Pedigree book, [mid 17 cent.], each page consisting of a printed arrangement of fifteen empty roundels and eight shields to accommodate four generations, together with a larger shield for an achievement; partially used to enter the Welsh ancestry of King James I, based on George Owen Harry, The Genealogy of ... James ... King of great Brittayne ... (London, 1604) (see p. 38). Apparently in the hand of Sylvanus Morgan (1620-1693) whose pedigree appears on p. 1, although a note by J. E. Oldfield (inside front cover) suggests the scribe to have been Peter Vaughan, sometime of Jesus College, Oxford.

There are notes from a bardic grammar, discussing the 'englyn unodl union' and the 'englyn unodl cyrch', on f. 30. Notes added here and there, in an eighteenth-century hand, give suggested floruit dates for the poets (e.g. f. 3: '1500 medd Thomas Richards'); these are taken from a list in Thomas Richards, Antiquae Linguae Britannicae Thesaurus... (Bristol, 1753).

An incomplete manuscript copy, in an unknown hand of the mid-seventeenth century, of Robert, Prior of Shrewsbury, The Admirable Life of Saint Wenefride..., translated from the Latin by I[ohn] F[alconer] ([Saint-Omer], 1635, STC 21102) (pp. 5-104).
The Life consists of two Books, the first comprising 22 Chapters, the second 16 Chapters; the surviving transcript consists of Book I from near the beginning of Chapter 7 to the beginning of Chapter 21 (pp. 5-68), Book II from the end of Chapter 3 to the beginning of Chapter 11 (pp. 69-100), and part of Book II, Chapter 16 (pp. 101-104). Based on the surviving original pagination, it is probable that the transcript was originally complete: there are approximately 20 leaves missing before p. 5 (original pagination p. [41]), and eight between p. 68 (p. 104) and p. 69 (p. 121); an unknown number are missing after p. 100 (p. [1]52), however only half of the final paragraph of Chapter 11 is lacking. Pages 1-4 and 105-108 are nineteenth-century fly-leaves.

(i) An autograph draft of Sir Thomas Hanmer's 'Garden Book' (ff. 7-87 verso), which appears to be an earlier draft than either Bettisfield 1667 or the 'MS volume of 1659' from which the 'Garden Book' was first printed with an introduction by E. S. Rohde in 1933. Its condensed style contrasts with the more detailed and formal text of the printed edition. It ends with an index of plants mentioned in the text (ff. 83-87 verso). (ii) A text of Edward Norgate's treatise 'An Exact and Compendious Discourse concerning the Art of Miniature or Limming ...' (ff. 89-116 verso), in the hand of Sir Thomas Hanmer, dated 15 February 1663/4. This text shows much variation from that of the only printed edition, based on Bodleian Tanner MS 326 [ed. Martin Hardie, 'Miniatura; or, the art of limning' (Oxford, 1919)]. Hanmer's abbreviated text ends at the foot of p. 70 of Hardie's edition. Hardie lists eight other manuscripts. (iii) Notes in Latin on Aristotle's 'Rhetorica' (ff. 2-6, and inverted text ff. 140 verso-141 verso); 'Notae Grammaticales' (inverted text ff. 137-138 verso); fragments of English prose, one beginning 'Freindsheep has this in it ...' (inverted text, inside back cover and f. 140); all in later hands of seventeenth century.

A volume of pedigrees in Welsh and English, evidently compiled in Carmarthenshire about 1663 (see f. 193). The collection is poorly organised. Carmarthenshire families predominate; Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire are well represented; some pedigrees for other parts of Wales. Mostly based on earlier sources, many on the pattern of achau'r mamau and in Welsh, many coming down to the years 1625-1628. Sources named are 'John Moythe's book' (ff. 117-124 passim) and 'Thomas Johnes of Fountaine Gate' (f. 120 verso). Folios 1-22 contain world chronology, biblical and royal lines, down to Charles II. Additions, mostly of Carmarthenshire interest, by several hands of XVII and XVIII cent., notably by an annotator active in 1706 and, it appears, by John Jones of Pant-glas (fl. 1706-1744) (see ff. 26 verso, 45 versoi, 184, 193).

Rent roll, 1666, of the manor of Neath Ultra and Cilybebyll, Glamorgan, arranged into free, customary and demense tenants. Also a memorandum of the heriot due on the death, alienation, 'incomb or releife' of a free tenant and the death of a customary tenant.

Young, 1632, STC 6347), with extensive annotations, [1632x1667], in the hand of Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt, comprising mostly additional Welsh words (ff. 9-66 passim) and proverbs (ff. 191-195 passim).

Pedigree (ff. 1-4) and achievement (f. 4), [1664x1673], of George Gwynne of Llwyn Hywel, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, and Llanelwedd, Radnorshire, with one hundred and nineteen other coats of arms, all emblazoned and painted, probably compiled by David Edwardes, Rhyd-y-gors, Carmarthenshire.
The pedigree is traced, sometimes spuriously, from Gwyriad (fl. c. 800), father of Merfyn Frych (f. 1), Coronac, King of Dublin (4 cent.), Caradog Freichfras, earl of Hereford (?6 cent.), Drew de Ballon, 'baron of Abergavenny' (11 cent.), Drym[benog] ap Maenyrch (fl. c. 1100), and Gwrydr Hir (?10 cent.), of Dryslwyn (all f. 2).

A volume, [17 cent., third ¼], containing manuscript copies, in an unknown hand, of at least fifty-five sermons of the Rev. Joseph Caryl, preached April 1650-May 1653, all on the Epistle to the Romans 8:9-28.
Parts of the text are accompanied by copious marginal annotations (pp. 1-125, 188-192, 213-216, 241-250, 273-278, 339-351, 372-373, 700-707, 716-727), the remainder is only very sporadically annotated. Marginal notes by the transcriber and gaps left by him (pp. 193-200, 216a-h, 446-448, 549-556, 585-588, 600-604, 629-636, 661-668, 708-712, 784-788, 861-864 and 905 onward) attest to at least twelve missing sermons. Also included are proof sheets (2 copies), [19 cent.], apparently for p. 27 of an edition of the text, corresponding almost exactly to p. 27 of the manuscript; no edition is known to have been published (tipped in on pp. 909, 911).

Pedigree and achievement, 1654, of John Edwards (1619-1673) of Stanste [Stansty], Denbighshire, compiled and executed by Randle Holme II, containing forty fully painted coats of arms (including the achievement), mostly impaled, tracing Edwards's descent in the male line from Coel Godebog and Cadwalader ap Cadwallon, through their mutual descendant Rhodri Mawr, alongside his paternal grandmother's descent from Morion ap Morgenew, Lord of Dyffryn Clwyd.
The names of individuals, together with additional biographical and genealogical information, are enclosed in roundels, with those of the earliest royal and noble figures being surmounted by crowns, coronets or caps of maintenance as appropriate. The pedigree is mostly arranged as two parallel lines of descent, except the final three generations where other relatives such as siblings and John Edwards's son and stepchildren are recorded, without heraldry. The title, beginning 'The Genealogie or Pedegree of John Edwards of Stanste', is given in a scroll cartouche at the head of the roll; the achievement of John Edwards, with eleven quarterings, is placed at the foot. There are a few additions in a different hand, [?1670s], including notice of the marriage of John Edwards the younger (aged 2 in 1654) to Mary, daughter of the Rev. Robert Lloyd of Llanychan; two sections of text appear to have been altered by scraping away the original ink. The pedigree is an example of Style 3 in Michael Powell Siddons, Welsh Pedigree Rolls (Aberystwyth, 1996), pp. 11-12.

A pedigree, 1680, of the Kerry family of Binweston, Worthen, Shropshire, containing twenty-five coats of arms, all emblazoned and painted. It is a copy, with continuation, apparently by Thomas Fr[ancis, of Montgomery], from a Lewys Dwnn original of 1598. The pedigree is traced from Gwrgene, Lord of Yal and Bromfield [?Gwernen ap Gwaeddgar], Llyr ap Maenyrch, King of Gloster [Llyr Marini], and King Pelenaur [Pellinore or Pelinor], as well as Cadell ap Rhodri Mawr and Severus [ap Cadwr Wynwyn].
Comparison with NLW MS 23219G, a 1792 copy of the pedigree, suggests that the present roll was created as the pedigree and achievement of Edward Kerry (d. c. 1698) of Binweston, the original achievement now having been lost from the foot of the roll. Several arms originally emblazoned 'or, a lion rampant regardant gules, armed and langued azure' seem subsequently to have been over-painted 'party per saltire, azure and ermine' (NLW MS 23219G shows the latter arms); all the arms have suffered from the loss of pigment.

Cause book, 1659-87, of John Maddocks (1601-62), Bodfari, co. Flint, containing lists of the civil cases heard on the Chester and North Wales circuits of the Great Sessions in Wales, April 1659 - October 1661 and October 1659 - September 1661 respectively, in which he appeared as an advocate (ff. 2-36; 170-84 verso inverted text); two civil cases heard in the Great Sessions for co. Denbigh, August 1666, are listed in another hand on f. 37. The volume was later used by another scribe (the entry on f. 156 verso is in another hand who also added memoranda on f. 186 verso) to copy extracts from the court book of the bishop of Bangor's manors of Llan, Llech and Llanelidan, co. Denbigh, for sessions held May 1683 - November 1687 before John Maddocks, steward, probably the advocate's son (ff. 156 verso-68 verso inverted text). Other items comprise legal and financial memoranda, including a list, 1662, in the hand of Edward Wynne of bonds delivered by him (f. 185 recto-verso inverted text).

A collection of printed Votes of the House of Commons, 21 October 1680-10 January 1681 (ff. 26-100), and 21-28 March 1681 (ff. 130-136), together with other printed parliamentary acts, speeches, and proclamation, all kept and some annotated by William Williams, Speaker of the House of Commons, and MP for Chester.
Significant manuscript additions by Williams include notes on his election as Speaker on 21-22 October 1680 (ff. 21-23), on the sudden dissolution of the Oxford Parliament on 28 March 1681 (ff. 137), and on his later career, 1687-1694 (f. 138). Corrections on the printed papers in the Speaker's hand appear on ff. 48, 50, 56, 87, 93, 126-8, 131.

Five manuscripts formerly in the Duke of Newcastle's library at Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, comprising genealogies of North Wales families; texts from the Alexander cycle and the Historia Regum Britanniae of Geoffrey of Monmouth; a transcript of Rice Merrick's 'Morganiae Archaiographia'; and volumes in the hands of John Prise of Brecon and Hereford, grandson of Sir John Prise (1502?-1555), and of Thomas Prise, Wistaston, Herefordshire, probably grandson of the former.

Two poems by Dafydd Vaughan, 'Gwir gariad' and ['Camgymeriad'], have stanzas in English and Welsh alternately, the Welsh following the English. -- As so many of the poems in the manuscript are by Dafydd Vaughan he may possibly have been the scribe. The volume has annotations by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') who has designated it 'Llyfr Ystrad Alun' and who transcribed some poems from it - see NLW MS 1658.

A pedigree, [17 cent, last ¼], of Hugh Jones of Bottegir [Bodtegir], [Betws Gwerful Goch, Denbighshire], reciting his paternal ancestors back to Adam. This may be the Hugh Jones buried at Betws Gwerful Goch on 2 January 1716.
The pedigree is said to be based on the work of Gutun Owain ('Thus by Gyttyn Owens booke who flourished in King Henry the seaven his time'); the earlier portions, listing mythical and legendary kings of Britain (after Geoffrey of Monmouth), the descendants of Brutus and Eneas Ysgwyddwyn [Aeneas], figures from Roman mythology and the Biblical Patriarchs from Noah to Adam, closely mirrors Gutun Owain's genealogical text in NLW MS 3026C, pp. 63-81. More recent generations consist of mostly genuine rulers of Powys, descended from Kasnar Waledig [Casnar Wledig]. The pedigree is not recorded in Michael Powell Siddons, Welsh Pedigree Rolls (Aberystwyth, 1996).

A volume, [17 cent., second ½] (watermark similar to Churchill 401), containing Scriptural genealogies (ff. 2-68) and the 'Onomasticon', a dictionary of individuals and peoples mentioned in the Bible (ff. 70-316 verso), both compiled by a certain William Spenser, gent.
The genealogies show the descent of Jesus Christ from Adam and Eve but also include pedigrees for the Twelve Tribes of Israel (ff. 8-31 verso); other peoples and empires appearing in the Old and New Testaments are represented by genealogies or by lists of individuals as appropriate (ff. 33-68); the section on the Roman Empire lists other figures appearing in the New Testament (ff. 57-68). As well as the Bible the compiler has made use of other sources including Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews (see ff. 138 verso, 161 verso, 187 verso, 195, 245); there are also extracts from Thomas Godwyn [Goodwin], Moses and Aaron: Civil and Ecclesiastical Rites Used by the Ancient Hebrewes (London: printed by Iohn Haviland, 1625, STC 11951), pp. 58-60 (f. 261 verso), 61-66 (f. 127 verso). The preface (ff. 2 recto-verso) consists mainly of excerpts from Works of the Great Albionean Divine Mr Hugh Broughton, ed. by John Lightfoot (London: printed for Nath. Ekins, 1662, Wing B4997), pp. 376 (2nd Tome), 689 (3rd tome). Many names and headings are picked out in red ink, with names of prophets in green ink. Various additions and marginal notes have been added to the Onomasticon in the same hand.

Copies of the Queen's instructions to Henry, Earl of Pembroke, Lord President of the Council in Wales and the Marches, 1586; the commission of the lieutenancy of Wales and the Marches to Henry, Earl of Pembroke, March 22, 1600, with power to make deputations to persons named in the commission for the different counties within the lieutenancy; a petition by six members of the Privy Council to the Lord Keeper to renew the commission of lieutenancy for Merioneth and to leave out the names of John Lewys Owen and Cadwalader ap Ris, who had been arraigned before the Court of Star Chamber for misdemeanours, and to appoint Griffith Vaughan and Robert Lloyd to be deputies for the Earl of Pembroke for that county; a Privy Council letter to the same effect covering a renewed commission to the Earl of Pembroke, March 31, 1600, with a list of justices of the peace for Merioneth; and orders for the reformation of the Court of the Marches, 1577.

'Alphabet of Pedegres of diverse kings, dukes, marques, erles, vicounts, barons, knights, squires and gentlemen of Englande, ffraunce, Ireland, Scotland and wales', compiled by A. Lewis, with an index in a later hand. The compiler refers to several well-known authorities, including 'Thomas Joones de Tregaron generosus'.

A composite manuscript volume lettered on the spine 'MSS. Collections Relative to Wales, II', being a companion volume to, and a continuation of, NLW MS 6209E, which is also a composite manuscript (sections numbered I-XIII) bound in a similar manner and lettered on the spine 'MSS. Collections Relative to Wales, I'. It appears that the two volumes originally formed one folio manuscript belonging to Edward Lhuyd made up of transcripts by his assistants, contributions by Henry Rowlands and Hugh Thomas, and fragments of earlier manuscripts (see pp. 14-15 of NLW MS 13918F, 'Catalogue of Welsh M.S.S. in Beechwood Library by the Reverend Mr John Jones [?1746-1827] M.A. Fellow of Jesus College Oxon, 1781', i.e. part of the Sebright collection. The contents include: pp. 1-38 (XIV), a copy of [George Owen's] 'Treatise of Lordshipps Marchers in Wales . . .' from a 'MS. Borrowed of Mr. Will.
