A manuscript containing poetry mainly of the sixteenth and seventeeth centuries, the poets cited including Siôn Brwynog, Lewis Menai, Gruffudd Hiraethog, Wiliam Cynwal and Siôn and Rhisiart Phylip, but also including earlier poets such as Iolo Goch, Dafydd Nanmor and Guto'r Glyn. An index, with the poets' names arranged alphabetically, has been added at pp. 793-806 by Richard Morris in 1746.
Several of the poems have lines wanting at beginning and/or end or within the body of the works, have imperfect lines, or are left unfinished (e.g. those works beginning at pp. 68, 139, 206, 308, 361, 372, 414, 426, 429, 437, 439, 441, 444, 447, 451, 455, 571, 621, 746, 749).

Poetry,

A manuscript containing poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilym, Rhys Fardd, Iolo Goch, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd (Dafydd Llwyd, Mathafarn) and others. Ff. 83-134 contain transcripts, mostly in a modernised orthography, of pp. 9-62, 70 (l. 13)-102 of the Black Book of Carmarthen. F. 134 has the following note: 'Tro oddiyma rhagot 17 o ddalennau ac yno y cei di ychwaneg wedi ei scrifennu allan or llyfr du : ac yn dechreu Marwnad Madawc mab Mredydd'; however, there is no trace left of the leaves containing the material to which reference is made. Ff. 237-267 verso are in the hand of William Maurice, as is the note on f. 137 - 'O Lyfr Phylib Wiliams or Dyffryn'. The poem at ff. 135-136 is attributed by the scribe to Dafydd ap Gwilym, yet on its reproduction at f. 137 it is attributed to Gruffudd Llwyd ap Dafydd ab Einion [Lygliw]); this work is attributed in most manuscripts to Dafydd ap Gwilym - wrongly, as most students of Dafydd ap Gwilym would say.

Maurice, William, -approximately 1680

A manuscript containing The Burial of Arthur (ff. 505-508), Æsop's Fables (ff. 509-521), the Lives of St David and St Beuno (ff. 522-525b, 528-541), the Purgatory of Patrick (ff. 542-557), etc.

The text of 'Buchedd Beuno' is the same as that printed in Llyvyr Agkyr Llandewivrevi, p. 119, l. 23 to p. 127. One folio is missing near the beginning of the text of Breudwyd Pawl which differs from that in Llyvyr agkyr Llandewivrevi. The text of 'Purdan Padric' is practically the same as that printed by Canon Robert Williams (from Peniarth MS 5), but wanting p. 194, l. 31 to p. 196, l. 27, p. 201, l. 14 to p. 205, l. 3 and p. 209, l. 29 to p. 211. The writing resembles that of much of the Red Books of Hergest and Talgarth. The manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad' Vols I-III.

Poetry,

Poetry in praise of William Owen of Henllys (c. 1486-1574) and his son George Owen (c. 1552-1613), of George William Griffith (1584-1655?) of Penybenglog, Pembrokeshire and others. The text is in several hands; pp. 1-62 shows beautiful penmanship. Some of the poems are dated and several (Dafydd Emlyn (pp. 145, 161, 186), Dafydd Llwyd Mathew (pp. 149, 153), Gruffudd Hafren (p. 157), Harri Howel (p. 180), Robert Dyfi (p. 182), Siams Emlyn (p. 183) appear to be autograph. Pp. 129-136 are apparently in the autograph of R. Phillipp [Rhisiart Phylip]. Other cited poets include Iolo Goch, Dafydd Nanmor, Sion Mawddwy and Taliesin.

The poetical works of Lewis Glyn Cothi and Tudur Aled,

A manuscript containing the poetical works of Lewis Glyn Cothi, Tudur Aled, Tudur Penllyn, Sion Cent, Ieuan ap Tudur Penllyn, Rhys Cain and others. There is some controversy as to whether f. 137 contains work by Llewelyn ab Ieuan or by Deio ab Ieuan Du. The volume is labelled 'Odlau a Chywydda. A. 4°'.
Ff. i-ii, 137-143b are not in the same hand as the rest of the manuscript, and ff. 144b-146 are in a modern hand. Ff. 1-56 may be copied from Peniarth MS 109; the order of the poems is the same at first, but the readings do not always agree, and there are four poems in this manuscript which are not in Peniarth MS 109. Pp. 11-96 of Peniarth MS 77 are copied from this manuscript. William Salesbury or Sir T. Wiliems has written what looks like 'rhyderch ap Howel ap Dauyd' on f. 136b.

All but pp. 256-259, 265-268 and part of p. 198 are in the autograph of the grammarian Dr John David Rhys (1534-1609); his peculiar orthography begins on p. 13, l. 21. The poetical extracts vary in length from three to fifty lines. The lines selected are not always consecutive; they are even occasionally fragmentary, and many words are explained or glossed. The awdl on p. 256 is in a different but contemporary hand from that of Dr John David Rhys. For p. 265, cf. the text on pp. 22-24, which agrees in part. For the dating of this manuscript see p. 207.
The text printed in Dr John David Rhys's Grammar (London, 1592), pp. 297-298, 301-302, 303 (cols. ii and iii), pp. 300-301, p. 303, col. iv, p. 303, 'Nota', and p. 304 is taken from, respectively, pp. 199-206, 207, 207b, 213, 214, and 224 of this manuscript.
