Manuscripts, [c. 1120]-[1942x1959], formerly part of the library of the Davies-Cooke family at Gwysaney, Mold, consisting mainly of family papers and manuscripts in Welsh or of Welsh interest.
The manuscripts include the Liber Landavensis (Book of Llandaff), [c. 1120]-[c. 1133]; volumes of Welsh pedigrees, [16 cent.], and Welsh poetry, [16 cent.]; Richard Davies's translation into Welsh of St Paul's Pastoral Epistles, [1546x1563]-[1567x1581]; a manuscript of the Brut in English, [1460x1479]; sermons, [17 cent.]-1811; inventories, catalogues and schedules relating to books, deeds and other property at Oulton, Owston, Llannerch and Gwysaney, 1750/1-1801; a travel journal of Bryan Cooke, 1790-1797, and journals of continental tours by Phillip Davies Cooke, 1815-1824; records of dues for the parish of Mold, 1581-1590; rentals and accounts of the Llannerch and Gwysaney estates, 1730-1843; surveys of the Llannerch and Gwysaney estates, [18 cent.]-[early 19 cent.]; valuations of part of the Gwysaney estate in Flintshire, 1809; pedigree rolls, 1604-1771, of the Davies, Puleston, Humphreys (of Bodelwyddan) and Meredith (of Allington) families; and several groups of letters, including transcripts and memoranda, and other papers, relating to the Puleston, Davies, Cooke, Davies-Cooke and other families, [1487x1503]-1901.

Pedigree and achievement of James ap Rhydderch of Laugharne, traced from Urien Rheged, with twenty-eight other coats of arms all emblazoned and painted, 'set forth by me Thomas Jones of Tregaron and finished at Fountayne Gate ... 1583'. Cites authorities, including the roll of 'Morgan Abbott' [?Morgan ap Rhys, abbot of Strata Florida in the 1440s] and the book of 'Hoell Moythee'.

Addresses, lectures and speeches, notes and other papers, 1900-1922, relating to politics, Welsh nationalism, education, rural housing, disestablishment, army recruiting and Sir Ellis's defeat as Liberal candidate for Anglesey; press cuttings, 1883-1926; biographical material, 1949-1954, including an incomplete typescript of a biography by E. Morgan Humphreys; and political letters from Ellis-Griffith, 1873-1926, and letters to him, 1878-1925.

Letters, 1881-1889, addressed by Thomas Edward Ellis from Cynlas, the House of Commons, and Cannes, to J. Gwynoro Davies; with holograph addresses by Thomas Edward Ellis on the occasion of the presentation to him of a national testimonial and on the Welsh Land Commission; and autograph entries by T. E. Ellis and Ellis Jones Griffith.

Twenty-nine letters, April-May 1896, discussing the proposed establishment of a Welsh (or Cymric) Institute as a meeting place for the Welsh in London. The letters are addressed to T. J. Evans as editor of the London Kelt (Celt Llundain), in which some were subsequently published.
The correspondents (listed on f. 59) include A. C. Humphreys-Owen (ff. 26-27), J. E. Morris (ff. 32-33), Sir Lewis Morris (ff. 34-35), Isambard Owen (ff. 36-37), J. Bryn Roberts (ff. 48-49), J. Herbert Roberts (f. 50), Sir John Williams (f. 55), W. Llewelyn Williams (ff. 56-58) and other prominent London Welshmen and Welsh MPs.

Papers, 1842-1955, relating to the historian Evan Roberts, Llandderfel, Merionethshire, including letters and postcards, 1921-1955, from a wide range of correspondents, including John Cowper Powys; unpublished manuscript works by various authors; lectures and articles by Evan Roberts; research notes; poor law rate book for the parish of Llandderfel, 1842-1845.

Archive relating to Elfyn Llwyd's activities as MP for Meirionydd Nant Conwy and Dwyfor Meirionydd and as a member of Plaid Cymru. the archive contains material relating to Parliamentary work including committee work and legislative scrutiny, local and national party arrangements, speeches and correspondence.

Travel journal, [late 1790s] (watermark 1796), of Richard Cust [stationer and gentleman naturalist, of Westminster and Carlisle], containing his 'Observations on the Picturesque Scenery of North Wales in the Autumn of the year 1783' (ff. 7-73 passim), together with thirteen monochrome wash watercolours of landscapes viewed (ff. 15, 16, 23, 25, 26, 28, 35, 41, 42, 46, 47, 49, 50). The journal primarily describes Cust's impressions of the scenery in terms of the ideals of the picturesque and the sublime; the entries are undated.
As explained in the introductory section (ff. 2-5) the Observations were transcribed by Cust from his original 1783 travel journal, with the illustrations being based on brief sketches. Cust and his unnamed companion(s) travelled by coach from London (f.7) to Llangollen (ff. 8 verso-9), then via Conwy (f. 10) and Bangor (f. 13) to Anglesey (ff. 13 verso-17 verso) and Caernarfon (ff. 19 recto-verso, 22 recto-verso). From there they went on excursions up Snowdon (ff. 24-34 passim) and to [Aberglaslyn] (ff. 34 recto-verso, 37-38) and Llanbenys [Llanberis] (ff. 39-40 verso, 43 recto-verso, 44 verso-51 passim, 54-55 verso), before returning to Conwy (ff. 57 recto-verso, 59-61 verso) and Llangollen (ff. 64-65 verso, 68-69, 70 verso, 72-73). There are descriptions of the castles at Caernarfon (ff. 19 recto-verso, 22 recto-verso), Dolbadarn (ff. 40 verso, 43, 55) and Conwy (ff. 57 recto-verso, 59-60); four of the watercolours also depict Dolbadarn Castle (ff. 41, 42, 46, 47), the others are mostly views of mountains and rocky outcrops. The narrative is incomplete and breaks off after a description of the River Dee at Llangollen (f. 73); additionally, eleven pages have been left blank to provide space for further illustrations (ff. 20, 21, 29, 32, 36, 53, 56, 58, 66, 67, 71, usually with indicative captions written in pencil on the otherwise blank versos).

A sample copy, [1929], of part of a projected printed book by Ezra Pound, to be called 'The Complete Works of Guido Cavalcanti', containing also four autograph poems and a prose fragment by Dylan Thomas, [1936]-[early 1940s], and two typescript poems by Vernon Watkins, [c. 1939]. Pound's book was intended for publication in 1929 but was abandoned, with only the first 56 pages printed, when the Aquila Press went bankrupt. The present volume appears to be a sample copy, of which two similar ones are recorded (see Donald Gallup, Ezra Pound: A Bibliography (Charlottesville, 1983), p. 153), consisting of the first two gatherings only (ff. 2-9) and filled out with blank leaves (ff. 10-74). The original Aquila Press fragments were later incorporated into the composite work Guido Cavalcanti Rime, ed. by Ezra Pound (Genoa, [1932]).
The Dylan Thomas poems are 'Then was my neophyte', [1936] (f. 11) (published in Twenty-five Poems (London, 1936), pp. 40-41), 'We lying by seasand', [1937x1939] (f. 74 verso) (first published in Poetry (Chicago), 49.4 (January 1937), 183, and collected in The Map of Love (London, 1939), p. 8), 'Paper and sticks', [early 1940s] (tipped in on f. 12) (first published in Seven, 6 (Autumn 1939), 6, and collected in Deaths and Entrances (London, 1946), p. 23), and 'Once below a time', [early 1940s] (tipped in on ff. 13-14) (first published in Life and Letters Today, 24.31 (March 1940), 274-275; see Collected Poems 1934-1952 (London, [1952]), pp. 132-133); the prose fragment (tipped in on f. 15) is the end of 'One Warm Saturday', [1938], the last story in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (London, 1940), pp. 253-254. The two Vernon Watkins poems, 'The windows', 1939, and 'A bronze head', [c. 1939], are apparently unpublished (tipped in on ff. 16-17). A dried leaf found loose within the volume has been placed in an archival sleeve.

Thirty-three autograph and typescript letters, 1935-40, from Dylan Thomas to the novelist, critic and broadcaster Desmond Hawkins, containing personal news and comments on his literary work, including a detailed response (ff. 25-9) to Hawkins's questions about poems included in The Map of Love (London, 1939). Two sketches pasted on to ff. 18 and 19 do not appear to be Thomas's work. The letters were published in Ferris, Paul (ed.): The Collected Letters of Dylan Thomas (London, 1985).

The volume includes a transcript of a letter from Lady Ann[e] Erskine to an unidentified recipient (pp. 2-30), a sermon (pp. 31-52) and a short narrative on Welsh preaching, including an example of a sermon by Christmas Evans (pp. 53-61), together with hymns and devotional poems (pp. 62-87) by the Rev. John Marriott (pp. 63-71), Hannah More (pp. 72-73), Bishop [George] Horne (pp. 74-75), T[homas] Moore (p. 82), [Joseph] Grigg (pp. 84-85), Mrs [Anne] Steele (p. 86) and [Thomas] Gibbons (p. 87) amongst others. The manuscript is probably associated with the Taylor family of Carmarthen, prominent local Methodists during the first quarter of the nineteenth century (see also NLW MS 13625A).
