Engagement and appointment diaries,

Comprises a small group of desk diaries and pocket diaries. Most of the contents are blank apart from brief notes of John Morris's engagements and appointments. Some of the diaries also have a few loose papers inside.

Labour Party leaflets, pamphlets, election addresses etc.,

Miscellaneous printed items, mainly of political interest. Many are the publications of the Labour Party, the Labour Party Wales or the Aberavon Constituency Labour Party. Some of the publications are those of the Welsh Office. There are also some parliamentary papers, and orders of motions and orders of the day in the House of Commons. There are election manifestos, addresses and leaflets, publications (mainly of political interest) issued by various groups, and a small quantity of material of legal or constitutional interest.

Letters to John Morris,

Comprises general correspondence to John Morris, many from constituents, together, in many cases with copies of his replies or replies from various government departments or ministries. There are often draft replies by John Morris, prepared to be typed up by a secretary. The files include many invitations to John Morris to attend various events and functions, sometimes to deliver lectures.

Comprises general correspondence to John Morris, 1987-92, together with, in some cases, typescript copies of his replies. On occasion, there are draft replies of letters by John Morris to be sent out, prepared to be typed up by a secretary. There are many letters from Aberavon constituents, together, in some cases, with replies from various government departments and ministries. There are also letters inviting John Morris to an array of functions and events. Many of the correspondents write to John Morris seeking his advice on legal matters and issues.

Letters to John Morris, 1957-1983, together with, in some cases, typescript copies of his replies. Many of the incoming letters are from other politicians and from officials of the Labour Party, some are from the constituents of Aberavon. Many of the letters from politicians are written in their capacity as ministers of the crown and penned in response to various constituents' problems. There are many letters from prominent Labour politicians. Many letters invite John Morris to attend various functions and events. The letters discuss all kinds of subjects and themes, many relate to matters within the Aberavon constituency.

Notes for speeches and addresses,

Manuscript notes, the great majority of which are in the hand of John Morris. Some are notes for speeches and addresses and when introducing speakers, some are notes on issues or themes, and a few are notes on problems and difficulties faced by his constituents in Aberavon. There are also a few financial notes.

Correspondence and papers, 1965-95, on specific subjects, mainly of political or legal interest. These include the British steel industry, defence, nuclear testing, leasehold reform, and the press. Several of the files concern the internal administration of the Labour Party, various bills and acts of parliament, and a few derive from John Morris's visits to foreign countries. There are also files on the general elections of February 1974, October 1974 and 1979, and on the European referendum of 1975.

Typescript speech notes, memoranda, drafts of reports, policy documents etc.,

Typescript items including many of the typescript notes for John Morris's speeches, various reports and memoranda, circular correspondence, the texts of parliamentary questions put down in the House of Commons, some legal papers, discussion papers and notes drafted by John Morris and others, documents produced by sub-committees and working parties of the Labour Party, typescript press and news releases, together with various drafts of Labour Party manifestos, policy documents and election addresses and circulars.

Welsh Affairs,

Correspondence and papers on themes of Welsh interest, 1964-1979, especially the devolution debate within the Labour Party in the 1970s and the March 1979 referendum campaign. There are important documents deriving from the devolution campaign. There are also files on the Carmarthenshire by-election of July 1966, Wales TUC, Development Corporation for Wales, and Welsh Council of Labour, bilingual road signs in Wales, local government re-organisation in Wales, and the Welsh language. There are also some files in relation to Wales in series B1, namely B1/5, B1/20, B1/24, B1/43 and B1/45.
