Davies [i.e. the Cwrtmawr collection of deeds now in the National Library of Wales and described in detail in a typewritten catalogue (1956)] relating to the families of 'Saunders of Pendine, Vaughan of Jordanston, Warren of Trewern, Allen of Cresselly, Philipps of Trellewellin (Manerawen), Price of Pendine, Williams of Dolgwm, Lewis of Llanveyney (Llangurig), Nelthorpe of Carmarthen, Shorter of London, Owen of Orielton, Lloyd of Peterwell, Powell of Mydrim, Wilkin of Lanrian, Higgon of Spittle, Williams of Pencarreg, Stedman of Strata Florida, Lewis of Llysnewydd and Herbert of Llanvihangel y Croythin', and of deeds and documents, sixteenth to seventeenth century, from the same collection relating to properties in Cardiganshire.

A scrap-book belonging to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing notes and press cuttings relating to churches and parishes, etc. in Llŷn and Eifionydd, Caernarvonshire, with a few references to places outside that area, e.g. Abergwili, Carmarthenshire and Brongwyn, Cardiganshire. At the reverse end are copies of memorial inscriptions, a note on 'Ffordd Maughan', transcripts of two letters, 1860, from [Ebenezer Thomas], 'Eben Vardd', Clynnog to Mr John Roberts [?Sion Lleyn], and brief notes on mansions in Llŷn and Eifionydd, etc. Letter (?) 'I' on spine.

A manuscript containing a transcript of the text of 'Y Gododdin', in old and modern orthography; an adjudication by Owen Jones ('Owain Myfyr') and Rob[er]t Hughes ('Robin Ddu o Fôn') on an elegy to Mr [Richard] Morys, President of the Honourable Society of Cymrodorion; 'Awdl ar y Testyn Jubili Mor-glawdd Tre' Fadog' by Dafydd Thomas ('D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri'), 1811; and 'Beirniadaeth Gymreig' being reviews ('Ad-olwg') by D. Thomas ('o Arfon'), 1812, of 'Awdl ar Amaethyddiaeth' by Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'] and a similar composition by Edwd. Hughes ['Y Dryw'], both submitted to an eisteddfod at Tre' Fadog, 1811. The text of the 'Gododdin' is in the hand of David Ellis (1736-95), vicar of Cricieth, and the remainder of the manuscript in the hand of David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri', 1759-1822).

Letters and miscellaneous papers comprising two letters [+], 1693, from Ch[arles] Owen, Oswestree to the Lady Archer near Epping in Essex (acknowledging all the expressions of her ladyship's extraordinary favours to him, mentioning that after a tedious ramble and censorious suspicions he came home in safety, the liberality of friends, 'Yet all this will not do for a Compensation for the injury done me', he desired his brother to assist Mr (?) Durrant in adjusting those wretched differences at Epping - her Ladyship's honourable attempts towards it); seven letters [+] from T[homas] Burgess, successively bishop of St Davids and of Salisbury, one written from C[orpus] C[hristi] C[ollege], Oxford, 1787, to T[homas] Falconer, Esq'r, Chester (thanking him for the present of his little book, requesting the addressee's opinion on the meaning of a passage from the Gospels and quoting from the preface to a second edition of the [Salisbury] spelling-book), two, possibly three, written from Abergwilly Palace and London, 1813-14, to the Reverend T. W. [recte T. D.] Fosbrooke, Walford, near Ross (commending the addressee's intention of publishing a 'cheap comment' on the New Testament, he seems to have taken up a very wrong conception of the Bible Society) and three written from Salisbury, 1831, to Mr Strong, bookseller, Bristol (instructions re books, was very sorry to see that the addressee has been a sufferer by the late disastrous events at Bristol); a copy of an engraved portrait of the Right Reverend Thomas Burgess, DD, Lord Bishop of Salisbury; a letter, year not given, from Joseph D[?ownes], Builth to [John Dix] (acknowledging the addressee's most welcome letter belying his wife's guesses, the indirect source of the addressee's recovery from misfortune if not illness, his own writing, mention of Edinburgh, etc.); a note, 1811, from Mr Pennant, Downing to a Mrs Williams (complying with her request on behalf of Hugh Shone and his aged wife); a list by J. H. The items marked + were formerly Phillipps MS 35051 (see letter dated 9 February 1973 from Dr A. N. L. Munby to the Keeper of Manuscripts, National Library of Wales). # - The wrapping paper has on it 'Phillipps MSS 34929' in pencil in the autograph of J. H. Davies but, with the exception of the 'inventory of goods', the contents of this package do not appear to correspond to the description of Phillipps MS 34929 as given by Dr Munby in his letter, although Phillipps MS 34929 was purchased by J. H. Davies.

A manuscript largely in the hand of Robert Hughes ('Robin Ddu yr Ail o Fôn', 1744-85), containing a transcript made in 1759 of 'Llyfr Barddoniaeth [y]n Cynwys Colofnau Cerdd Dafod ... O Gasgliad Myfyriad ag argraffiad John Rhydderch 1728 ...' 'Barsillai. Pregeth, a Bregethwyd Yn St Marie Aldermanburie; Yn Llundain. Gan Robert Harris; Gwyryf Difynyddiaeth. Ac a gyfiaethiwyd, o'r Saesoneg I'r Gymraeg, gan Robt. Hughes Athraw Ysgol ym Mhenmynydd', the translator's preface ('Y Darllenydd') being dated at Penmynydd 28 September, 1761; and lesser miscellaneous items, among them being an extract from 'Llyfr Y Weddi Gyffredin Yn ôl Athrawiaeth Ac Awdurdod Belzebub', 'A brief Introduction to Understand the New Invented Sliding Rule', Welsh and English poetry (of which one composition is dated 1763) and an incomplete and undated draft receipt from Elizabeth Griffith, wife of Wm. The volume was compiled during and immediately after the period 1788-9 and contains a draft of 'A short Account of the Life and Writings of Hugh (Huw) Morris [of Pontymeibion, Llansilin]'; poetry in strict and free metres by Huw Morys, Edward Samuel (Llangar), Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant'), Edward Llwyd, Elis Edwards, William Wynne (Llanganhafal), Hugh Jones (Llangwm), David Samwell, John Lloyd ('Vicar Llandrillo'), Daniel Davies (London), [John Roderick] 'Sion Rhydderch', Gryffydd ap Ivan ap Llewelyn Fychan, and Edwd. A transcript made by R[obert] Glover, Somerset Herald, in 1572 of a text of the 'Libellus de Officio Militari' of Nicholas Upton written by ('script per') Baddesworth in 1458. Blank spaces have been left for the appropriate blazons. The work was published under the title of Nicholai Uptoni de Studio Militari (Londini, 1654). The text is divided into the following four books 'Liber primus de Coloribus', 'Liber Secundus de Regulis et Signis in Armis depictis,' 'Liber tertius de animalibus et auibus in armis portatis ...', and 'Liber Quartus De Veteranis quos modo Heraldos appellamus'. At the beginning of the volume is a full-page blazon of the arms of Austen Steward, 1560 (or, a fesse chequy azure and argent, on an escutcheon of pretence of the last, a lion rampant gules debruised by a bend or), and at the end are seven folios of the biography and genealogy of the family of Steward (Stuard, Stuart, etc.) ('Transcriptum Geneologiae familiae Senescallorum in Anglia') ('...est geneologia Thome Steward et Rich'i filii sui breuiter extract' ex rotulis') compiled by John Moore, Norroy King of Arms, 1572, with later additions begun in 1714, and one page containing a list of English peers ('magnates Anglie') of the time of Elizabeth I and a scale of precedence. On the first page of the volume is an impression of a seal bearing a crest - before a stump of a tree, a sword, point downwards sinister, and the legend 'A.S. Fortiter defensa ob Scotica sceptra'. Each of the upper and lower covers bears four ornamental metal bosses, a blind tooling of the stump-of-tree crest, and additional gilt and blind tooling.

A composite volume of transcripts, biographies and miscellaneous notes almost entirely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans. They include 'Helfa Hawdd ei Hebgor' (published in Y Geninen, 1887, pp. 200-204) (with instructions to the printer in the hand of [John Thomas, 'Eifionydd']); 'Brigant, neu Chware'r Brigant'; 'Canau' or poems in free metres transcribed by H[ugh] B[rython] H[ughes], partly in [18]74; 'Buchedd Marthin Sant'; 'Biographia Cambrensis: Intended as A Supplement to "Enwogion Cymru" by D. Silvan Evans; 'Cronfa Mawddwy ... neu Manion Mawddwy: 1863', largely consisting of rough notes on Welsh etymology, dialect words, place and personal names, etc.; etc. Mounted in the volume is a holograph letter from the Reverend E[benezer] W[ood] Edwards, Ruabon Vicarage to [D. Silvan Evans], [18]64 (date (1820) of birth and christening of [Sir] W[atkin] W[illiams] Wynn). Manuscripts in the Llanover and British Museum collections are quoted as sources of several of the transcripts. The spine is lettered 'Manion Mawddwy'.

(I and ii). An interleaved copy in two volumes of The English Works of the late Rev. Eliezer Williams with a memoir of his life by his son St George Armstrong Williams (London, 1840), with corrections and annotations by the Reverend St George Armstrong Williams. (Iii). (A) Letters addressed to the Reverend Eliezer Williams (1754-1820), vicar of Lampeter (1805-20), from St G[eorge] Armstrong, Whitehaven, 1803 (personal finances, expectations of war, intends applying for a company in the Leitrim Militia), [Susan] Lady Blandford, undated (gift of books for addressee), Charles Bowdler, Lampeter, undated (invites Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), Aberystwyth, 1778 (the publication of writer's sermons and the addressee's subscription, writer's distrust of Evan James, hopes addressee and Richard Thomas will transcribe 'the Damhegion from the Llyfr Coch' for him, Sir Watkin [Williams Wynn]'s generosity, intends 'to print the Adagia Britannica and the Triades with Mr Vaughan of Hengwrt's notes in two volumes', hopes addressee, Mr Rice Jones and Mr Richard Thomas will help to obtain subscribers (published in D. A volume almost entirely in the hand of Mary Richards, Darowen largely containing poetry ('cywyddau', 'englynion', etc.) by Rowland Williams, Sion Philip, Guttun Owen, William Philip, Dr John Kent, Dafydd ap E[dmwnt], Edmwnt Prys, Robin Ddu o Fon, James Dwnid [recte Dwnn], Thom. Williams (1817), Iolo Goch, Ifan Tew Brydydd, Taliesin, Davydd ap Gwilim, Huw Arwystl, Hugh Morris, Edward Morris, Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], [David Richards, 'Dewi Silin'], Robert Parry (Eglwys fach), David Rowlands (Plas Isa, Dolgelley), Rev. D. Davies (Castle Caereinion), John Parry, Robert Davies (Nantglyn) and Hu ap Ier. ap Robert, and anonymous poems. Among other items included are a code of manners ('Dysg Vanners dda'); a pedigree of Oliver Cromwell; a drawing and a description of a brass object discovered at Hen fryn fawr near Caersiws [sic], Montgomeryshire, 1808, 'Teilyn[g]dod a theithi yr Iaith Gymraeg', etc. [from Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'): Cyfrinach Beirdd Ynys Prydain (Abertawy, 1829)]; and a diagram illustrating the civil order and the ecclesiastical order of the months. Much of the volume appears to have been written during the period 1817-18 but there are some personal and other memoranda dated to 1857. Some of the items appear to have been copied from NLW MS 2691 ('Llyfr Pant Phillip').
