Miscellanea,

Miscellaneous papers containing material in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume. The contents are extremely varied. The section now paginated 137-64 appears to have been originally a home-made booklet with the present pp. 137-8, 163-4 (bluish, rough paper) as covers. P. 137 is inscribed 'Catalogue of Books at London, May 20th 1794', and is followed (pp. 141-55) by a list of two hundred and sixty-seven books and (p. 157) a list of Welsh manuscripts including those described as 'Byrdew Trebryn' (? Llanover B. 1, now NLW MSS 13061-13062B), 'Barddoniaeth Sils ap Siôn' (? Llanover B. 6, now NLW MS 13068B), and 'Marchog Crwydrad' (? Llanover E. 1, now NLW MS 13163B) (As Edward Williams was in London during the period 1791-1795, if the identification of the three aforementioned manuscripts is correct, it is possible that the catalogue is of Williams's books and manuscripts). P. 165 is inscribed 'Hints for a short exposition of the Prophecies relating to Antichrist' and is followed (pp. 167-83) by a short theological exposition of ideas relating to the existence of a 'trinity of Antichristian Powers', viz. civil tyranny, ecclesiastical tyranny, and human philosophy, a conflict involving these powers, and the ultimate triumph of a ? Christian theocracy. Other items include pp. 23-8, a list of Welsh manuscripts and of Welsh and English books with the superscription 'Catalogue of the Books & MSS. in this Box, Jan. 24th 1802 sent 4 sets Walter's Dict'y for Mr. O. Jones 14 Nos. Do. Mr. Williams, Strand, viz. from 7 to 14 inclusive. Observations on the Weather By the Late Revd. W. Jones of Pluckley (Moore's Almanack improved, 1808)'; 185, 200, 244, 245, 247-8, transcripts of 'englynion' attributed to [Edward Williams] 'Iolo Morganwg', Simwnt Fychan, Ednyfed Fychan, Thos. Lln. 'o Regoes', Ddd. Edward 'o Fargam', Jonathan Hughes, and Morgan Llywelyn 'o Gastell Nedd'; 190-91, an incomplete list of bards and musicians licensed at the 'eisteddfod' held at Caerwys [co. Flint], extracted from [Thomas] Pennant: A Tour [in Wales]; 207-16, extracts from various books of the Old Testament under the superscription 'Jewish Apostacy'; 249, a list of the subjects in literary competitions at an 'eisteddfod' ('Testuna'r Alban Elfed ar fynydd y Garth, 1798'); 255, 263, 265-6, 268-72, ? accounts in connection with mason's work done for various people, 1796-1808; 258, a list of 'Glam[organ] idioms'; and 301, a list of 'Graddau carennydd'. Notes are found written on the verso or margins of a copy of a printed leaflet advertising a performance of 'King Henry 4th' to be given by the Young Gentlemen of Cardiff Academy in the town hall in Cardiff, 19 December 1806, copies of a printed leaflet containing proposals for publishing Edward Williams's two volumes of English verse Poems Lyric and Pastoral, and the cover of a copy of The Bee or Literary Weekly Intelligencer, vol. X, no. 5, 1792.

Englynion, etc.,

A small eighteenth century manuscript containing a few 'englynion', etc., by John Griffith 'o Landdyfnan yn Môn', Owen Gruffydd, J. Rhydderch, Griffith Lloyd, and anonymous authors, with two anecdotes in Welsh. The name 'L. Morris' occurs beneath the anecdotes and the manuscript appears to be for the most part in the hand of Lewis Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn').

Lewis Morris.

Poetry

An imperfect manuscript in several hands containing Welsh poetry, including the works of Tudur Aled, Siôn Brwynog, Simwnt Fychan and others.

Flyting poetry,

A manuscript containing flyting poetry exchanged between Archdeacon Edmwnd Prys and Wiliam Cynwal. Following the death of Wiliam Cynwal, Edmwnd Prys breaks off the exchange and composes an elegy to his erstwhile poetic rival (p. 177). Another elegy by Edmwnd Prys, to Siôn Phylip, occurs on p. 187. Richard Morris indexed the manuscript for W. Jones, Armiger, R.S.S., London, 1747 (see pp. iii-v). At p. 124 there is a copy of a letter from Edmwnd Prys to Wiliam Cynwal which refers to nine cywyddau of Wiliam Cynwal, of which a note on p. 93 of Peniarth MS 125 informs us the ninth was lost.
The extensive explanatory marginalia accompanying the compositions of Edmwnd Prys, coupled with the fact that the elegy to Siôn Phylip was evidently once folded and carried in the pocket, suggests that this manuscript may be a holograph once belonging to Edmwnd Prys. Much of the text of this manuscript, or one of the same archetype, was transcribed into Peniarth MS 125, though Peniarth MS 49 has four additional lines following 'Dôd i ddôl dedwdd Wiliam ...'.

Poetry,

A manuscript containing poetry of Siôn Cent, Siôn Mawddwy and others.

Poetry, feats, triads, &c.,

A manuscript containing poetry of Taliesin, Dafydd Ddu Hiraddug, Sion Tudur, Gruffudd ab yr Ynad Coch and others (pp. 1-52); the Twenty-four Feats (pp. 53-55); triads of the court of Arthur (pp. 56-57); carols (pp. 65-79); proverbs collected by Gruffudd Hiraethog (pp. 81-126); prayers (pp. 127-136); etc.
At p. 8 three triplets are written in the margin. For the estimated date of the manuscript see pp. 80, 132. The text at p. 127 differs greatly from that in the Book of Taliesin (see Peniarth MS 2).

Poetry,

A manuscript, written in the same hand as Llanstephan MSS 123-125, containing poetry, the poets cited including Taliesin, Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Lewis Glyn Cothi and Siôn Phylip. The first half of the cywydd at p. 35 is missing. The poems at pp. 37, 40, 43 were copied from imperfect originals and are full of lacunae. That which appears at p. 292 is apparently not the beginning of the poem as there is a page left blank between this and the previous poem. On pp. 633-646 is an index, with the poets' names arranged alphabetically, 'made by Richard Morris for Wm: Jones F.R.S. in London 1746.'

Richard Morris (index) and another.

Poetry,

A manuscript written after 1643 (see p. 199) containing poetry, the poets cited including Iolo Goch, Ieuan Tew Brydydd, Wiliam Cynwal, Lewis Menai and Siôn and Rhisiart Phylip. An index, with the poets' names arranged alphabetically, has been added at pp. 641-651 by Richard Morris 'i Wm: Jones F.R.S. yn llundain 1746'.
The original or originals of this manuscript were apparently often defective as many lacunae and imperfect lines occur: the beginning of the poem at p. 139 is wanting and the rest is very imperfect; the beginning of the poem at p. 181 is wanting as that which is noted as the first line here is in fact the 8th or 10th line; 'A chanoes ac ychwaneg a ranno dvw ir wen dêg' is added in a later hand on p. 316; an addition in the margin at p. 435 ends the poem with 'do'n ifanc ai i nefoedd'.

Richard Morris (index) and another.

Poetry, apocryphal gospels, &c.,

A manuscript containing poetry (pp. 5-18, 42-162), the poets cited including Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Guto'r Glyn, Siôn Cent and Iorwerth Fynglwyd; apocryphal gospels (pp. 21-31); 'y Discibl ar Athro', which includes a brief summary of the Elucidarium (pp. 32-35); &c.
The manuscript is in several hands, with a few later additions to the text. Pp. 5-15 l. 6, 77-99 l. 9, 115-122, 131-136, 161-162 are in the same hand. The manuscript is sewn into a piece of old parchment dated 1647. Poetic marginalia occur at pp. 13, 77, 81, 82, 83, 85, 87, 93, 97, 103, 131, 146, 151. The work beginning at p. 108 is in the autograph of Rhys Cain or that of his son, Siôn Cain. The work beginning at p. 112 is apparently in the autograph of Siôn Clywedog (cf. an autograph englyn by Siôn Clywedog in the margin of p. 127). The work beginning at p. 144 appears to be in the autograph of Lewys Dwnn - cf. a note in the same hand relating to the work beginning at p. 139.
