Career and honours,

Letters and papers, 1946-2007, relating to the composer's career at University College, Cardiff, 1946-1967; honours awarded to him by various colleges and universities, 1971-2007; his appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, 1983; and the tribute paid to him as one of five 'Welsh Legends' during the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre, November 2004.

Commissions and invitations,

Correspondence, 1950-2008, mainly relating to the commissioning of new works, performances and invitations to conduct, adjudicate and give lectures. They include one general group and fourteen specific groups of correspndence with radio and televison companies, the Welsh Arts Council, the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Welsh National Opera, the National Eisteddfod, orchestras, festivals, record companies and publishers, and correspondence relating to music competitions.

General correspondence,

General correspondence, 1947-2010, comprising mainly letters from performers (individuals, ensembles, orchestras, choirs, etc.), composers, librettists, artists, friends and other individuals. They relate to the commissioning and performance of Alun Hoddinott’s work, the commissioning of works by others, publication and recording of works, festivals (including the Cardiff Festival of Twentieth Century Music), working tours and visits. They often contain references of a personal nature and many are addressed to both the composer and his wife. Occasional replies are included.

Miscellaneous sketches,

Numerous sketches, mostly fragments and untitled, which to date (1 February 2012) have not been identified. A few untitled ink scores are included.

Personal, family and miscellaneous letters,

Telegrams, postcards and greeting cards, many relating to first performances of works and birthday celebrations; also letters of thanks and requests for autographs. Some postcards from family members are included; together with letters of sympathy on the death of the composer.

Scrapbooks and press cuttings,

Scrapbooks containing material relating to the composer's life and work, but mainly pertaining to performances of his works, both at home and abroad. They comprise press cuttings, concert programmes, radio listings, press releases, reviews, CD sleeves, etc., and occasionally letters. Material relating to the Cardiff Festival of Music, visits and tours abroad, and honours awarded, are also included.
