Llyfr Cerddi William Morgan,

A volume labelled 'Llyfr Cerddi William Morgan', being a collection largely of poetry compiled during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century by William Morgan (died 1728), Plassegwynio[n], Llanymawddwy, Merioneth. It contains 'Yr Eisteddfod ynghaerwys ... y 26 o fis May yn y nawfed flwyddyn o deyrnasiad y fre[n]hines Elizabeth ...' There are also copious additions on the blank pages and in the margins of the volume, including poetry by Cadwaladr ap Dewi and Dafudd Gryffydd ('ai Dychreuodd, John Llwyd ai diweddodd'); transcripts, 1721 and undated, of depositions and an incomplete lease touching properties in the township of Lowarch and in Lanerchvyda, Merioneth; undated accounts, e.g. 'Potatws a Count'; etc. There is an entry in the hand of 'Mair' [Richards, Darowen], 1853.

Llyfr John Morris,

A late eighteenth century collection of poetry in the hand of John Morris, Glan'r Afon containing 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'ymddiddanion', etc. in free metres and a few englynion by Hugh Morus, Edward Samuel ('Person Llan-garw Gwyn'), [David Jones] ('Dewi Fardd'), Richard Parry ('or Ddiserth'), Morys ap Robert ('o'r Bala'), Robert Evans ('o blwy Meifod'), Mr Robert Wynn ('Vicar Gwyddelwern'), Owen Gruffydd, Ellis Rowland (Harlech), Matthew Owen ('o Langar'), Mr W. Williams ('Person Llan Aelian yn Rhos'), 'Dai Seion' ('o Gaernarfon'), Mr William Williams [recte Wynn] ('o Langynhafal'), Sion Powel ('o Lansannan'), Edward Richard, [Walter Davies] ('Gwallter Mechain'), Jonathan Hughes, Edward Morris, Lewis Glyn Cothi and David Ellis. Preceding the text are 'englynion' by David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'], David Ellis, [David Jones] ('Dewi Fardd') and Evan Evans ['Ieuan Fardd'] ('Gweinidog Llanllechio' [recte Llanllechid]) and 'Awdl y Nef' by 'Ieuan Fardd ag Offeiriad'; a list of contents of the volume ('Testyn Caniadau'r Llyfr hwn'); an introduction by the scribe, dated at Glan'r Afon, 24 December 1793. The collection was begun probably in 1788.

Llyfr David Jones,

A collection of poetry, etc. largely in the hand of David Jones. Examples of the scribe's signatures in the manuscript are dated 1704 and 1708 and the volume may therefore be attributed approximately to this period. It comprises 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'Ymddiddanion' and a 'cywydd' by T. Ed[wards], Hugh Morris, Cad[wala]dr Roberts and Thomas Maurice, together with anonymous poems; a few medical recipes; a table, undated, of the phases of the moon; an account, undated, of monies received [in the Llansilin area]; and a presentment of Edward Jones and Roger Lewis, churchwardens of the parish of Llanarmon mynydd mawr, 1705.

Among the items mounted on the inside covers and fly-leaves are printed verses in memory of Mrs [Jane] Lewis, wife of R[oderick] Lewis, vicar of Llanbrynmair, 1828.

Poetry, etc.

A composite volume from the collection of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') written in several hands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and comprising ten main sections: (I) The first section (pp. 1-121 and some unnumbered items) contains poetry by Tomas Edwards Nant, S[ion] Owen, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn Eifion' [sic] and (mainly) Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu'), some possibly in his autograph. Other items include a list of books ('Catalek of all ye books that I Have'), some accounts headed 'Cost Capel garn talwyd' and 'heb Daly am Capel garn', observations entitled 'Lwybr Dyn neu Ysdyriaethau ar bedair rhan oes Dyn' by Robert Williams, a letter, 1845, from Ellis Owen, Cefn y Meusydd, to Mr Robert Williams, Bard, Bettws fawr, Llanystumdwy, containing verses by Robert ab Gwilym Ddu entitled 'Pererindod o'r Aipht i Ganaan; and a list of poems by ['Robert ap Gwilym Ddu']. There are also some press cuttings and other additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). (Ii) A memoir of David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') by and in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). (Iii) Miscellaneous items including 'Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd', poetry by Huw Llwyd Cynfal, Dafydd ap Sion and y Parchedig Mr Goronwy Owen o Fôn, and draft of a letter from 'Dyngarydd' [?David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') ] to Mr Gomer' [? for Seren Gomer ], and 'A Memorandum Book' in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') containing notes on natural history, etc. in English transcribed from various printed sources. (Iv) Notes in Welsh in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') on theological subjects including extracts from 'Patrick's Places' i.e. the work of Patrick Hamilton, followed by short accounts of Phoenicia, Palestine, Assyria, Babylon, etc. (V) An incomplete poem entitled 'Carol Plygain am Bwrcas Crist tros eu [sic] Ddyweddi ...... (Vi) Two items in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') entitled 'Cyfrifiad byr am amryw o enwau neu Sectau a ymddangosasant yn y byd' (? incomplete) and 'Ateb i rai holiadau, mewn Llythyr oddi wrth yr Ysgrifennydd at ei ewythr John Roberts', which last item includes observations by Michael Roberts on one of the questions. (Vii) This section consists of sixteen pages and one loose folio. The first fourteen pages are in the autograph of William Elias, c. 1731-44, and contain poetry by Evan ap Llywelyn Vychan (beginning wanting), D. Parry, William Elias, J. Rhydderch, Owen Griffiths and D[afydd] N[anmor]. The next two pages contain verses in English by Gr: Lloyd and the loose folio contains 'englynion', one by Moris ap Evan ap Dafydd ['Morus Dwyfech']. A note at the foot of p. 9 reads 'Oed ein harglwydd, pan dorwyd, y ffordd y mynydd Bwlch Derwin gynta, 1739, y rhan isa, ai gorphen: Mehefin 18: 1740: Wm Ellias, a Griffith Davidd o fodychen, overseers', and there is a recipe for making ink on p. 10. (Viii) 'Englynion' by Edward Charles and a number of Welsh hymns (author's name not given). (Ix) This section is in the autograph of John Roberts [?'Siôn Lleyn'], 1767, and contains poetry by Roger Thomley, Michel Prichiard, Sion Thomas Bod-edern, Gwen Arthur, William Elias, Owen Griffith, John Philip, John Roberts, Hugh Roberts, Thomas Jones, Rich[ar]d Parry niwbwrch, ? W. Ell... and John Rogar [sic]. (X) Veterinary and other recipes, mainly in Welsh.

Pp. 236-8 contain a first-line index to the poems on pp. 239-360. Pp. 399-546 are devoted to poems attributed to Siencin Lygad Rhawlin, Dafydd o'r Nant, Hopcin y Gweydd 'o Fargam', Thomas Llywelyn 'o Regoes', Syr Tomas Jones, ofleiriad Llandeilo Bertholeu, Syr Huw Dafydd 'o Gelli Gaer', Rhys Goch o Dir Iarll ab Rhiccert ab Einion ab Collwyn (twenty poems), Hopcin Twm Philip 'o'r Gelli Fid', Syr Siôn ap Morys, Siôn Lewys Richard 'o blwyf Llangrallo', ? A square slip of brown paper inscribed 'Hen Garolau a gasglwyd yng Ngwynedd' has been pasted on to p. 547 and this is followed on pp. 551-610 by a series of thirty numbered 'carolau' the majority unattributed and some attributed to Huw Dafydd, Thomas Evans, Syr Lewys ab Huw, Llywelyn ab Hywel ab Ieuan ab Gronw, Llywelyn ab Hwlcyn 'o Fôn', Dicc Hughes, R. Hughes, and Richard Hughes (? whether the last three named were the same person). Pp. 611-33 contain three poems two of which are attributed to Huw ap Wiliam ap Dd. ap Gronw and Siôn Morys.

Brithwaith Gwillim Pue, M. B.,

A manuscript written, 1674-1676, by Gwilym Pue [Puw], a member of the Roman Catholic family of Puw of Penrhyn Creuddyn, Caernarvonshire [D.W.B. (1959), p. 819] and containing a miscellany of verse and prose, much of it by Gwilym Pue himself. The title is given as 'Opera et Miscellania Domini Gwiliellmi Pue Cambrbrittanni M.B.' and 'Brithwaith Gwillim Pue M.B. Hefyd Gerdd yr un gwr a beirdd ereill Anno 1674: Pump o Garole Mr White, Hefyd Dau Garol o Fûchedd y Santes Gwenfrewy o waith Gwillim Pue 1674 M.B.,' and the volume is similar in content to, but not identical with, NLW MS 4710B, another volume written by Gwilym Pue but slightly later in date (1676). The contents following after 'Cyfrwyddiad y llyfr. Index libri' (to p. 648), a sketch of a harp ('Lyra' 'Telyn') and 'Trefn Cowair Telyn' are briefly as follows: pp. 1-44, 'Deongliad ar y Miserere', and pp. 45-61, 'Deongliad ar y Magnificat', two series of 'cywyddau' by Gwilym Pue; pp. 62-75, more 'cywyddau', by Gwilym Pue; pp. 76-196, 'Awdwley ag Englynnion', and also 'cywyddau' by Morgan Gwynn (Taliarys), Gwilym Pue, Thomas Williams, Edw. Canwyll y Cymry, &c.,

Canwyll y Cymry, carols and 'dyrïau', being compositions of the Reverend Rice Prichard, M.A. ('Yr Hen Ficer') (1579?-1644) (pp. 7-146), vicar of Llandovery, and others in the hand of William Salisbury, Bachymbyd. The manuscript was completed on 20th April 1637 (see pp. 148b, 327). The Reverend Prichard's works include a considerable number which seem never to have been published. Some of the poets whose works appear include Rhys Cain, Sion Tudur, Edmwnd Prys and Llywarch Hen. On p. 328 there is a note on the hot summer and early harvest of the year 1638, the harvest of 1637, and high winds in October 1638.
