Crwth a thelyn,

A composite collection of Welsh poetry and prose entitled 'Crwth a Thelyn. Y Rhan Gyntaf, sef y Crwth. Yr hwn Grwth a Aing ynddaw Swrn o Orchestawl Waith y Cynfeirdd, ac Ychydig o Farddoniaeth yr oes hon'. The collection was compiled by Hugh Jones, Esqr., of Talyllyn, and was begun by him about 1730. A manuscript in the hand of Lewis Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn; 1701-65) based on a volume entitled 'Mysteria Kabalae Bardicae' and on other sources quoted by the scribe. There are a few entries by Peter Bailey Williams (1821), and also by St Geo[rge] Armstrong Williams, who has included a short biography of Lewis Morris.

Triads, etc.

A manuscript in the hand of David Richards ('Dewi Silin') containing transcripts from Edward Williams ['Iolo Morganwg']: Poems, Lyric and Pastoral, Vol. II (London, 1794), pp. 217-37, of 'An Account of, and Extracts from The Welsh-Bardic Triades', 'Trioedd Braint a Defod', with an English translation entitled 'Institutional Triades', and 'Trioedd Barddas' (incomplete). Beginning at the end are an account of the city of Jerusalem ('History of the Roman Empire', vol. 2, p. 388), dissertations on 'The Resurrection' and on the Principles of Toleration, and extracts from the Salopian Journal, 24 August, 30 November 1825.

Transcripts by Mary Richards, etc.

A composite volume, comprising five exercise books and numerous pieces mounted therein, largely in the hand of Mary Richards, Darowen. Among the pieces mounted on the inside covers of the exercise books is A Card, Intended to be privately put into the hand of one that Swears, written (according to an accompanying note by Mary Richards) by the Reverend John Llwyd, vicar of Hindolveston, Norfolk, son of David Llwyd, Cymerau, Tal y Bont [Cardiganshire].

Manion Cof A Chadw, I-III,

(With 323B). Two of three composite volumes largely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing copious transcripts of prose and poetry texts and extracts from several manuscripts in the Llanover collection, e.g. 'Dafydd ab Gwilym', 'Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug', 'Pennillion diarhebol Iolo Morganwg', 'Pennillion Serch Gwasgar Iolo Morganwg', 'Dyriau Gwasgar', 'Darnau Defnyddion Doethineb Teuluaidd', 'Gwersi Doethineb', 'Gwasgaredd Doethineb', 'Silurian Phrases' 'Cyngor i Feirdd a Dysgedigion Cymru', 'Ffermyddiaeth', 'Arferion Morganwg', 'Trioedd y Llafurwr', 'Tywyddolion', etc. The transcripts of manuscripts at Llanover were made during the period 1880-2 but some annotations by the scribe are dated to 1892. According to a note at the end of the transcript, one transcript by H[ugh[ B[rython] H[ughes] was sent for publication in Yr Haul in 1874 (see Yr Haul, 1874, pp. 427-8). Medical prescriptions, etc.

A late eighteenth and early nineteenth century manuscript of Thomas Davies containing medical recipes and prescriptions, notes on the treatment of diseases and on the virtues of herbs, and a few miscellaneous notes and extracts. The contents have been taken for the most part from printed sources but a few isolated prescriptions are ascribed to Jno. Morgans, surgeon, of St Davids, 1808 (p. 346) and Mr [Thomas] Jones, Neuaddfawr [Lampeter, Cardiganshire] (pp. 349, 357). Among some extraneous matter in the volume are 'Trioedd Offeiriaid' in 'triban' metre by Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') (pp. 351-4) and a transcript of a Carmarthen Bank note, 1802. There is an incomplete index at the end of the volume.

Homiliau, barddoniaeth, etc.

An imperfect and badly mutilated volume containing sermons, some of which are transcribed from Edward James: Pregethau a osodwyd allan trwy awdurdod i'w darllein vmhob Eglwys blwyf ... (Llundain, 1606); proverbial sayings, triads and short tabular texts, many probably extracted from Robert Lloyd: Llwybr hyffordd yn cyfarwyddo yr anghyfarwydd i'r Nefoedd (Llundain, 1630) e.g. 'Wyth o arwyddion ansomedig o Iechydwrieth', '... arwyddion o ddamnadigaeth [sic] .... naw arwydd ... o golledigaeth dyn', 'Achosion seguryd ...', 'Naw o fariav i gav allan or nefoedd a naw porth i fyned i vffern', 'Naw ystyrieth buddiol', 'Geiriau gwir Taliesn [sic]', 'Attebion y seithwyr doethion yw gilydd ... ', '12 pwnc cas gyn dduw ar neb ai gwnelo', 'Pedwar peth a ddyle pob dyn i myfyrio ...', 'Naw arwydd o enaid holliach', 'Wyth arwydd St Peter o Iechvdwrieth', 'Saith o arwyddion difregusaf ag ansomedigaf [sic]', 'chwe pheth sydd gas gyn yr Arglwydd... A composite manuscript written largely c. 1564 by William Salesbury (?1520-?1584) of Plas Isa, Llanrwst, translator of the New Testament, containing 'cywyddau', 'englynion', and a few 'awdlau' by Jhon Kent, Gryff. Dwnn ap Oweyn Dwnn, Guto or Glyn, Tuder Alet, Hugh Arwystl, Dafydd Nantmor, Hugh Lleyn, Dauyd ap Gwilym, Wylyam Egwad, Roland Vychan, Rychard Ierwerth ('o Abertawey'), Gruffydd ap Ieuan (Ivan) ap Ll'yn, Will. Salesbur[y], Morgan ap Res, D'd Epyn[t], Thomas Vychan, and William Phylip, and anonymous and imperfect poems; 'Trioedd Cerdd' ('Tri bai cyffredin Cerdd davod', etc.); 'Trioedd Ynys Brytain'; miscellaneous triads; 'Pemp Brenhinlluyth [Cembery]'; 'Pemptheclluyth Gwynedd'; a deaf and dumb alphabet; and 'Dyledawl goffaduriaeth am enwae yr oll veirdd a mydrwyr eill [sic] or hen Vrytanieid a llawer o ein cyfoes'.

Trysorfa yr Awen ...,

A volume written almost entirely in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'; 1749-1817) containing poetry largely of his own composition, with some items by other poets. The volume is in two sections and there is a list of contents at the beginning covering pp. 1-145 in the first section. The wording on the title-page is 'Trysorfa yr Awen sef Casgliad o Ganiadau, Sion Lleyn, 1787,' but some of the items are of later date. The other poets represented are David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu o'r Eryri'), Robert Prich[ar]d (Robert Prichiard Sion,'Robin'r Aber'), T[h]om[a]s Edward[s] Nant, D. Edward, Lewis Morys, John Hughes ('pandy bach pentre ucha yn Lleyn'), Richard Powel, Evan Owens, Glan-yllynnay (Llanystumdwy), MrEfan Efans ('Bardd hir') [Ieuan Brydydd Hir], Evan Rich[ar]d (Bryncroes), [David Jones] Dafydd Sion Pierce ('Dafydd Brydydd hir'), Dafydd ap Sion, Owen Griffith, Hugh Lloed [sic] Cynfal, Goronwy Owen(s) ('Goronwy Ddu o Fôn'), Edmund Prys and Griffith Philip. One or two items (p. 2 in the first section and pp. 142-5 at the end of the volume) appear to be in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). One 'cywydd' in the volume (p. 118 in the first section) is headed 'Annerch Ieuan Bryncroes i Sion Lleyn wedi dyfod i ymweled a mi i Chappel Rhyd-y-Clafrdy pryd yr oeddwn yno yn cadw ysgol y fln 1791 y mis Medi' . The volume contains some notes in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), press cuttings and also a copy (printed) of Marwnad, neu Goffadwriaeth y Brawd Robert Roberts, o Sir Gaernarfon : yr hwn a ymadawodd â'r Byd hwn Tachwedd 28, 1802. Yn llawn 40 mlwydd Oed : wedi bod yn pregethu'r Efengyl 15 mlynedd. 8 pp. (Caernarfon : Argraphwyd gan T. Roberts, n.d.) by S. Lleyn. The remainder is in several hands of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. There are copious annotations by William Maurice and some additions and annotations by Cadwaladr Dafydd, Llanymowddwy (1747) and L[ewis] Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn', 1701-65).

An early eighteenth century miscellany, with later additions, containing recipes in English; a herbal in Welsh, with 'englynion' in praise of herbs by William Cynwall, Huw llun, Rhys Iorwerth fynglwyd, Gryffith ap Efan, Dr. Richard Dafis ('Esgob Dewi'), Sion ap Sion, Sion Tudur, Howel borthor ('o'r Trallwng yn mhowys'), Thomas Efans (1619), etc; 'Brenin yn yr hên amser a ddyfeisiodd i ddeuddeg oi wyr ddoydyd 12 gair gwir dan eu perigl'; 'gofyn a wnaeth y saith wyr doethion iw gilidd. Pa ryw ddaioni ore ar ddyn ...'; 'y pethau a berthyn ar wr'; Welsh proverbs; 'Dysg i adnabod y lleuad newydd', 'I gael y Pasc tros byth', 'I gael difieu cablyd', 'I gael y Pasc byth', 'I gael newid y lleuad', and 'I wybod oed y lleuad', 'Tair Sir ar ddeg o gymru au Trefydd au dinasoedd au Cymydau, au heglwysydd' ('Diwedd Ebrill 10. 1722'); 'Trioedd mab y Crinwas'; 'Triodd [sic] yr usuriwr'; the story of 'Adar Llwch Gwin'; 'y Pedair Camp ar hugain', etc. The leather cover is blind tooled 'Ex Dono Edvardi Humphrey Anno Domni 1661', but there is no evidence to show whether or not this inscription refers to the present volume.

Ffrwdfâl manuscript,

A notebook of William Davies (1805-59), Independent minister and schoolmaster of Froodvale (Ffrwdfâl), Cynwyl Gaeo, Carmarthenshire, etc. The volume is bound in brown paper and entitled on the upper cover: 'Liber Poeseos. Composed by Wm Davies at Carnsullom in Cornwall. Scriptum Feb 8th 1831'. With the exception of a series of five 'tribannau', without a title, all the poems are in English, and an indication of their general theme may be gathered from the following titles: 'Loss of friends', 'Creation', 'Providence', 'Goodness of God', 'The Benefit of the Gospel', 'Shortness of life', 'Sufferings of Christ', 'Death of Martyrs', 'The Bible', etc. Most of the poems are dated within the period 22 February 1831-21 August 1832 and the majority are likewise subscribed 'W. D.' or 'W. D. Fecit'. An entry on the inside upper cover reads as follows: '1831. I W. D. started from Loftycyff July 6th, was at Bristol July 9th, at Exeter July 13, at Coverack July 16th'.

A note on p. 221 states that 'Ieuan ap William ap dd: ap ejnws ajysgrivenodd yllyvr hwn i gyd ari gost ihvn i gael o bobyl ddifyrwch o hono alles yw heneidiav o hwn'; there are, however, a few pages (pp. 139-142, etc.) in other hands. There is a table of contents at the beginning in the hand of Richard Morris, 1784-1785, and another at the end by ?William Jones, who states that the manuscript was 'procured me by Mr. Holmes of the Tower'.
The dates appended to many of the subjects in the text show that the binder is responsible for the present derangement of the folios.

The folios of different manuscripts, or of one manuscript written by different hands at different times, have been mixed together in binding.

Poetry,

A manuscript in the hands of the Reverend Samuel Williams, Moses Williams, Iaco ab Dewi and others, containing one hundred and sixty-eight numbered items, mainly poetry, including about two hundred and thirty-five triads (item 13). The poets cited include Taliesin, Bleddyn Fardd, Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Siôn Cent and Siôn Phylip. Item 165 contains a genealogy of Welsh saints. Item 166 is a copy of cols 1165-1169 of the Red Book of Hergest. Item 167, which contains englynion, is in the hand of Edward Lhuyd, and was 'sent through the post to W. Baxter in Totnham Highcross near London'. Item 168 is a piece entitled 'A true Character ... of the Gentry within the Counties of Carmarthen, Pembroke and Cardigan during the Commonwealth'.
