Deeds relating to the estates of the Ottley family of Pitchford Hall, Shropshire, mainly in the areas of Bridgnorth and Pitchford, with some lands in adjoining counties, including almost a thousand medieval deeds.

Estate papers and title deeds of the Mathafarn estate, which were identified as a distinct group within the Gogerddan archive by Glyn Parry at NLW. Mathafarn was gained by Gogerddan when Thomas Pryse married Maria Charlotta, daughter of Rowland Pughe, c. 1738. Gogerddan sold the Mathafarn estate in 1752 but the deed confirming the sale to Dame Frances Williams Wynn (acting for her son, Sir Watkin) is dated 1754. No definite reason can be given for the retention of the title deeds at Gogerddan after the sale of the Mathafarn estate to Wynnstay. These may be the deeds which were retained to settle a dispute with Mr Owen (letter from John Chambre, 3 Sept. 1754, papers of Thomas Pryse, ref. GCC1/15)
This section includes title deeds, 1403-1754, family settlements and probate records, 1505-1742, mortgages, 1569-1734, mining leases, 1698-1713, legal papers and arbitration awards, 1546-[c. 1743/4], and letters, 1704-1734. The Mathafarn papers also incorporate a trust of the Caethle estate in Tywyn, Merioneth, for which William Pughe acted as trustee, 1505-1726.

This group represents the deeds and papers, 1428-1788, described in a schedule compiled in 1828 by the Aberystwyth attorney William Jones, with other additions of deeds and estate papers which have been deemed relevant. The William Jones schedule lists deeds and papers once kept at Buscot Park. relating mainly to the estates of the Lewes family of Abernantbychan. These comprised an estate in Llangors and Llanfihangel Nant Bran, Breconshire, the Abernantbychan and Coedmor estates in south Cardiganshire, and lands in Pembrokeshire which had been accumulated in the seventeenth century by Nicholas Lewes of Hean Castle. The estates were acquired by Walter Pryse after the death of George Lewis Langton in 1738. The main groups described in this current catalogue are the Breconshire estate papers and title deeds, 1488-1826; and Abernantbychan estate papers and title deeds, 1416-1918, [1918x1946], which include records of the coal mining industry in Pembrokeshire during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Edward Loveden Loveden’s purchase from the Peterwell estate in 1780 appears to have been managed with the other south Cardiganshire properties belonging to Gogerddan. There is also a small groups of deeds and documents relating to an estate in Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, and the Priory at Cardigan, 1428x[1774].
The contents of the bundles described by William Jones are quite diverse so researchers may need to consult several files to discover documents relating to the same property or subject.

Deeds and documents relating to, or collected by, the Wynne family of Bodewryd.

Documents acquired by Paul Panton (1727-1797) of Plas Gwyn, esq., antiquary, and his son Paul Panton, junior (1758-1822), together with family documents (no. 131, press cuttings, c. 1902-1913, probably strayed into the collection at a later date). Arranged chronologically.

Letters exchanged between members of the Maurice and Owen families of Clenennau and Brogyntyn, and other correspondence from friends or associates in Wales and England, together with a number of important official documents deriving from county administration in Caernarfonshire during the Tudor and Stuart periods, 1485, 1573-1698. Many of the early letters and papers, 1580-1622, relate to the joint deputy lieutenancy in Caernarfonshire of Sir William Maurice and Sir John Wynn, showing their preoccupation with the raising and organisation of militia troops for the defence of Caernarfonshire and for despatch to Ireland. Other topics include Sir William Maurice's position as deputy vice-admiral of North Wales and the protracted civil lawsuits in which he was engaged. The collection also constitutes an important historical source for the conduct of the Civil War in North Wales. Items from that period primarily concern Sir John Owen and his brother, Col. William Owen, Royalist commanders at Conwy and Harlech respectively, and their subsequent treatment under the Commonwealth and Restoration, 1643-1666. Many of the letters from 1678 to 1698 reveal the life of Sir Robert Owen, his debts, estate business, cultural interests and attachment to the Jacobite cause, together with contemporary political news. Apart from individuals already mentioned, prominent correspondents include the Privy Council of Elizabeth I, mostly through Henry Herbert, President of the Council in the Marches of Wales, 1587-1600; Sir Henry Johnes of Abermarlais, 1605-1616; Ralph, Lord Eure, 1607-1617; members of the Brynker family, 1603-1681; the Wynn family of Glyn and Sylfaen, 1625-1697; the Anwyl family of Park, 1636-1693; Charles I, Prince Rupert and Prince Maurice, 1642-1647; Lord Byron, 1644-1648; John Williams, Archbishop of York, 1645-1646; George Twisleton, 1649-1660; the Godolphin family of Abertanat, 1658-1698; John Gadbury, 1679-1688; and Edward Lhuyd, 1696-1697.

This catalogue of Pitchford estate records (also known as the 'Pitchford MSS') was prepared by the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 1963, when the records were still housed at Pitchford. In 1983 the National Library of Wales purchased all the items offered for sale by C.R.A. Grant and the owners of the estate. However, not all the papers listed by HMC in 1964 were in fact offered for sale. Nos 2-12 are now held in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, Kings College London; they comprise military correspondence, 1805-1903, and military miscellanea, 1811-[post-1945]; the Liddell Hart Centre's online description of them is on AIM25, <www.aim25.ac.uk>. Nos 108, 111, 125, 127, 242 and 244 are also marked "Not in NLW" in the paper schedule, and Nos 143-156, 261-265, 270-271, 276, 303, 322-324, 359, 382, 386, 415-424 451, 461, 464-465 and 546-552 are marked "Not on [or in] Sale to NLW"; Nos 23, 31, 72, 113, 204 and 317 appear to be cross-references; No. 74 was not used; and No. 502 appears to be the dorse of 501, in which case both numbers refer to a single item.
