Frances Stevenson Family Papers

The fonds comprises a substantial group of letters and papers, 1911-1972, acquired by Frances as private secretary to Lloyd George, including some business papers, notebooks of reminiscences and printed items. There are letters from a number of prominent politicians and public figures. There is also a small group of letters and papers, 1912-1965, concerning Lloyd George himself, papers, 1933-1946, relating to Jennifer Longford's schooldays, and a few papers relating to other members of the Stevenson family, notably Frances's sister Muriel and brother Paul. The material in sub-fonds G was loaned by Mrs Ruth Nixon of Camberwell to the National Library of Wales to be digitised in March 2013 and subsequently returned to her a few months later. Some of this material was subsequently purchased by NLW in 2017 and catalogued as sub-fonds H. The 2017 purchase includes various articles about Lloyd George, a draft memorandum partly in the hand of Lloyd George and partly in the hand of Frances Stevenson regarding the early part of the First World War, letters from Frances Stevenson to her family, including some from the Versailles Peace Conference, notes following Lloyd George's speeches and papers relating to Jennifer Longford including letters between her and Lloyd George.

The 1989 group (no's 1-13) comprises political papers of Lord Ogmore, 1957-1976, mainly relating to party organisation and policy formation, comprising correspondence and other papers concerning the Liberal Party and the Welsh Liberal Party, 1959-1974, Welsh affairs such as devolution, 1957-1976, the investiture of the Prince of Wales, 1969-1973, and various printed political pamphlets. The 2014 group (no's 14-66) comprises family and political papers, including letters to his parent from Penang, 1930-1934, Cabinet Office, Colonial Office and Commonwealth papers relating to various colonies, particularly Sarawak and Burma, 1947-1970, and the investiture of the prince of Wales, 1967-1973.

Papers, 1886-1968, of the Lloyd George family. The collection is comprised mainly of correspondence, the bulk of which is addressed to David Lloyd George, mostly from contemporary political figures and from members of his family. The political correspondence relates largely to Welsh affairs, including Disestablishment, the Welsh Church Commission, education and the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911, as well as to the Irish Question and the First World War. An additional group of records, 1904-1939, were received per Dr David Steeds comprising extensive files of correspondence, the minutes of the Association and its various committees and sub-committees, financial material, press cuttings and printed material. There are also many files deriving from the parliamentary general elections campaigns of the period 1906-29 in Montgomeryshire. There are also papers relating to the North Wales Liberal Federation, 1940-46, and the Liberal Federation of Wales, 1943-45. The records cover the period when David Davies, Llandinam (1880-1944) was the Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire, 1906-29, and the early years of its representation by his successor E. Clement Davies (1884-1962). This group remains uncatalogued.

The fonds consists of a disappointingly small group of miscellaneous papers accumulated by Dr Roderic Bowen during the course of his political career and public life. They include printed matter, 1901-1993, press cuttings, 1906-1992, speech notes, [1950]-[2000], letters, 1955-2001, and pocket diaries, 1985-2000. There are also files of papers relating to the work of the Committee of Inquiry on Bilingual Road Signs in 1972, which he chaired, and to the unsuccessful attempt to secure a knighthood for Dr Bowen in 2000-2001.

The second group, described here, comprises the personal political papers of the Rev. J. Roger Roberts. These include electoral ephemera, minutes, newspaper cuttings, reports and letters mostly relating to the Liberal Party / Liberal/SDP (Social Democratic Party) Alliance / Liberal Democratic Party, and in particular to the Liberal Party in the Conwy Constituency mainly between 1950 and 1999. The first group, donated in 1997, and described elsewhere, also contains some personal political papers relating to the Liberal Party, in particular to the Conwy Constituency, between 1946 and 1993. These include newsletters, leaflets, various publications, manifetstos, policy and constitutional papers, annual reports, newspaper cuttings, correspondence and minutes.
