The file comprises manuscript drafts, letters and notes by David Jones including a letter to The Tablet about Desmond Chute, 1962; a list of addresses to whom cards are to be sent; an unpublished letter about The Anathemata to the Editor of the New Statesman; typescript and proof copy of David Jones' foreword to Arthur of Albion by R. W. Barber, 1961; comments about The Anathemata and In Parenthesis; two essays written by nuns; an unfinished article on 'The Welsh Aposolate'; galley proof of 'Liturgical Reform' in The Tablet, 1967; letter to Gwynfor Evans, 1966; letter relating to an honorary degree at the University of St Andrews, 1965; letter to Petra [Tegetmeier], 1931; letter to the editor of Poetry relating to proofs of 'The Wall', 1955; important items relating to the insurance value of The Anathemata in 1961 and to the numeration of the manuscripts; corrections to The Anathemata, manuscript drafts of In Parenthesis (pp. 203, 227, 278); a letter about Augustus John; and part of an essay on Eric Gill.

The file comprises manuscript draft letters to The Times, Listener and the Catholic Herald, relating to The Anathemata and its broadcast, Tryweryn, church art, abstract art, changes in the liturgy, A. S. Hartrick, Augustus John, and other subjects, and a draft preface to 'The Dream of Private Clitus'. There are also draft letters to friends and associates, such as Aneirin Talfan Davies, and J. E. Jones (Plaid Cymru secretary).

Printed material, 1953-1998, comprising mostly press cuttings of articles and obituaries about Caitlin Thomas, together with a postcard of Augustus John's portrait of her, and a copy of her funeral brochure, 1994.

Holograph letter, dated 7 January 1938, by Dylan Thomas to Keidrych [Rhys], sent from Blashford, in which he informs KR that Augustus John is trying to contact him regarding a portrait, expresses his own frustration at KR and the publication of Wales magazine, and enquires if KR is compiling a bibliography of his (DT) work.

Holograph letter, (2 ff.), dated 5 March 1945, by Dylan Thomas to Augustus [John], written in blue ink (ff. 1r, 2r) and sent from New Quay, thanking the latter for his gift and referring to Mary Keene who is staying at New Quay. Also included is a typescript copy, [1950x1970], of the letter; inscribed '511/?I/NPQ/72' and '214' in pencil in unidentified hands at the bottom of the page.

Carbon copies of letters sent to Frances in response to the proposal that a Lloyd George Memorial College might be established in North Wales. The file includes letters from Lord Beaverbrook, Aneurin Bevan, Robert Boothby, Sybil Thorndike Casson, Richard Crossman, Anthony Eden, James Griffiths, P. J. Grigg, Maurice Hankey, Augustus John, Harold J. Laski, Gilbert Murray, B. Seebohm Rowntree, Sir Archibald Sinclair (Lord Thurso), and Jan Smuts. All the writers agree to support the proposal. Some of the letter writers expand on their reasons for supporting the proposal and reflect on Lloyd George's life, career and contribution.

The fonds comprises the research papers of Michael Holroyd mainly relating to his biography of Augustus John originally published in 1974-1975, other editions and the revised edition published in 1996. These include letters from the John family, researchers, British and foreign repositories, photocopies of letters from Augustus John to his family, letters to fellow artists, his writer friends and members of the Gypsy Lore Society; reminiscences of friends and family; press cuttings relating to his works; papers relating to Augustus John's autobiography Chiaroscuro published in 1952, including publishing contracts; photocopies of writings by Augustus John; publishing agreements and book reviews of the biography. Also included are exhibition addresses on the artist by Michael Holroyd; scripts written about him and Gwen John by others, papers relating to the book co-written by Michael Holroyd and Malcolm Easton, The art of Augustus John (London, 1974), together with some research papers relating to Gwen John and to other projects.

Typescript drafts and proofs of Augustus John's first volume of memoirs, Chiaroscuro: Fragments of Autobiography (London: Jonathan Cape, 1952), [1950]-1951; working manuscripts, typescripts and editorial correspondence relating to the follow-up volume, published posthumously under the title Finishing Touches (London: Jonathan Cape, 1964), [1950x1952]-[early 1960s]; and other miscellaneous autobiographical fragments, [c. 1950], [?1959].

Some ninety-five letters, 1955-82, to Keidrych Rhys from various correspondents (surnames I-L), mainly in his capacity as editor of Wales and Welsh correspondent of The People, together with poems, short stories and essays submitted to him for publication. The correspondents and contributors include Augustus John (2) 1959, A. G. Prys-Jones (3, with three poems and an article) 1959, David Jones (1) 1959, Elisabeth Inglis-Jones (2) 1955-7, Glyn Jones (7) 1957-82, and Mervyn Levy (5) 1957-8.

Some one hundred and thirty letters, 1936-1938, to William Ronald Rees Jones (Keidrych Rhys) from over forty contributors and supporters, mostly covering issues 1-3 of 'Wales'. Some of the most notable correspondents are Roy Campbell (1), Idris Davies (6), Rhys Davies (6), Caradoc Evans (3), George Ewart Evans (5), Margiad Evans (3), Ll. Many of the letters are accompanied by manuscript and typescript drafts of poetry and prose, mostly published in 'Wales' nos 1 - 3 (1937). Also included are a few notes and press cuttings compiled by Keidrych Rhys.

Twenty-two letters, 1920-1925, from Gwen John, comprising one to her American patron, John Quinn, 18 December 1921 (ff. 48-50), and the remainder to his mistress, Jeanne Robert Foster, 1920-1925 (ff. 1-46), concerning personal matters and business; together with some eight letters from Foster to Quinn, 1920-1923, mainly relating to Gwen John (ff. 51-63, 67-95).
Also included is a photograph of Gwen John with Jeanne Robert Foster and Henri Pierre Roché in Paris, 1922, presented by Foster to Michael Holroyd in 1969 (f. 47); a typescript copy [?by Holroyd] of Foster's letter and notes on ff. 56-63 (ff. 64-65); and a related note from Foster to Holroyd, 3 April 1969 (f. 66).
