The contents comprise a printed statement of Mrs Baily’s case, 1821, with a copy of a petition to Lord Viscount Melbourne, and letters by Katherine Baily at Aldersgate Street and King’s Bench, concerning the damage to her family’s reputation, her appeal to Lord Euston, naming various other government ministers with an interest in the case; and a reply to her from Pryse’s aunt, J.M. Title deeds mainly relating to properties in the township of Mathrafal [parish of Llangynyw], Montgomeryshire, 1582-1697. Most of the deeds concern properties purchased by Evan Meredith, which descended to his son David Evans. They include the marriage settlements of David Deckyn and Jane vch Thomas ap Ieuan 1582, and of John Deacon the younger and Alice vch Robert Taylor, 1624; a deed of sale by John Deacon and family to Evan Meredith of messuages in Mathrafal and Cynhinfa, including a walk mill, 1640; a mortgage by David Evans to Thomas Richards of a ‘Meas-place’ or ancient tenement called Tomkis Tenement and lands (named) in the township of Mathrafal, 1690, which had been conveyed [c. 1650] by Thomas Benion and Sara his wife to Evan Meredith, dec.; a mortgage by Thomas Richards to John Edwards of ?Roxington, Salop, as security for the payment of arrears of rent on a capital messuage in Llannerchrochwel, 1695; an assignment of the mortgage of Tomkis Tenement and its lands by Thomas Richards, then of Moedog, to John Harris of Stretton, Salop, 1697; and a mortgage by John Harris (who had purchased the property from the heir of David Evans) as security for the payment of £150 due to Thomas Richards, 1697. Other evidence of the debts of David Evans comprise an assignment in 1677 of premises in Hirnant and Trefedryd which he had previously mortgaged to David Charles; and assignments of two judgements obtained against him, 1691 and 1694. The file also contains a conveyance by Henry Smith of Yockleton, Salop, to William Harries of Alberbury, of Whittiniacks Coppys and the Banckcroft, Yockleton, 1610.

The contents relate mainly to the settlement of the debts of William Pughe, John Pughe, Thomas Pryse and John Pughe Pryse .They include accounts, rentals, and letters from agents and creditors. Items of interest include ‘John Pughe’s case’ [c. 1726], ‘debts and incumbrances of John Pughe’, 1744; Mr Powell’s charges for chief rents on Gogerddan, 1733-1744; a table of fees of the court baron of Cyfeiliog [1730s]; a case of trespass and ejectment in the court of the manor of Caereinion, 1737; rentals or rent accounts of Gogerddan, Cardigan Priory and Glanmeryn [c. 1737], Mathafarn, 1749, Cwm Cynvyl, 1774, Fynon Caradoc and Brynbanadle, 1755-1767, and chief rents of Gwynionydd Iscoed, (Watermark 1811); the bill of Doctor Alban Thomas for attendance on Thomas Pryse, 1744/5, an extract from the Gogerddan labourers’ book, 1751; and a letter to [Edward Loveden Loveden] from George Morgan of Brecon about the sale of the manor of Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn, 1781. The file also contains a draft family settlement by Richard Lloyd of Mabws [pre-1757].

Parry and the Office of Woods, schedules of rents and a deed for the purchase of the crown rents by the Brogyntyn trustees, all wrapped in a printed sale notice of property at Harlech, 1858-1878; a request and plan for a new house at Pant Dwr Oer, Beddgelert, 1873; the petition of Edward Lloyd concerning Harlech Lletty mines, 1875; a list of shareholders in Penmorfa Sett Quarry, 1876; a list of leases from Mrs Ormsby Gore of building land at Borth-y-gest and other places, commencing 1858-1874; leases, plans, and letters mainly by W.R. Original bundle of papers deriving from lawsuits brought in the High Court of Chancery by Martin de Carbonell and Justina his wife, plaintiffs, against Edward Pryse, Dame Dorothy Pryse and others, and subsequently by Carbonell’s executors, John Bontanden of St Anns, Blackfriars, London, John Guerrier of St Anns, Westminster, and Paul Jodrell of the Inner Temple against Lewis Pryse, 1696-1711. They relate to a claim on the personal estate of Sir Anthony Vandyke that was in the possession of Sir Richard Pryse (whose second wife was Mary, widow of Sir Anthony Vandyke and mother to Justina). The file includes letters to Edward Pryse mainly from Francis Meyricke and Thomas Barneby, 1696-1699; a decretal order of the High Court of Chancery, 1697; a bill of complaint and the answer of Lewis Pryse [1707], mentioning the doubtful validity of the will of Sir Carbery Pryse (d. 1694); and a bill of costs, 1711.

Large bundle of vouchers, account books, loose accounts and letters, 1856-1876, labelled ‘Papers relating to J.E. Parry’s estate taken from Mr Jones’s side table 18 April 1876’, referring to John Edward Parry, agent of the Glyn estate, Talsarnau. These papers also include a packet of vouchers from the Penrhos estate, Montgomeryshire, 1870-1871. The whole file has now been divided into six smaller bundles for convenience of handling. As expected, some of the content derives from J.E. Parry’s management of the Glyn estate. Many other vouchers and accounts relate to building work for J.E. Parry at Moelygarnedd, Bala, by Richard Roberts, William Evans, Edward Jones and others, 1872-1875; and there are traced plans of Moelygarnedd, 1873-1875. Other items include bank books of John E. Parry in account with the National Provincial Bank of England, and Cassons and Co, Portmadoc, 1856-1875; a licence to kill game, 1873; and a report by Howell Hedd Lloyd Clough and [?] Williams on the mineral lordship of Mold, 1872. The letters are mostly to or by J.E. Parry, and occasionally William Ormsby Gore. Correspondents include Parry’s agent or foreman, Richard Roberts (in Welsh) concerning the building work and grounds at Moelygarnedd, 1873-1875; T.H. Clough of Ruthin, about Parry’s request for a lease on the College Plantation, Bala, 1873; Robert Jones of Bryn Tegid on the necessity of widening Llanycil Bridge, 1875; and A.A. Passingham on behalf of the Local Board, requesting Moelygarnedd land to create a reservoir near Bala, 1875. The Penrhos estate vouchers relate mostly to building repairs and work on the timber plantations, 1870-1871.

Original bundle of papers and letters relating to Aberystwyth Borough and Corporation, 1706-1929. They refer mainly to the constitution and procedure of Aberystwyth Court Leet and the powers of the Corporation, particularly in the election of the mayor amd in the control of waste lands around the town; and the file includes a case and opinion of C. Abbott of Shrewsbury on those issues, 1815. Several letters and notices demonstrate the interest of the Powell family of Nanteos as lords of the manor of Aberystwyth and conflict with the Gogerddan interest. The file includes lists of Aberystwyth Corporation officers and of burgesses, 1706-1709 (certified 1729/30), 1812; a representation to the Commissioners of H.M. Customs on the dissolute behaviour of John James and Richard Lloyd; letters to Thomas Pryse, Edward Loveden Loveden and Pryse Pryse from William Williams, 1737, Uvedale Price of Foxley, 1795, Edward Horne of Lincolns Inn, Thomas Jones of Machynlleth, 1814-1823, and Rice Williams on his dispute over land near Brindiodde, 1827, a list of allotments granted, 1813, and a rental of new and renewed grants from the Corporation of Aberystwyth, 1821; a printed report of the committee appointed by the Council of the Borough of Aberystwyth, to inquire into the unappropriated land belonging to the Corporation, 1837; a petition to the Board of Guardians of Aberystwyth Union to sever the township of Trefeurig from the current district and attach it to Aberystwyth for the purpose of registering births and deaths [1849x1855]; and printed articles on the history of parliamentary representation, 1849, and on the former office of ragler (rhaglaw0 in Cardiganshire, 1929.
