Papers, [1953]-1957, relating to the publication of Under Milk Wood, among them manuscript and typescript drafts, 1954, of Daniel Jones's Preface; a draft contents table, [1954]; typescript 'Notes on pronunciation', [1954]; an alternative typescript Preface by Daniel Jones, stamped 20 Dec[ember] 1957; a typescript list of amendments to the page proofs by Daniel Jones and Douglas Cleverdon; and two lists of emendations to the BBC script of UMW, [1953]x1954. The file also contains correspondence, 1954-1986, mainly addressed to Daniel Jones, with two replies by him, regarding Under Milk Wood, including the recording of the BBC production of the play, permission to use DJ's music, and royalties derived from the work.

Llewelyn Thomas,

An autograph letter, [1978], from Llewelyn Thomas to Daniel and Irene Jones, together with two postcards, 1998, from him addressed to Jeff Towns. Also included are press cuttings relating to Llewelyn Thomas, [1962]-2001; a copy of the Harvard University magazine, Gadfly, containing an article by him, 'Religion in Harvard', with related papers, 1959; and a xerox copy of his article published in the Australian newspaper, The Nation (October, 1971), 'On the impossibility of remembering father'.

Limerick,

Autograph pencil draft, [1930x1932], of an untitled limerick by Dylan Thomas about his friend Daniel Jones. Two lines at the beginning of the verse have been crossed out by the author; a selection of rhyming words are noted at the top of the page. 'Bridg[e?]' and 'Brigid' are inscribed in ink on the reverse.

Undated holograph letter, [1926x1928], written in pencil on a lined page torn from an exercise book (recto side only), from Dylan Thomas to Dan[iel Jones], requesting that the latter visits him to collaborate on a review and other work.

Letters,

Thirty-four unpublished autograph letters and cards, together with a telegram, 1947-1984, from Caitlin Thomas; among the recipients are Paul Ferris, Daniel Jones (with a draft reply by him), Mervyn Levy, Andrew Sinclair, Stuart Thomas, Ruthven Todd, and Gwen and Vernon Watkins. Also included is a handwritten and typescript copy of a letter, dated 16 December 1953, to George Reavey and Irene Rice Pereira, with a photograph of Caitlin and baby Colm; a typescript copy of a letter, 1954, to David [Higham]; and photocopies of two letters, 1951 and 1962, sent to Helen [McAlpine], held at the University of Texas. Personal matters are mainly discussed in these letters, and Caitlin's life and relationship with Dylan Thomas; several letters are written during the months following her husband's death, and some relate to the trial concerning ownership of the manuscript of 'Under Milk Wood'.

Twenty-three letters, copy letters and telegrams, 1953-1975, eighteen of which are to Stuart Thomas of D.O. Thomas & Co., relating mostly to Dylan Thomas's death and funeral arrangements and to Dylan Thomas Trust business.
The correspondents include Graeme [Finlay], November-December 1953 (ff. 1, 19), David Higham, November-December 1953 (ff. 2, 17, 20-23), [Nicolette] Devas, 18 November 1953 (f. 3, telegram), Louis MacNeice, November 1953 (ff. 4, 9), Margaret Taylor, 1 December 1953 (ff. 12-14), Dan[iel Jones], resigning as a trustee, 25 January 1955 (ff. 26-27), and Florence H. Thomas, August 1956 (ff. 28, 30). There are also letters from Oscar Williams to [I. W.] Ungoed-Thomas, 22 November 1953 (f. 8), and Donald A. Kershaw to David Higham, 7 October 1953 (f. 11), and a carbon copy letter from David Higham to Ruthven Todd, 28 December 1953 (ff. 24-25). A letter from Paul [Ferris], 8 September 1975 (f. 32), encloses a Xerox copy, [?1975], of the script for Stuart Thomas' tribute to Dylan Thomas, transmitted on the Home Service as 'Portrait of Dylan Thomas' on 11 December 1953 (ff. 33-47). Also included is a copy, December 1953, of the New York funeral directors' account (f. 16); a copy, 1965, of Dylan Thomas' death certificate (f. 31) and a programme for a production of Under Milk Wood in Swansea in September 1956 (ff. 48-51).

Also enclosed are copies of three letters from Dylan Thomas to Caitlin, [1936], John L[?], 1942, and John [?Arlott], [c. 1945], and a letter-poem about New Quay, dated 1945.

Florence Thomas,

Six autograph letters (one photocopy), [1953]-1957, from Dylan Thomas's mother, Florence ('Florrie') Thomas, to various recipients including Daniel Jones, J. Oliver Stephens and Vernon Watkins. They mainly relate to her bereavement, to Dylan, Caitlin and the grandchildren, and her health.

Thirty-five letters, 1944-1957, to the artists' model Mary Keene, comprising twenty-three from her friend Caitlin Thomas, 1945-1954 (ff. 1-30), six from the latter's sister Brigit Marnier, 1944-1949 (ff. 33-43), and six from Florence Thomas, mother of Dylan Thomas, 1954-1957 (ff. 44-53), all containing personal and family news.
Also included is a letter, 11 October 1950, to Caitlin Thomas from her domestic help, Dolly Long of Laugharne (ff. 31-32). There are numerous references to Dylan Thomas (ff. 1 verso-10 passim, 19, 20 27 verso) and his funeral (ff. 43-44) and to Caitlin (in addition to her own letters) (ff. 36 verso, 44-54 passim). There are also references to Laurie Lee (f. 16 verso), Anthony Devas (f. 23 verso), Louis MacNeice (f. 45 verso) and Daniel Jones (f. 47 verso).

Second Preface,

Typescript copy, 1974, (5 pp.) of a revised Preface by Daniel Jones for Under Milk Wood, together with proofs of the edition published in 1975 which comprises the first and second Prefaces (1954 and 1974); both typescript and proofs contain occasional corrections in his hand. Also included is related correspondence, 1974, between Daniel Jones and the publishers, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd.

Under Milk Wood trial,

Printed material, 1966-1969, mostly copies of newspapers and cuttings of articles, reporting the trial concerning ownership of the original manuscript of 'Under Milk Wood', including the judgement in the case (1967) and an Account of an action to recover the original manuscript (1969); together with additional papers, 1962-1966, relating to the trial, among them a copy of a statement, 1962, and preparatory notes by Daniel Jones, and a copy of a letter, 1962, from Ruthven Todd to Stuart Thomas.

The Era,

Manuscript, (11 pp.), of the first and only issue of 'The Era: a literary journal issued six times a year', vol. I, (January and February, [c. 1928]). An additional contents list is inserted between the folded second and third pages. Most is written in the hand of Daniel Jones; the signature of his co-editor, Dylan Thomas, appears four times. The Foreword by Jenkyn D. Jones, is signed by him; D. J. Thomas is also listed amongst the contributors. Dylan Thomas refers to his father and sister, Nancy, in his Editor's Notes.
