The file comprises two sheets of David Jones manuscript, a letter from René Hague to David Jones, and a letter to René Hague from Nicolete [Gray], 1978, relating to David Jones. There are also photocopies of letters from David Jones, many with illustrations, to Eric Gill, 1935-1938, and to René Hague, 1931-1946, with a typescript note by René Hague about the 'Puzzle sheet'.

The file includes correspondence about the Commentary mainly between René Hague and Christopher Skelton of the Skelton Press, with letters to René Hague from William Blissett and others, 1977. The file comprises a manuscript draft of an article about Eric Gill, possibly relating to one of the two articles published in Epoch and Artist on 'Eric Gill as Sculptor' and 'Eric Gill, an Appreciation', which were originally published in 1940 and 1941. Alternatively it may be for a radio broadcast by David Jones on Eric Gill produced by Douglas Cleverdon.

The file comprises manuscript drafts of letters from David Jones, many of which concern his published works. The addressees, which include Peter Orr and Sister Mary Ursula, are listed on the wrapper. There are drafts of letters concerning In Parenthesis, The Anathemata, Epoch and Artist and the 'fragments' published in The Sleeping Lord and other fragments. Other subjects include lettering for the cover of the Rutgers edition of Poetry and Prayer by Father Thomas Noon; biographical details (principally concerning the period 1921-1934); pictures by David Jones referred to in a letter from a Mr Witaker; Gwyn Williams's translations of Welsh poetry; Owen Glendower by J. C. Powys; together with an essay by Jeremy Hooker on The Anathemata and an article by him in the Winter 1970 number (vol. 6, no. 3) of Poetry Wales (there are drafts of four letters to Jeremy Hooker, one dated 20 October 1970) and suggestions that David Jones contribute an article to New Blackfriars on the general attitude implicit in his work and explicit in his occasional essays, and another to Encounter about Eric Gill (1966).

The file comprises manuscript drafts of letters to The Catholic Herald concerning the mutilation of Eric Gill's altarpiece in Westminster cathedral (one undated draft) and the nature of the worship due to crucifixes (drafts of complete letter, 1946).

The file comprises manuscript draft letters to The Times, Listener, The Tablet and the Catholic Herald, and to friends and associates relating to The Anathemata, The Wall, Abstract art, Eric Gill, religion and other subjects. There are letters to Desmond Chute, Sir Ifor Williams, William Hayward, Charles Edwards, and others.

'Liturgy'

The file comprises a typescript copy of a fairly lengthy essay entitled 'Liturgy' and consisting of a programme for 'restoring the celebration of the Mass as public worship'. The first page is headed 'Please return to E. G., High Wycombe, Bucks' but internal evidence suggests that Eric Gill is not the author.

The file comprises ten postcards to David Jones from Petra Gill and Denis Tegetmeier, 1925-1931, 1953-1957, with also a postcard to Petra Gill from Eric Gill, 2 postcards to Eric Gill, and a postcard to Desmond Chute.
