The material includes forty-six letters (some of which are photocopies), 1980-1990, to Francis Llewellyn Powys from Bertram Rota Ltd, booksellers, London, together with three letters, 1984, and two undated drafts to Anthony Rota from Francis Llewellyn Powys; eight letters, 1972-1973, to Phyllis Playter from Michelmores, solicitors, Exeter and four letters, 1972, 1974, to Phyllis Playter from Wilfred T. Fry Ltd, taxation consultants, Exeter relating to the transfer of John Cowper Powys's literary copyright from Phyllis Playter to Francis Llewellyn Powys; three notebooks, [1980s-1990s], of Francis Llewellyn Powys containing draft letters, some of which are addressed to Gerald Pollinger of Laurence Pollinger Ltd, literary agents, London; a list of books in Alyse Gregory's library; etc.

The volume includes references to John Cowper Powys (f. 3 verso), Jon Dressel (ff. 5 verso-53 passim), Meic Stephens (ff. 13-41 passim, 47), R. S. Thomas (ff. 14 verso, 42, 51), Andrew Sachs (ff. 22, 23 verso-24, 34), Jacques Wirz (ff. 27-28, 48) and Gwynfor Evans (ff. 28 verso, 35 verso), as well as to the illness and death of Glyn Jones (ff. 9 verso-16 verso passim) and the disposition of his papers (ff. 17-47 passim). A few newspaper cuttings have been pasted into the volume (ff. 1, 7, 47).

Diary of Raymond Garlick, Blaenau Ffestiniog, for 1957, with two days to a page, containing entries for 27 December 1956-31 December 1957 (pp. 4-215), mostly concerning personal and family matters, his writing and broadcasting, teaching at Ffestiniog County School and his activities in the Catholic Church.
There are references throughout to Garlick's literary and other friends, most notably John Cowper Powys and his wife Phyllis Playter, including preparations for a radio broadcast on Powys in which Garlick participated (pp. 4-150 passim, 183, 186-187). Among the school pupils mentioned are Grey Evans (the actor), who, with his father, accompanied Garlick on an Easter trip to Rome (pp. 8, 44, 46, 67-72, 152), and former pupil Bruce [Griffiths] (p. 11). Incidents recounted include a row with the artist Frederick Konekamp (p. 45), and Dyfnallt Morgan winning the crown at the National Eisteddfod, with Aneirin Talfan [Davies]'s comments on the Gorsedd (p. 131). The family briefly took in as a lodger Susan Russell, Viscountess Amberley, the daughter of the poet Vachel Lindsay and estranged wife of Bertrand Russell's son (pp. 183-199 passim). The volume contains fair copies of parts of three poems, comprising the first verse of 'Monsignor Tudor' (p. 95), four verses of 'Therapy' (p. 101) and a prayer, 'Heart of Jesus, in you I place…' (p. 144); 'Monsignor Tudor' was collected in A Sense of Europe: Collected Poems 1954-1968 (Llandysul, 1968), p. 85. The volume also contains various cuttings, memoranda and accounts (pp. 1, 3, 125, 220-237 and inside back cover).

The letters contain references to the referendum on devolution in Wales (ff. 3, 4 verso), the death of Diana, Princess of Wales (ff. 3, 5 verso), Brenda Chamberlain (ff. 5, 25 verso-26), Jon Dressel (ff. 6-12 passim), R. S. Thomas (ff. 8 recto-verso, 11 verso, 12), John Cowper Powys (ff. 11, 36) and Andrew Sachs (f. 14). Garlick's letter dated 21 September 1997 (f. 3) is incomplete; the missing part is now NLW MS 23845D, f. 4.

Printed items, formerly owned by Frederick H. Davies, comprising pamphlets relating to John Cowper Powys, periodicals containing articles on him, and inscribed printed books including Powys's personal copy of Dante's Divina Commedia, 3 vols (London, 1924). Thomas (ff. 9 verso, 51 recto-verso) and to the death of Elwyn Davies (ff. 8, 32) and the illness and death of D. Tudor Bevan (ff. 25-46 passim, 62 verso). He also describes visits to Yorkshire, 9-14 April (ff. 15-16), and Tenerife, 5-21 September (ff. 36 verso-38 verso). A quote from Andrew Motion, Philip Larkin: A writer's life (London, 1993), p. 214, is on f. 61. A number of newspaper cuttings have been pasted into the volume, including ff. i verso, 62 recto-verso.

The volume contains drafts and fair copies of several poems, including thirteen stanzas of 'Blaenau Observed', the poem for radio, transmitted 14 June (ff. 36, 52 verso, 53 verso); the unfinished 'Octave of a sonnet on the Scourging of Our Lord' (f. 44 verso); the sonnets 'The Crowning with Thorns' (f. 45 verso), 'The October Risings' (f. 153) and 'The November Suppressions' (ff. 155 verso, 158); eleven stanzas of a poem concerning a pilgrimage to Lourdes (ff. 12 verso, 13 verso-14 verso); and a single verse (f. 56 verso). 'Blaenau Observed' was published as a pamphlet in 1956, reprinted by the Dock Leaves Press in 1957 and was included in A Sense of Europe: Collected Poems 1954-1968 (Llandysul, 1968); 'The November Suppressions' was published in The Welsh Nation, 10 November 1956, p. 1 (see cutting on f. 158).

Papers of and relating to the novelist John Cowper Powys (1872-1963) and other members of his family, including his correspondence with family, friends and associates, as well as published and unpublished literary works, diaries, lectures, essays, and material relating to his estate and literary executorship. Also included are correspondence and literary and personal papers of Powys's companion Phyllis Playter (1893-1982), as well as personal and estate papers of members of the Powys family including his father, Charles Francis Powys, his paternal grandfather, Littleton Charles Powys, his uncle, Littleton Alfred Powys, his aunts, the Johnson sisters, and his nephew, Francis Llewellyn Powys.

The file includes notes from letters written to Henry Lamb, [1912]-[1914], T. E. Lawrence, 1919-[1935], [D. S. ] MacColl, [1900]-[1945] (originals held at the Special Collections Library, Glasgow), Hugh and Michaela Pooley, 1914-[1917], Anthony Powell, 1928-1960, John Cowper Powys, 1955-1958, Michel Salaman, [1911]-[1955], Bernard Shaw, 1943-1944, and photocopies of typescript letters, 1944-1945, from Bernard Shaw, Theodore Spencer, 1929-1934, Lytton Strachey, 1913-1928, Sir Charles Tennyson and Lady Tennyson, 1944-1959, with background notes by him, and Dudley Tooth, 1928-1961.
