Transcripts and extracts

One of forty-one volumes containing transcripts of, and extracts from, parish registers and bishops' transcripts of parish registers principally from Monmouthshire, in the autograph of Bradney, with several insets in the autographs of John Hobson Matthews (Monmouth), Francis Green (St Davids), John Davies (Aberystwyth) and others. This volume contains transcripts and extracts from the parish registers of Panteg, 1598-1785; Llanishen, 1601-1775; Llanllowell, 1664-1762; Llangibby, 1678-1806; Llangoven, 1691-1745; Llanvapley, 1699-1812; Goytrey, 1700-1778; Trostrey, 1723-1811; Pen-y-clawdd, 1728-1806; Bettws Newydd, 1736-1810; and Oldcastle, 1794-1836.

Valor ecclesiasticus

A manuscript containing the names of all rectories 'in the kingdom of England and Calais and the Marches thereof' of the annual value of over £10, arranged in dioceses, deaneries and counties, followed by the names of all vicarages in England, Wales and the Marches of the annual value of over £10, similarly arranged, all having been transcribed from the Liber Regis in the First Fruits and Tenths Office.

Bangor Bishopric foreshore rights,

Letter (17 pp.), 1885, from W. J. Hardy, Chancery Lane, London, outlining the result of searches carried out among records at the Public Record Office (now The National Archives), Lambeth Palace, and the British Museum, concerning the Bishop of Bangor's foreshore rights, including wreck of the sea, within all his manors and lands. Also included are extracts from, and abstracts of, documents, 1284-1715, from the three repositories; together with an abstract of a report entitled 'Bangor Bishoprick Estates. Foreshores and Waste Lands', prepared by H. W. Hewlett in 1866.

The tribal system in Wales examined

A typescript copy, 1940, of 'The Tribal System in Wales Examined' by Timothy Lewis (1877-1958), a version of which was published as 'The Tribal System in Wales' in the Economic History Review, second series, 6 (1954), 297-304, and also 'Seebohm's Tribal System of Wales' in ibid., second series, 9 (1956), 16-33.

A statement signed by Ebenezer Richard on behalf of the Cardiganshire Calvinistic Methodist monthly meeting, held at Ponterwyd, 19 September 1833, certifying that Phillips was 'an Accredited Preacher in the Welch Calvinistic Connexion'; a letter, 5 December 1839, from Lewis Edwards, Bala, to Phillips; an account of 'The Bangor Controversy - 'Dadl Bangor'' occasioned by a lecture given by Phillips at the Tabernacle Chapel, Bangor on 19 November 1850 on 'Romanism, the Church and Dissent'; a copy of John Phillips: Dadl Bangor, yn cynnwys Sylwadau a draddodwyd mewn Darlith Gyhoeddus ... (Caernarfon, 1852).

Photostat facsimiles of two letters, 1864-1865, from 'Talhaiarn' to his niece Elizabeth Anne Jones, of a psalm tune composed by her with English and Welsh words by 'Talhaiarn', and of two letters, 1922, from Elizabeth Anne Jones's daughter Lilian M. Jones, Craigfechan, near Ruthin, to Sir John Ballinger, with a list of 'Talhaiarn''s material transferred to the National Library in 1922.

Personalia and miscellanea

The file consists of miscellaneous items accumulated by Dr Roderic Bowen during the course of his career. They include copies of his election address circulated to the Cardiganshire electorate in 1945 and 1951, photocopies of papers relating to Dr Bowen's appointment in 1946 to act as Judge Advocate at a military court for the trial of war criminals, a 1950 general election poster and a full transcript of an interview, 8 August 2000, between Dr Bowen and Matt Cole of Birmingham University. In this interview Dr Bowen reflects in some detail on his life and the major landmarks in his professional career.

A steward's account book of Newtown (Montgomeryshire) Wesleyan Circuit for the period 1830-1867. The accounts are almost entirely in the form of statements of receipts and disbursements in respect of successive quarterly meetings. Insets in the volume include a receipt, [18]48, from Thos. Kempster, Welsh Pool, to the Newtown Circuit for the payment of £31.3s. in settlement of a claim; statements of prospective income and present income, 1866; and a holograph letter from Jno. Davies, Newtown, circuit steward, to the Reverend Chas. Prest, Islington, London, and a reply, 1866 (the division of the circuit and the possibility of a grant towards the support of ministers at Newtown and Welshpool).
