of his uncles Milo and Urban, to Margam Abbey, of a portion of his land of Penvei, between the old road which leads to La Rigge through the middle of Hanginge groue; and lands below the lake, which were in dispute between the said uncles and the monks; the land on the west of the lake towards the boundaries of Herebert Scurlag, and the land which John Kayrus his grandfather gave to the monks. (5) Quitclaim by Maddock vahhan, son of Madoc ab Knaytho, to Margam Abbey, of right in the moor of Treikik. Sworn on the holy relics of Margam. (6) Undertaking by Robert de Colewinestun to pay yearly to Margam Abbey 20d. for land at Blakeburhe, which the monks had of the gift of Walter de Regni. (7) Agreement between D. Gilebert de Turbeuile and Margam Abbey, whereby the said Gilebert gives in exchange to the Abbey land in Newcastle, on the road from Kenefec to Keyrdif, beginning at Wytewelle, and between the land of Thomas Cradoc and that of William Godmon, for other land in the same fee of New castle, near the hedge of Lagelestone, and in the fee of Tegestowe. See Charters No. 169. Dated 10 June 1258 (The day before St. Barnabas' Day). (8) Gift by Philip, son of William de Penvey, to Margam Abbey, of land called Langaker, towards Marputte, Sortacre, etc. For 60s. Dated 17 April 1261 (Palm Sunday). (9) Gift by Robert Russel of Penvey, son of Mileth, with assent of Agnes his wife, to Margam Abbey, of lands near the 'hanging grove', and the road which leads from Eweny towards Langunith, etc. For 60s. Dated 4 April 1261 (St. Ambrose's Day). (10) Gift by Herbert Scurlarg' to Margam Abbey, of land lying between the road which leads to the mountains along the well of Ulf, as the water descends from the same road by the south part to the way which leads to the mountains; and likewise all the land adjoining that road to the water on the east, and then as the stream comes through Sliddridge putte and descends transversely on the north, and then by a straight line along the mountain between Russelue putte and Castelstude, and then to Coytsays to the road below Cadoc's well on the west.
