Radio scripts

The series comprises typescripts of radio lecture-recitals and talks by W. S. Gwynn Williams, entitled 'The Spirit of Welsh Music', 1925 and 1927, 'Nationality in Music', 1927, 'The Making of Music', 1927, 'The Music of Wales and the Eisteddfod', 1929, and a few related typescript programmes. Some of these were broadcast during the period he was in charge of Welsh programmes from the Irish stations at Dublin and Cork, 1928-1930.

'The Happy Wanderer'

The file comprises a manuscript copy of the music and words, in German, of 'The Happy Wanderer' ('Der Frohliche Wanderer!'), a translation of the song into English by Rosel Lang and a revised English version by W. S. Gwynn Williams.

The Mynshall Lute Book

The file comprises a letter, 20 Dec. 1917, from Robert Spencer to W. S. Gwynn Williams, enclosing a complementary copy of The Mynshall Lute Book with an introductory study by Robert Spencer (1975). A copy of the recipient's reply, 13 Jan. 1976, is also included.

The file comprises correspondence, 1929-1930, relating to the proposal by the National Council of Music of the University of Wales for the establishment of a Union of Welsh Music and Musicians and a new Welsh monthly magazine.

W. Pencerdd Williams Papers

The group comprises papers, [c. 1890]-[c. 1924], including talks/lectures, adjudications, musical exercises, material realting to the Tonic Solfa College examinations, and his application, 1895, for the post of Vocal Master at Llangollen, Ruabon and Wrexham Intermediate Schools; together with miscellaneous programmes, including an Eisteddfod programme, 1907, in which he adjudicated.

W. S. Gwynn Williams music manuscripts

The file comprises manuscripts of songs and compositions for piano or orchestra, composed or arranged by W. S. Gwynn Williams, 1908-1926. Many of the items have been published and include 'Arthur is Arising', 'Fairies', 'Longing', 'Palm Sunday Lullaby', 'The Silent Harp', 'Teach Me to Pray', 'Two Little Welsh Dances', 'Welsh Playbook', and full score and parts of 'Three Cymric Cameos'. A typescript copy, [?1917], of the libretto of 'A King's Dream', a musical comedy in three acts, is also included.

The fonds comprises mainly his professional papers, 1908-1976, a few personal papers, [1800x2001], and papers of his father, W. Pencerdd Williams, [c. 1890]-[c. 1924]. Papers relating to the Welsh Folk-Song Society and to his role as first musical director of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod are not included.
