Inset at the end of the volume are transcripts of Montgomeryshire pedigrees, etc. Much of the material in the volume has been transcribed from other volumes now in the Cwrtmawr Collection (e.g. MSS 200, 222, 242 and 243) and there are references to such sources as 'un o lyfrau Maesglas Mallwyd' (transcribed in 1857) (p. 269), a manuscript in the hand of Robert Arthur (p. 342), 'Llyfr ym meddiant Lowri Jones' (p. 380), etc. A note pasted on the inside of the upper cover states 'This Vol. was copied by Owen Jones (brother of Myrddin Fardd) from a MS Vol. ... in the handwriting of Lewis Morris [Cwrtmawr MS 200] now at Bryntanad, Llanerfyl Montgomerys[hire] (Richards) E. Breese'. Owen Jones was for a short time a private tutor at BrynTanad (see The Dictionary of Welsh Biography). The spine is lettered 'Mannoethwy MSS'.

Barddoniaeth, etc.

A manuscript largely in the hand of Mary Richards, Darowen containing 'Llyma ddeall y pader ynghymraeg' ('o lawysgrifen ar femrwn cyn 1600'); 'Copi o Ramadeg Gymrae[g] rhai a ddywed Gramadeg Coronwy Owain y dechreu yn eisie'); 'cywyddau', 'englynion' and some 'penillion' by Robin ddu, Dafydd Gorllech, Guttun Owain ('Meredith ab Rhys medd eraill'), Sion Philip, Sypyn Cyfeiliog, Edmund Prys, William Philip, Howel Bedo, Owen Gryffudd, Edward Morys, Owen Robert, Hugh Morys, William Elias, Dafydd ap Gwilim, John Rogers, Ifan Tew Brydydd and Bedo Brwynllys, and anonymous poetry, the greater part of the poetry by Owen Gruffydd and copied 'o Lyfyr Owen Gruffydd'; there are later verses by 'Dewi ab Ioan', (Blaen Afon), David Charles [Carmarthen], Thomas Jones (Maes y Cerndi), J. The manuscript is in the form of two books, of which one was partly used, c. 1820, by 'J. H. M. L.' to record 'Adnotationes quaedam admodum miscellaniae', including a list of titles of Welsh airs, a list of Welsh expressions and their English equivalents and notes on the accidence of the Welsh language. Used as the upper end paper is a fragment of an 18th century answer of Christopher Welcker the elder, one of the defendants to the bill of complaint of Wm. Sherlock and Frances, his wife, and James Blundell and Mary, his wife, complainants.

A composite volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Walter Davies and Welsh Literature' by [Carl] Meyer (from The Times, 30 March, 1850, being the portions omitted in D. Silvan Evans: Gwaith Gwallter Mechain (Carmarthen and London, 1868), vol. III pp. 569-76); 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam (Gwilym) Lleyn ('Allan o Lawysgrifau Ieuan Lleyn - 1799'), transcribed at Llangïan, May 1854, with collations and annotations dated to 1856; 'Gwaith Beirdd Cymru. Amryw', being 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Sion Tudur, Tudur Aled, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ap Daf[ydd] ap Ieuan ap Rhys (Hywel Dafi), Richard Philip(s), Gwyrfyl Ferch Howel Vaughan (Gwerfyl Mechain), Ieuan Tew, Bedo Hafesb, Syr Robert Myltwn, Ieuan Brydydd Hir [Hen], Tudur Penllyn, Rhys Cain, Morys ab Howel ab Tudur, Gutto'r Glyn, Iolo Goch, Llywelyn Goch ap Meurig Hen ('o Nannau'), Huw Llwyd Cynfel and William Lleyn, with collations and annotations by D. A composite volume compiled by Owen Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr in 1857. It comprises: I. 'Y Gronfa' (pp. 1-200), largely in the hand of David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), containing an introduction ('Y Rhagymadrodd') signed 4 October 1790; an English translation by D[avid] T[homas] of two lines of poetry by Gwalchmai; 'Cyfieithiad o Awdl Sibli (Sibyl's Ode, translated by the Revd. Gor[onwy] Owen)' ('See the above, versified in D. Thomas's poetical collection'); etymons of Mr Jones of Llanegryn, Mr L. Morris, and D. Tho[ma]s; extracts from letters from the Revd. Written on the inside lower cover is a long note by O[wen] Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr, 1857, of which the following is an extract, - 'Myfi a gesglais gynhwysedd y llyfr hwn o'r hen ysgrifiau a ddaeth i'm dwylaw oeddynt eiddo Dafydd Ddu Eryri ac a delais am eu rhwymo yn nghyd megys y gwelir yma er's llawer o flynyddoedd yn ol ...'.

Darowen tithes; transcripts by Mary Richards; etc.

A volume originally used fairly extensively by Thomas Richards, Darowen as a rentroll of tithes set in the parish of Darowen, 1824-31. Beginning at the end, also in the hand of Thomas Richards, are a note from the Shrewsbury Chronicle, 1829, on the 'Rearing of Apple Trees'; medical, veterinary and household recipes; and accounts of receipts and disbursements (tithes, road rates, rents, etc.) of Thomas Richards, 1827-31. The remainder of the volume was used by Mary Richards, circa 1850-4, to record transcripts of a list of books in the library of Thomas Richards, Darowen; letters from Evan Richards to Thomas Richard[s], curate of Eglwys fach, near Dovy furnace, undated (religious meditations, a pocket Bible), Ch. Meyer, Llanrhaiadr [ym Mochnant], to T[homas] Richards, Llangynyw, undated (news of W. Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], an invitation to the recipient and Arthur [James] John[e]s), Thos Jones, L[eintwar]dine [aft. of Creaton], to Thos. Among the insets and items mounted on the inside covers are a letter from J. Topham to [ ], 1786 (Mr Stocks's donation); an undated petition by William Davies, late of Cemmes, Llanegrin, Merioneth for a charitable contribution from Price Jones, Cyfronydd (petitioner claims that Cemmes, now in Pryce Jones's possession, was previously the property of his own father John Davies); and Hirnant rent accounts between T[homas] Richards and Captain Gwynne, 1816-18. One of the sources quoted by Mary Richards is a manuscript of Sir Thomas Llwyd, 'Person Cemes, Sir Drefaldwyn'. The outside upper cover is inscribed '1825 Tithe Book'.

Gwaith Ieuan Lleyn, etc.

A composite volume written almost entirely in the autograph of Evan Prichard ('Ieuan Lleyn' or 'Bardd Bryncroes'; 1769-1832), with some additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). Preceding a number of blank pages are two letters from Ieuan Lleyn to Siôn Lleyn, the one undated (?copy), the other written in 1791 from Ty Mawr to Mr John Roberts at Rhyd y clafrdy, Lleyn, containing lines in the 'cywydd' metre by 'Ieuan Fardd Bryncroes' (another of the bardic names used by Ieuan Lleyn).
