= Material relating to busts of famous Welsh people commissioned from and created by John Meirion Morris, the subjects including the rugby player Ray Gravell (1951-2007), the naturalist, botanist, linguist, geographer and antiquarian Edward Lhuyd (1660-1709), the educator Ifor Owen, the monk and priest Saint John Roberts, the poet, antiquarian and collector Iolo Morganwg (Edward Williams), and the poets Dafydd ap Gwilym, R. S. Thomas, Gwenallt (D. Gwenallt Jones) and Waldo Williams. The material includes correspondence, draft drawings, estimates, photographs and photocopies of printed matter. The correspondents include the politician and barrister Elfyn Llwyd, the calligrapher, sculptor and teacher Ieuan Rees, and the nationalist academic and politician Edward (Tedi) Millward.

Aeth Jenkins a Bromwich ar daith tywys o amgylch yr ardal wythnos ynghynt; ganed Dafydd ap Gwilym, mae'n debyg, ym Mrogynin, Penrhyn-coch. = A letter, 22 August [1976x1979], from Rachel Bromwich, Bethesda, to Mr [David] Jenkins, [Penrhyn-coch, Cardiganshire], discussing certain places in northern Cardiganshire associated with the poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, in particular 'Melin y Prior' and 'Bwlch y Maen'. Jenkins had given Bromwich a tour of the area the previous week; Brogynin in Penrhyn-coch was Dafydd ap Gwilym's probable birthplace.

A negative photostat facsimile of Welsh MS. 2 in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, being an incomplete early eighteenth century collection of poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Sion Philip, Rhisiart Philip, Edmund Price [sic], William Cynwal, Evan Bry[dy]dd hir, Lewis Môn, Sion Cent, Tudyr Aled, David ap Gwillim [sic], David Nanmor [sic] and others. On p. 76 is a text of 'Brenin dlysau ynys Brydai[n]'. Later eighteenth century additions include a certificate of a declaration of an oath by Edd. Vaughan of Lanymowddy, Merioneth, 2 November, 1750, that a red heifer sold at Dinnas Mowddy and the herd from which it is taken are free from the infection now raging among horned cattle in the Kingdom.

Inset at the end of the volume are transcripts of Montgomeryshire pedigrees, etc. Much of the material in the volume has been transcribed from other volumes now in the Cwrtmawr Collection (e.g. MSS 200, 222, 242 and 243) and there are references to such sources as 'un o lyfrau Maesglas Mallwyd' (transcribed in 1857) (p. 269), a manuscript in the hand of Robert Arthur (p. 342), 'Llyfr ym meddiant Lowri Jones' (p. 380), etc. A note pasted on the inside of the upper cover states 'This Vol. was copied by Owen Jones (brother of Myrddin Fardd) from a MS Vol. ... in the handwriting of Lewis Morris [Cwrtmawr MS 200] now at Bryntanad, Llanerfyl Montgomerys[hire] (Richards) E. Breese'. Owen Jones was for a short time a private tutor at BrynTanad (see The Dictionary of Welsh Biography). The spine is lettered 'Mannoethwy MSS'.

A volume, [1813x1815] (watermark 1813), containing translations into English verse, probably by Sir John Bernard Bosanquet (see pencil note on f. 2), of Welsh poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym (ff. 4-5), Aneirin (ff. 6-7 verso), Taliesin (ff. 8-10), Gwalchmai ap Meilyr (ff. 11-13), Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr (f. 14 recto-verso) and Iolo Goch (ff. 16-17 verso).
Also included are notes on the poets and their works (ff. 20-30 verso) and an English translation of triads attributed to Catwg Ddoeth (ff. 18-19 verso). The volume is illustrated with six ink and wash sketches (ff. 3, 4, 5, 11, 17 verso, 26), including one of Cilgerran Castle, Pembrokeshire (f. 4). Frances Elizabeth Lewis (d. 1846), to whom the volume was given (see f. 2), was the sister of Mary Anne (d. 1819), wife of J. B. Bosanquet.

A manuscript volume, written in the year 1800 by William Owen [-Pughe], containing an English translation of the tale 'Peredur' which is sub-titled 'A Tale Of the Britons' with the Welsh text facing. The Welsh version is said on p. 234 to be transcribed from a manuscript in the hand of the poet Huw Llyn [i.e. BL Add. MS 14967, pp. 284-321], 'Adysgriviad o hen lyvyr wedi ei ysgrivenu gan Huw Llyn y Barz', but a note on page 60 suggests that the beginning of the tale was missing when the present manuscript was bound and that the transcriber added the missing part of the text on 21 Sept. 1827: 'Cyvysgrivwn odd y deçreu hyd yma, a oedd a'r goll pan rwymid y llyvr. D. Gwener, Medi 21. 1827. W. O. P. Segrwyd'. The following note appears on p. 235: 'Finished Dec. 31 1800, 9 o'clock at night - 3 hours before end of the 18th. century - Wm. Owen'. Written on the front fly-leaf is a medical recipe for 'Sore throat ulcerated' as well as the name 'W. Owen No. 40 Penton Street, Pentonville'. Pages 1-2 and 236-237 contain quotations from the works of medieval Welsh poets and the triads referring to Peredur with references to The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales ..., Vol. 1 (1801), and Barddoniaeth Dafydd ab Gwilym (1789).

In a note on the aforementioned 'title-page' (p. 199) Edward Williams claims to have transcribed this collection in 1799 from a manuscript in the possession of Siams Thomas of Maerdy Newydd, co. Glamorgan. Preceding and following the actual text of the collection are transcripts of a prefatory letter dated 1685 (pp. 201-06) and of the concluding note already referred to (p. 390) both of which are attributed to the Glamorgan scribe and copyist Thomas ab Iefan of Tre Bryn as compiler of the manuscript from which Edward Williams was allegedly copying (see TLLM, t. 172; IM, tt. 291-4). Pp. 391-477 contain a transcript of a collection, in alphabetical order, of over three thousand Welsh proverbs attributed to Cattwg Ddoeth ('Llyma Ddiarhebion Cattwg Ddoeth . . . sef yw hwnn Ail Lyfr y Gwyddfardd Cyvarwydd'). This collection, according to the aforementioned note at the end of the preceding section (p. 390) attributed to Thomas ab Iefan, had been compiled by the said Thomas from various sources and formed a continuation of the previous section. Edward Williams's claim with regard to the Siams Thomas volume is probably intended to apply to the contents of pp. 391-477 as well. The contents of pp. 199-390 have been published in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . ., vol. III (London, 1807), pp. 1-99.

An imperfect manuscript consisting of thirty folios of uniform size and two smaller leaves, with the two halves of ? the lower cover of an early nineteenth century periodical or part publication, which at one time seems to have served as a protective covering, bound in at the beginning. A considerable part of the original manuscript appears to have been lost as the volume was described by the Reverend John Williams ('Ab Ithel'), circa 1856, as containing 'about 100 pages' (see L. James: Hopkiniaid Morganwg . . . (Bangor, 1909), p. 91). The former protective cover bears the inscription 'Llyfr Llanfihangel Iorwerth. Cywyddau amrafaelion. Siôn Cent hyd Dafydd Hopcin o'r Coetty. Englynion Eiry Mynydd, &c.', in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'), and the contents consist of transcripts of Welsh verse mainly in strict metre. Dafydd Hopkin of Coety, co. Glamorgan is sometimes named as the copyist (see L. James: op. cit., p. 91; TLLM, tt. 229, 267; and IMCY, t. 139). Two poems by Dafydd Vaughan, 'Gwir gariad' and ['Camgymeriad'], have stanzas in English and Welsh alternately, the Welsh following the English. -- As so many of the poems in the manuscript are by Dafydd Vaughan he may possibly have been the scribe. The volume has annotations by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') who has designated it 'Llyfr Ystrad Alun' and who transcribed some poems from it - see NLW MS 1658.
