NLW Deeds

  • GB 0210 NLWDEEDS
  • Fonds
  • [c. 1250]-1976

This is a series of deeds and documents of all kinds, currently running from number 1 to 1961, which have come to the Library singly or in groups too small to be treated as archives or collections. Less than 1 per cent of the Department's holdings of deeds and documents is comprised in NLW Deeds; the remainder will be found among archives or collections. Nevertheless, NLW Deeds includes some valuable documents. Several series which had existed in parallel with NLW Deeds were closed in 1981: NLW Wills, NLW Manorial, NLW Miscellaneous Records and a series known as 'Miscellaneous Documents' which had been arranged by county. The first two series have now been subsumed in NLW Deeds.

Llyfr Aneirin

  • NLW Llyfr Aneirin (Cardiff MS 2.81)
  • File
  • [13 cent., second ½]

A manuscript of the second half of the thirteenth century containing 'Y Gododdin', a series of awdlau lamenting warriors slain in battle at Catraeth, and believed to have been originally composed by Aneirin at the end of the sixth century (pp. 1-24). The awdlau are followed by four poems known as the gorchanau: Gorchan Tudfwlch (pp. 25-26), Gorchan Adebon (p. 26), Gorchan Cynfelyn (pp. 26-28) and Gorchan Maeldderw (pp. 28-38).
The manuscript was written by two scribes: scribe A (pp. 1.1-23.5, 25.1-30.11) and scribe B (pp. 23.6-24.21, 30.12-38.22). The hand of scribe B is also responsible for Peniarth MS 14, pp. 1-44 and Peniarth MS 17; see Ingo Mittendorf, 'Sprachliche und orthographische Besonderheiten eines mittelkymrischen Textes aus dem 13. Jahrhundert (Gwyrthyeu e Wynvydedic Veir)', in Akten des Zweiten Deutschen Keltologen-Symposiums, ed. S. Zimmer, R. Ködderitzsch and A. Wigger, Buchreihe der Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie, 17 (Tübingen, 1999), p. 129. Daniel Huws suggests the Cistercian abbey of Aberconwy as a likely location of the scriptorium; see Medieval Welsh Manuscripts (Cardiff and Aberystwyth, 2000), 75.

  • File
  • [14 cent., first ½], [15 cent., first ½]
  • Part of Brogyntyn manuscripts

A composite volume in two sections, the first, [15 cent., first ¼ (after 1401)] (ff. 1-18), containing the Anglo-Norman treatise on Seneschaucy (ff. 4-7), Walter of Henley's treatise on husbandry in Anglo-Norman (ff. 7-10), and various legal texts (ff. 1-4, 10-18 verso); the second, [14 cent, first ½], a defective copy of an unidentified Latin text on vaticination (ff. 19-24). The two sections were probably not bound together until after 1837.
Section i is written by a single hand, in anglicana, in uniform script in pale ink, apart from f. 18 verso, which was evidently filled later by the same hand. Section ii is written in anglicana by a single hand of the first half of the fourteenth century, in brown ink. There is no rubrication. The scribe exaggerates ascenders in top lines and decorates them with profile heads. There are six stabmarks in the inner margin.
