A volume in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans containing extracts from manuscripts in the Llanover Collection.

A short grammar of the English language written in Welsh by 'Glasryw'. The title is wanting but the second part is described as 'Byr Rammadeg o'r Iaith Saesoneg. Yn fwy enwedig lle y gwahana hi oddiwrth Yr Iaith Gymreig'. There are sections dealing in turn with phonology, accidence, and syntax. The work was intended for competition and opens with an explanatory address to the adjudicators ('At y Barnwyr'). Beginning at the end, in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans, is an alphabetical list of Welsh synonyms ('Cyfystyron yr Iaith Gymraeg') and the names of subscribers to the writer's proposed A Dictionary of the Welsh Language [Carmarthen, 1887-1906].

An incomplete annotated transcript by Daniel Silvan Evans of 'Ystoria de Carolo Magno' from a transcript made by Ll[ywarch] Reynolds, Jesus College, Oxford, June 16, 1870, from the Red Book of Hergest (Jesus College MS 1, col. 381 ff.). The present text corresponds to Stephen J. Williams: Ystorya de Carolo Magno (Caerdydd, 1930), pp. 1-31.

A volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam Lleyn. The transcripts were made c. 1869 and appear to be taken from more than one source, e.g. a manuscript of Paul Panton, 1779, and a manuscript of W. H. Mounsey based on a manuscript in the hand of [Owen Jones] 'Owen Myfyr'. At the end are 'Tri o'r Chwe Englyn a ddywedir i Ddafydd ab Gwilym wneuthur ar ei Glaf-wely' transcribed by D. Silvan Evans from a manuscript in the hand of ?D[avid] Ellis [Cricieth]. Beginning at the end are three pages of notes on 'Matter'.

A note on page 406 refers to a transcript made by Thomas Miles ('Gwas Arglwyddes Llanover') for D. Silvan Evans in September 1882. A volume of 'cywyddau', etc. transcribed by W[illiam] H[enry] Mounsey in 1859 from manuscripts in the British Museum ('Barddoniaeth sef Casgliad O Waith Beirdd Cymru. Tynwyd allan y Casgiad hwn O Ysgriflyfrau yn yr Amgueddfa Brydeinig Genyf fi, Wiliam Henri Mounsey O Gaerliwelyd [sic] yn Sir Cwmberland. 1859'), together with annotations by D. Silvan Evans. The poets represented are Iolo Goch, Llywelyn Moel y Pantri, Gruffydd Gryg, Iorwerth Cyriog, Gutto'r Glyn, Iorwerth Vynglwyd, Lewis Morganwg, Sefnyn, Sippyn Cyfeiliog, Syr D[afydd] Trefor, Robin Ddu ('hynaf, o Fôn'), Rhys Goch Eryri, Doctor Sion Cent, Rhys Brydydd, Llawdden, Dafydd Nanmor, Dafydd ap Edmwnt, Guttyn Owain, Deio ap Ieuan Du, Llewelyn ap Guttyn, Gruffydd Hiraethog, William Cynwal, Sion Tudur, William Lleyn, Morus Kyffin, Mredydd ap Rhys, Robert Dai Llwyd and Sion Gruffudd ('o Llanddyfnan'). Among the illustrations and cut-outs mounted on the fly-leaves and in blank spaces in the manuscript are engravings of Montgomery Castle, the Fall of the Ogwen, Conway Tubular Bridge and Castle, Llyn Idwall, Rhaiadr Du near Tan y Bwlch, Moel y Gest, Denbigh, Snowden [sic] and Llanberis Lake, Valle Cruces Abbey and Pont Aberglaslyn. The spine is lettered 'Casgliad o Waith Beirdd Cymru. W. H. Mounsey. 1859'.

A volume entitled 'Telyn y Cyssegr. 1851', being a collection of hymns and religious poems, including translations, by D. Silvan Evans. Many of the compositions were published in D. Silvan Evans: Telyn Dyfi (Aberystwyth, 1898).

(I) Miscellanea of Morris Davies. Miscellaneous scraps accumulated by Morris Davies, Bangor, including manuscript hymns and cuttings from printed hymn books; verses (incomplete?) on the death of William Oliver, Dolgoed, Rhydfendigaid (died 1828), a short biography by Gwen Evans of Francis Evans (1830-76), printer, Pwllheli, and short notes on other Pwllheli printers; cuttings of press contributions by M[orris] D[avies] on hymnology; extracts from William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), etc. (Ii) Llythyrau Morris Davies, etc. Eleven letters, 1868-76, from Morris Davies, Upper Bangor to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans at Llan ym Mawddwy and Llanwrin. The letters relate almost entirely to bibliographical matters and there are references to the recipient's edition of William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), to the writer's study of hymnology and to his collection of the works of Daniel Rowland, Llangeithio. A mass of bibliographical notes, presumably enclosed with the letters, are bound in at the end of the volume. One of these notes is written on the dorse of a printed notice of a meeting of the committee of Bangor British School, 1855.

A composite volume of poetry in strict and free metre by various poets including Mabclaf ab Llywarch, Aneirin Gwawdrwydd [sic], Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), [Robert Williams] 'Robert ab Gwilym Ddu', [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', [Griffith Williams] 'Gyttun Peris', [Richard Jones] 'Gwyndaf Eryri', [William Edwards] 'Gwilym Padarn', [Owen Williams] 'Owain Gwyrfai', [Evan Prichard] 'Ieuan Lleyn', [David Thomas] 'D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri', John Davies and Michael Prichard. The contents also include a list headed 'The Names of some of the most Ancient Bards and Historians and the Time wherein [sic] they Flourished'. The lettering on the spine reads 'Llyfr Ieuan Lleyn, 1799' and the volume, except for the last five folios, appears to have been written between 1799 and 1822. The last four folios are partly in the hand of D. Silvan Evans and the folio immediately preceding them is probably earlier in date than 1799 and may belong to Cwrtmawr MS 513B, Part II.

A composite volume (256 pp.) probably put together by J. H. Davies containing material gathered by D. Silvan Evans for Gwaith y Parchedig Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), with some additional items (typescript) transcribed by 'T. H. J.' The printed volume appeared in 1876 (Caernarfon: Argraffedig gan H. Humphreys); however, the work had been in progress for a number of years. Pages 1-150 are almost entirely in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans and date from 1853 while pp. 151-226 contain transcripts made in 1861 by 'W. H. M. [i.e. Captain W. H. Mounsey, Carlisle, whose help Silvan Evans acknowledges in the preface to the printed volume]. A sheet addressed to 'Mr John Pryse, Bookseller, Llanidloes' (p. 144) and a possible reference to him by W. H. M[ounsey] (p. 165) suggest a connection between D. Silvan Evans and John Pryse. It is known from Pryse's reprint [1862] of Evan Evans, Some Specimens of the Poetry of the ancient Welsh Bards ..., p. [212] that he intended to publish a volume of 'The Welsh Works of Ieuan Prydydd Hir, (Barddoniaeth, Pregethau, a Llythyrau)' to be edited by 'one of the most eminent Welsh Literateurs'; however, the intention does not seem to have materialised. J. H. Davies has written at the end of the text 'All printed' [referring to the 1876 volume]; this is the case except for pp. 249-251.

A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. R.'], Conway to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans, 1882 (1) (an appeal - some friends are moving to reward the writer for his pioneer efforts to obtain Postal Reforms), J[oseph] Harris ['Gomer'], editor, Swansea to the Reverend Walter Davies, rector of Manavon, 1819 (1) (requesting a few communications for Seren Gomer), lines of verse in the autograph of John Ceiriog Hughes beginning 'Roedd Prydydd yn eistedd ei [sic] wrth ochor y tan ...', a (?) 'hir a thoddaid' and an 'englyn' by Ceiriog in memory of [Ebenezer Thomas] 'Eben Fardd', and a letter from J. C[eiriog] Hughes, Caersws to W. A. Swettenham, 1879 (permanent way materials on hand and wanted), a letter (incomplete) from [Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys')], Bangor to an unnamed correspondent, [18]78 (the addressee's request to have his letters returned), A. J. Johnes, Garthmyl, Welshpool to the Reverend R. Richards, Caerwys, 1836 (1) (the writer has recently been attacked for inaccuracy by the Dean of St Asaph - a request for information), H. Jones, Dinas and Pen rhiw'r kiln [i.e. Hugh Jones, Maesglasau] to the Reverend Mr Richards, Darowen, 1816-17 (2) (the writer's unhappy state and condition), W[illia]m Owen Pughe, London to Mr Ed. Jones, Minffordd Cottage, Tal y Llyn, 1812 (1) (is glad to hear the addressee has succeeded in procuring a boat for Llyn Cau) and to the Reverend Mr Richards, Llannevydd, 1819 (1) (arrangements for the Eisteddfod at Denbigh on October 6), and writing from Segrwyd, Denbigh to Miss [?A. Lloyd (erased)], 1827 (1) (replying to the addressee's letter), David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] D..., date wanting, to the Reverend John Jones, Rectory, Llanllyfni (damaged) (requesting the immediate return of John Owen of Ceidio's elegy composed and written by Goronwy Owen which the addressee has lent to Mr Richards of Llansilin, with a note from John Jones to the Reverend D. Richards), four bidding letters (David Lloyd and Gwen Saunders, Lampeter, 1807, Richard Dodd and Elizabeth Richards, Carmarthen, 1827, with a specimen of the handwriting of Alcwyn Caryni Evans when he was six years old, 1835, William Lewis and Eliza Thomas, Carmarthen, 1840, and Thomas Thomas and Eliza Evans, Carmarthen, 1848), A. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

A small notebook containing hymn stanzas partly in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans and partly in another hand [? that of John Henry (Silvan) Evans, son of D. Silvan Evans]. The hymns attributed to [Evan Pritchard] 'Ieuan Lleyn' are 'Nesau mae'r dydd - O ddedwydd wawr!' and 'Gweithredoedd Rhagluniaeth' ('Mor amlwg rhyfeddol weithredoedd ....'); in the case of the remainder the author's name is not given.

An incomplete copy in the author's hand of some of the items of verse contained in D. Silvan Evans, Telyn Dyvi (Aberystwyth, 1898). There are some minor differences between this and the printed copy.
