Miscellaneous papers, including an extract 'From the Mabinogion of Lady Guest' [cf. The Mabinogion ... translated with notes, by Lady Charlotte Guest (London, 1877), pp. 74-6], a list of early Welsh books (in the autograph of [Thomas Edward Ellis], an extract from Kinmel MS 76 [NLW MS 1576] relating to Thomas Lloyd of Penmaen, and a bibliography entitled '"Y Bardd Cwsc" by Elis Wyn o Lasynys' [cf. The Journal of the Welsh Bibliographical Society, Vol. IV, pp. 199-208]. There are also a number of blue wrappers from past issues of 'Beibl Peter Williams' (1770) and the Welsh edition of Cann's Bible (1790) with printed proposals, Trefecca, 1786, relating to the latter, and part of a notebook (eighteenth century), which belonged to David Jones of Bryn y Rhig near Dolgelly and others, containing a few 'englynion', etc.

A composite volume consisting mainly of a commonplace book of Rice Pierce (ob. 1766), rector of Llangelynnin, Merionethshire. The contents include poetry in Welsh, English, and Latin by Rice Pierce; ecclesiastical precedents; lists of bishops of Bangor, St Asaph, Llandaff and St Davids, deans of Bangor and archbishops of Canterbury; verses by Tho[mas] Owen of Aberffraw; 'Descriptio Salsae Paludis, Wallice Pwllheli'; entries of birth and/or baptism of children of Hugh Thomas of Hendre [parish of Llangelynnin], 1685-7; lists of beneficed clergy in individual parishes in Anglesey; the 'valor' of benefices in the dioceses of Bangor and St Asaph; notes on Oxford Colleges built on the site of old Halls; a list of bishops educated at Jesus College, Oxford; notes on the founders and patrons of individual churches in Anglesey, extracted from Henry Rowland: Mona Antiqua Restaurata (Dublin, 1723); 'englynion' by Edwd. Lloyd [recte Lhuyd], Ashmolean Museum, with a Latin rendering by Tho[mas] Richards, rector of Llanfyllin; 'Cambriac Suspiria In Obitum desideratissimae Reginae Carolinae, dedicata Ad Isaacum Madoxs ... Episcopum Asaphensem' by Tho[mas] Richards, rector of Llanfyllin; etc. The section of the manuscript not in the hand of Rice Pierce contains notes on logic ('Physica non est scientia : Ergo fa[lleris]', etc.), extracts from Daemonology of James I, etc.

A manuscript, now in two volumes, containing transcripts of letters, 1732-1738, from the Rev. Griffith Jones, Llanddowror, to Madam Bridget Bevan (cf. NLW MS 6137D), followed by a copy of one letter, 24 September 1734, from (Sir) John Phillips, London to Mr [Griffith] Jones. A note at the beginning subscribed 'Tho. Charles' [i.e. the Rev. Thomas Charles of Bala] reads 'The Letters of the Rev. Griffith Jones Rector of Llandowror, Caermarthenshire, to Mrs Beavan of Laugharne. - They were copied faithfully from a Mss Book in Mrs Beavan's keeping, in which she caused all the letters to be transcribed, & were presented to me by the Rev. Mr Evans, curate of the aforesaid parish of Llandowror.' [i.e. the Rev. Thomas Evans (d. 1807)]. This manuscript contains one or two notes, dates, etc., in the autograph of the Thomas Evans, e.g. ff. 47 verso-53, 161 (pencil numbering) (cf. NLW MS 6137D, p. 363). It has been freely marked in pencil, probably by the Rev. Edward Morgan, Syston, editor of Letters of the Rev. Griffith Jones ... to Mrs Bevan (London, 1832). The exact relationship between the two transcripts in the National Library of Wales and a third formerly in the Carmarthen Museum and now in the Carmarthenshire County Record Office, Carmarthen, has yet to be established.

Vestry book of the parish of Llanrug, Caernarvonshire, 1774-1829, with a list of overseers of the poor, 1792-1831, and a record of the population of Llanrug taken 3 June 1811. Some of the entries are in the autograph of the Reverend Peter Bailey Williams, who was rector of Llanrug and Llanberis from 1792 until his death in 1836. There are a number of entries at the reverse end of the book also. Many of the pages are blank.

A holograph manuscript of Peter Bailey Williams containing annotated transcripts of 'awdlau', 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by Goronwy Owen; letters of Goronwy Owen, Lewis Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn'), and William Morris (printed in J. H. Davies (ed.): The Letters of Goronwy Owen (1723-1769) (Cardiff 1924), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris ... 1728-1765, vols I-II (Aberystwyth, 1907-09), etc.); lists of 'Modern Welsh Authors, [fl. 1590-1770] and '... Bards who flourished about 1280'; 'englynion' by Rhisiart Jones ('o Fôn) and an 'awdl' by 'Guttun Gwrecsam' ('sef John Edward, neu Sion Ceiriog'); and a list of 'Authors of Welsh Grammars'. There are some annotations by St George Armstrong Williams.

A collection of poetry almost entirely in free metres entitled 'Casgliad o Gerddi a Charolau ar amryw Destynau O waith amriw Feirdd Cymru'. The manuscript is in the hand of David Ellis, Cricieth, and was written around 1790-1. The poets represented are Arthur Jones ('Clochydd Llan Gadwaladr yn swydd Ddinbych') (1743-56), Morys Roberts (Bala), Huw Thomas (Llandderfel) (1729, 1752), David Ellis (1757-91), Huw Morys, Ellis Rowland (Harlech), William Wynne ('Person Llangynhafal') (1745), Richard Parry ('Athraw Ysgol yn Niwbwrch'), Ellis Cadwaladr (Edeirnion) (1718), Ellis ab Ellis ('Gweinidog Eglwys Rhos a Llan Dudno') (1683), Iolo ap Ieuan, Edward Morris, Edward Jones (Bodffari), Rhys Ellis ('o'r Waun'), David Jones otherwise 'Dafydd hir o Lanfair Talhaiarn', Griffith Edward, Morgan Llwyd (Maentwrog), Edward Samuel ('Person Llangarw gwyn'), and Evan Herbert ('Gweinidog Llan Illtud a Llan Fachreth'). At the end of the volume is a table of contents ('Cynwysiad y Caniadau') and an index of poets ('Enwau'r Prydyddion ...'). The spine is lettered 'David Ellis MS'.

A volume made up of fourteen letters, 1819-1851, from John Jones (Tegid or Ioan Tegid, 1792-1852), Oxford and later Nevern, to various correspondents. The details are as follows: six letters, 1819-1826, to the Rev. Thomas Richards, Berriew (the education of the addressee's brother and of E. Evans [probably 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'], a 'cywydd' on the death of Mrs Bosanquet, literary matters, adverse criticism from the bishop of Llandaff [William van Mildert] of a proof-sheet of the edition of the Welsh Prayer Book which the writer had undertaken to superintend); four letters, 1820-1824, to the Rev. David Richards, Llansilin (the education of the addressee's younger brother [Lewis], literary matters, the addressee's marriage, etc.); one letter, 1839, to Miss Angharad Lloyd [sic] (the Liber Landavensis is now in the press, he has completed his Welsh version of Isaiah direct from the Hebrew); one letter, 1846, to Owen Williams, Waenfawr (literary matters, criticism of the addressee's proposed 'Vocabulary'); one letter, 1851, to [Ebenezer Thomas] Eben Fardd (re. adjudicating the 'pryddestau' on 'Golygfa Moses &c'); and one letter, 1850, to the Rev. Richard Richards [Meifod] (he is glad to hear of the addressee's success, a proposed monument to Bishop William Morgan and the Rev. Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) at Llanrhaiadr yn Mochnant, plans for a commentary in Welsh on the Epistle to the Galatians etc.). Also included in the volume are extracts, 1845, from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh 'o'r Graienyn ger y Bala' ('Brawd Nain Ioan Tegid o du ei fam oedd Rowland Hugh'), transcripts of two letters, the originals of which are to be found in Peniarth MS 11, viz. a letter, 1847, from [John Jones] Tegid, Nevern to the Lady Charlotte E. Guest and a letter, 1860, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil to W. W. E. Wynne, Esq., and an outline of 'Tegid's Feet [shoes] drawn at the Vicarage Darowen at the request of ?M. D. Jones, Darowen, 1836'.

Inset at the end of the volume are transcripts of Montgomeryshire pedigrees, etc. Much of the material in the volume has been transcribed from other volumes now in the Cwrtmawr Collection (e.g. MSS 200, 222, 242 and 243) and there are references to such sources as 'un o lyfrau Maesglas Mallwyd' (transcribed in 1857) (p. 269), a manuscript in the hand of Robert Arthur (p. 342), 'Llyfr ym meddiant Lowri Jones' (p. 380), etc. A note pasted on the inside of the upper cover states 'This Vol. was copied by Owen Jones (brother of Myrddin Fardd) from a MS Vol. ... in the handwriting of Lewis Morris [Cwrtmawr MS 200] now at Bryntanad, Llanerfyl Montgomerys[hire] (Richards) E. Breese'. Owen Jones was for a short time a private tutor at BrynTanad (see The Dictionary of Welsh Biography). The spine is lettered 'Mannoethwy MSS'.

A volume (No. V) in the autograph of the Rev. Henry James Vincent (1799-1865), vicar of St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire. The greater part of the manuscript relates to the life and work of Griffith Jones, Llanddowror, and contains extracts from his diary and his letters to Madam Bevan. The remainder of the manuscript contains notes on Theophilus Evans, David Williams, founder of the Literary Fund, and Maurice Morgan and also a description, with particular reference to matters of historical and archaeological interest, of the Llanfyrnach, Clydey and Cilrhedyn area of Pembrokeshire.

Two composite volumes of transcripts of Welsh texts, with copious annotations, in the hand of W[illiam] H[enry] Mounsey. Mounsey Vol. II.'

A volume (No. VI) in the autograph of the Rev. Henry James Vincent (1799-1865), vicar of St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire. The manuscript contains a description of 'an archaeological tour', which commenced 'Monday Augt 25 1862', from Llantood to St Davids and back to Goodwick. Places visited or referred to include Eglwyswrw, Brynberian, Henry's Moat, Ambleston, Little Newcastle, St Dogwells, Letterston, Jordanston, Granston, St Nicholas, Trenewydd (Pencaer), Trefasser, Ffynnon Druidion, Mathry, Mesur y dorth, Waun beddau, Rhodiad, St Davids, Llanrian, Trevine, Trenewydd (Pencaer), Llanwnda and Goodwick. There are many references to and short descriptions of archaeological and historical sites. The descriptions are most detailed for the St Nicholas, Llanwnda and Pencaer area, with which the writer was familiar. He stayed twice at Trenewydd (Pencaer), 'the residence of my cousin John James, Esq.' and he refers to Trevelgare [?recte Trefelgarn] as 'the abode of my childhood'. He also recites anecdotes relating to the French landing at Pencerrig gwastad in 1797. There are interesting details also in his description of St Davids, which he compares with its condition when he first saw it in January 1810 and he gives also his earliest recollections of the buildings and of the grammar school in the cathedral. A large number of pages have been inserted into the description of the tour giving details concerning famous figures connected with various places on or near the route of the tour. Most of this material is derived from published sources but in some cases (e.g. the section relating to the Rev. Nathaniel Rowland) it includes personal reminiscences and information acquired from acquaintances. The following figures are referred to at some length: Owen Glendower (a lengthy description of his activities as Little Trefgarn in St Dogwells was 'supposed to have been the birthplace of the celebrated Owen Glendower', though the writer admits later 'That Glendower was born in Pembrokeshire is scarcely probable'; Joseph Harris (Gomer, 1773-1825), (from St Dogwells) (in this section the writer states his attitude towards the preservation of the Welsh language); the Rev. Nathaniel Rowland (1749-1831) (connected with Little Newcastle) (this section contains some personal reminiscences and information acquired from acquaintances and details relating to other members of the Rowland family); and the Rev. Howell Davies (1716-1770) (connected with Llysyfran). There are briefer references to Bartholomew Roberts (1682?-1722), the pirate, from Little Newcastle, the Rev. William Gambold (1672-1728) and John Gambold (1711-1771), the Moravian bishop. There is a longer note relating to Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815), which includes anecdotes which the writer had heard from a friend of Picton. The writer states that he had been promised a title for orders from St Nicholas but the incumbent had died before the writer had come of age and had been succeeded by the Rev. William Grey Hughes (?1792-1824). The writer gives his recollections of the Rev. William Grey Hughes and also details concerning his father the Rev. John Hughes (1760-1813) and his grandfather the Rev. Thomas Grey (1733-1810).

A number of miscellaneous press cuttings, including one or two book reviews. Among the subjects discussed are Thomas Stephens, Merthyr (obituary notice, etc.), 'Percy Bysshe Shelley - his life in Wales and Lynmouth', the diary of Morgan Williams, Tynycoed [NLW MS 14874], Theophilus Evans, The Welsh vocabulary of the Bangor district [Oxford, 1913] by O. H. Fynes-Clinton (review by 'Jmj'), and 'Cyhoeddiadau cyfnodol y Methodistiaid' (two articles by 'Ab Risiart').

A handsomely bound volume of manuscript entries and press cuttings entitled 'Catalogue of M.SS. and books of late Edw. Breese, F.S.A., Morva Lodge, Portmadoc'. Inset are a covering letter from Charles E. Breese, Portmadoc to J. H. Davies, [19]23, and a transcript by J. H. Davies from the Catalogue of a list made in 1879 of the Breese Manuscripts, with additional particulars of their dispersion and their then location.

A volume in the hand of J. H. Davies containing transcripts of Welsh poetry, mainly 'englynion', lists of the compositions of Welsh poets of the 14th-16th centuries (titles and first lines) and a few miscellaneous notes. Nearly all the contents are copied from Jesus College MSS lxxxviii, ci, cxxxviii, cxxxix (R.W.M., Vol. II, Part I, Jesus College MSS 18, 17, 16, 14); the main source of the poetry is Jesus College MSS lxxxviii. The first three pages contain extracts from Ashmolean 847. There is some material from printed sources, including a plan (p. 166) of the British encampments and the mines worked by the Ancient Britons between Rheidol and Dovey, probably copied from J. G. Williams: A short account of the British Encampments lying between the rivers Rheidol & Llyfnant ... (Aberystwyth, 1866).

A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.

A composite manuscript in several hands containing transcripts of warrants, 1678-83, relating to militia musters and payments and assessments in Merionethshire; legal precedents, 1689-1722 and undated, largely of Merionethshire provenance; an exposition on the Ten Commandments; etc.

A manuscript in the hand of Lewis Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn; 1701-65) based on a volume entitled 'Mysteria Kabalae Bardicae' and on other sources quoted by the scribe. There are a few entries by Peter Bailey Williams (1821), and also by St Geo[rge] Armstrong Williams, who has included a short biography of Lewis Morris.

A manuscript in the same hand as Cwrtmawr MS 15 containing a text entitled 'Llyfr prydferth o waith Vincentius ffranc monach ac offeiriad o ynys Lerin ynghweryl henafiaeth a gwirionedd y ffydd gatholic yn erbyn newyddiaeth pob heresi ... wedi ei gyfieithu o'r lladin ir iaith Gamberaec, heb newidio dim o synwyr a deall ei araith neu ei ymadrodd ... er mwyn denu ac annog y Cymru truain i ymgais, a chyrchu at yr hen ffydd gatholic eu henafiaid'. Following the title is a biographical note on the author, St Vincentius of Lerins, said to be 'O gatalog Gennadius', i.e. Illustrium virorum-catalogus of Gennadius Massiliensis. The translation, attributed to Hugh Owen (1575?-1642), Gwenynog, Llanfflewyn, Anglesey, is based on Vincentii Lirinensis ... pro Catholicae Fidei antiquitate et universitate, adversus profanas omnium Haereseon novationes. The translation is dated 1591, but J. H. Davies, in a note on the fly-leaf, suggests that this probably refers to an edition of the original work.
