Island Farm Prisoner of War Camp papers

Papers, 1946-2017, of Captain Ted Lees, relating to Island Farm Prisoner of War Camp, Bridgend. Captain Lees was the camp's Intelligence Officer and interpreter during the period 1946-1948, when it held some of the most senior German officers, including Feldmarschall Gerd von Rundstedt.
The papers include a nominal roll of senior prisoners compiled by Lees (ff. i-ii, I-XVI); some eighteen letters to Lees, from von Rundstedt and others, 1946-1948, 1957 (ff. 1-21); a typescript statement by von Rundstedt concerning the Blomberg-Fritsch affair of 1938 (ff. 22-25); a typescript memorandum, dated 9 July 1947, from a prisoner to a 'Herr Bieri' [?Frederick Bieri of the IRCC], concerning the Geneva Convention (ff. 30-36); Lees's manuscript recollections of von Rundstedt, 1953 (ff. 54-57); and a copy of a War Office urgent memorandum (U.M./4202(P.W.1m)), dated 8 September 1947, enclosing a categorised nominal roll of senior German officers detained in the UK (ff. 38-53). The letters to Captain Lees, mostly in German, are from Generalmajor [Walter] Leuze, 10 May 1946 (f. 1), [Generalmajor Hans] Erdmann, 3 December 1946 (f. 2), von Rundstedt, 25 December 1946 (f. 3), [Generalmajor Burkhart] Muller-Hildebrand, 2 February 1947 (ff. 4-5), [Konteradmiral] Hans Voss, 13 August 1947 (f. 6), General der Flieger Hans-Georg von Seidel, 14 August 1947 (f. 8), General der Artillerie Anton[-Reichard Hermann Friedrich Maria] Fr[ei]h[er]r v[on] Bechtolsheim, 19 August 1947 (f. 9), Dr Rudolf Aettig, 9 December 1947 (f. 11), [General] Gunther Blumentritt, 26 February 1948 (f. 13), and [General Edwin Graf von] Rothkirch [und Trach], 1 May 1948 (f. 14). Also included are a letter to Lees's wife from von Rundstedt, 10 February 1948 (f. 12), a Christmas card from Voss, made in camp, [1946x1948] (f. 17), a note from Voss certifying the handing over of medals to Captain Lees, [1946x1948] (f. 18), and correspondence, 1957, between Lees, Wilhelm Bauer de Betaz and a Manchester bank, concerning the whereabouts of Bauer de Betaz's medals (ff. 19-21). Items subsequently added to the papers include typescript translations of two of the letters into English (ff. 7, 15), photocopies of parts of the Blomberg-Fritsch and Geneva Convention typescripts (ff. 26-29, 37, kept for conservation purposes) and printouts of web pages relating to Lees and von Rundstedt, 2010, 2017 (ff. 62-64).

A collection of papers, [1950s]-2013, relating to Brenda Chamberlain, comprising three letters, 1955-[?1964], from Chamberlain on Bardsey Island and Ydra, Greece, to her friend Henry [Mitchell], concerning personal news and her work (ff. 1-6), together with one letter, 27 September 1971, from Joan Rees, Bangor, to Mitchell, belatedly informing him of Chamberlain's death (ff. 7-8); and manuscript fair copies, probably in Chamberlain's hand, [?1950s], of four poems, 'Endymion's Sleep', 'Midwinter', 'Islandman' and 'What the old man said' (ff. 9-13).
The letters discuss Chamberlain's painting 'The Acrobats at Practice', then recently purchased by Mitchell (ff. 1-2 verso), and a funeral on Ydra (ff. 3-4). A version of 'Islandman' was published in The Green Heart (London, 1958), p. 27; drafts of 'Midwinter' are NLW MS 21508B, ff. 1-6. Also included are newsletters, 2011-2013, of Cyfeillion Murluniau Brenda Chamberlain ar Enlli / The Friends of the Brenda Chamberlain Bardsey Murals (ff. 15-22) and a cutting from The Times, 21 September 1955, p. 3 (f. 14).

The papers comprise: (i) proofs, drafts and related correspondence of Julian Thomas, 1917-1938; (ii) proofs of Edward Thomas, The Last Sheaf (London, 1928) with corrections [?in the hand of Julian Thomas]; (iii) papers, 1935-1937, relating to the Edward Thomas Memorial Fund; (iv) typescript copies, [1938], of letters (1897-1916) of Edward Thomas to David ('Dad') Uzzell; (v) printed books, periodicals, offprints and cuttings, 1913-2011, mostly relating to Edward Thomas; (vi) family photographs; (vii) five photographs of Reginald Thomas, together with an official message of sympathy on his death from Winston Churchill, Secretary of State for War, [1918], and the 'King's Message' accompanying the Memorial Plaque (see xvi); (viii) some fifteen family postcards, 1929-1992; (ix) passport, 1931-1938, of Edward Eastaway Thomas; (x) miscellaneous photographs and papers of David Christopher T. Also included are: (xiv) a first edition copy of Edward Thomas, The South Country (London, 1909), inscribed by him on the half-title page 'To Father & Mother 15.XI.09', with a few further annotations in pencil in a different hand; (xv) a Morocco leather case containing a sepia photograph, [1916x1917], of Corporal Edward Thomas in uniform; (xvi) the bronze Next of Kin Memorial Plaque issued to Reginald Thomas' family following his death; and (xvii) a stamp containing the monogram 'MH' or 'HM' in a case decorated with a rose design.

Ruth Bidgood poems

Some one hundred and seventy-five original poems by Ruth Bidgood, 1966-2011, mostly typescript, some are emended and a few are in manuscript (ff. 208, 212, 214, 216-217, 219).
The majority of the poems have appeared in various periodicals, as recorded by the author on the individual folios. A few only have subsequently been published in collections, including 'Cwm Pennant' (ff. 132-133) and 'Encounters with Angels' (ff. 195-201) in Symbols of Plenty (Norwich, 2006), 'Complaints' (ff. 66-71, 187-189) and 'Bringing Home the Bride' (ff. 169-170) in Hearing Voices (Blaenau Ffestiniog, 2008), and a revised version of 'Reading a Landscape' (ff. 177-181) in Time Being (Bridgend, 2009). 'The Zombie-makers' (f. 38) and 'Brianne 1970' (f. 42) were first published in Matthew Jarvis, Ruth Bidgood (Cardiff, 2012), pp. 133-134. There are multiple copies or drafts of some poems, including 'Complaints' (ff. 66-71, 187-189), 'Summerers' (ff. 129, 152), 'Apparition' (ff. 171, 208), 'Reading a Landscape' (ff. 177-181), 'Windblow' (ff. 182, 218-219), 'Elan in Autumn' (ff. 193, 213-217) and 'Looms' (ff. 194, 210). A list of contents (for ff. 1-194) in the hand of the author is ff. i-ii; the order has subsequently been revised by her. Since the author usually disposed of typescripts once the poems had been collected, this volume includes rare examples of her work.

Bethania, Aberfan Book of Remembrance

Facsimile copy of a calligraphic book of remembrance to deceased victims of the 1966 disaster at Aberfan, Glamorgan. The original volume was displayed at Bethania Independent chapel, Aberfan, and contained the names, dates of birth, and age upon death of 143 individuals (117 children and 26 adults) who died in the disaster on 21 October 1966, their names arranged under the month in which they were born. The official number of fatalities was 144 individuals (116 children and 28 adults). The identity of the calligrapher, and the circumstances surrounding the creation of the original volume, was unknown to chapel Trustees when asked in 2007.

John Cowper Powys letters to Ronald Hall

Some thirty letters, 1951-1960, from John Cowper Powys to Ron[ald] Hall, [?Coventry and Exeter] (ff. 1-61), three of which are incomplete (ff. 5, 11-13) and seventeen of which are in the hand of Powys's companion Phyllis Playter, as his amanuensis (ff. 14-57). The letters, some of which include line drawings by Powys, refer mainly to literary topics, including Powys's own works in progress, and to health and family matters. There are references throughout to Henry Miller. Also included are typescript transcripts of the letters, [?2000s] (ff. 62-93).
