A volume of poetry transcribed by Lewis Owen [Tyddyn y garreg, Dolgellau, Merioneth] during the last quarter of the seventeenth century. It contains 'cywyddau', 'englynion', 'penillion', 'carolau', etc. by Lewis Owen, Rowland Owen, John Vaughan, William Phylyp, Dafydd Nanmor, Robin Du o fôn, John Owen, Owen Gwynedd, Sion Tydder, Bedo Brwynllysg, Jon. Phylip [Siôn Phylip], Hugh Lloyd Cynddel [recte Cynfal], Morys Dwyferch [recte Dwyfech], Dafydd ap Ifan ap Owen, Sion Dafydd Trefor [Syr Dafydd Trefor], John Brwynog, Thomas Pris [Plas Iolyn], Rowland Prys, John Davies ['Siôn Dafydd Las'], Sr. Reese, Sion Parry, Hugh Morris, Oliver Roger, Ellis Wynn, William Hu[m]ffr[eys], Robert Owen and [? At the end of the volume are a leaflet entitled 'Dirgelwch i'r Rhodianwr ar y Sabbath', published by 'Cymdeithas y Traethodau Crefyddol' [Religious Tracts Society] (No. 17) (mounted on the blank leaf of a letter addressed to the Revd. Mr [Thomas] Richards, Darowen), and 'englynion' by Sion Tudur (in the hand of Mary Richards [Darowen]) and Wa[l]ter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'].

The volume is almost entirely in the autograph of Margaret Davies [Coetgae-du, Trawsfynydd]. The 'cywyddau' have been numbered, possibly at a date later than the time of writing, and it appears that several folios are wanting at the beginning. The initials 'P. W.' or 'P. Wm.' sometimes occur at the end of a 'cywydd' near the name of the poet.

A third volume entitled 'Llyfr o Hen Ganeuon', being a continuation of MSS 166-7 and comprising largely of transcripts by J. H. Davies from manuscripts in the British Museum, in the Cardiff Central Library, in the National Library of Wales and in Jesus College, Oxford of 'carolau', 'dyrïau', 'englynion', etc. by Hugh Roberts, Sion Roger, Hugh Morris, Harri Llwyd, Rowland Vaughan, E[lis] Anwyl, Wm. Phylip, Huw Llwyd, Jo. Griffith [Llanddyfnan], W[atcyn] Clywedog, Hen. Bodwrda, G[ruffudd] N[annau], Gr. Ph[ylip], Ffouck Llwyd ('o Henllan'), Rich. Hug[hes] (Dick Hughes), Thom. Two volumes entitled 'Llyfr o Hen Ganeuon wedi eu cyfansoddi ers 200 mlynedd. 1900'. The volumes are in the hand of J. H. Davies and contain transcripts, with annotations and collations, of 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'dyrïau', 'englynion' and 'awdlau' from the Welsh School and Cymmrodorion groups of manuscripts in the British Museum Additional Collection (MSS 14866-15089). Among the insets are a folio from an eighteenth century manuscript containing an imperfect free-metre poem ('Can'), and transcripts of free-metre poems in the hands of J. Glyn Davies and E. A. Lewis of University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

A manuscript entitled 'Llyfr Ofer Gerddi Margaret Davies 1738', being a collection of 'carolau', 'dyrïau', 'Penillion', and 'englynion' compiled by Margaret Davies (c. 1700-85?), of Coetgae-du, Trawsfynydd, Merioneth. An analysis of the volume ('Bannau'r Llyfr hwn ... by the scribe describes the contents as follows: 'Y Part Cynta or Llyfr sydd O Garolau Maswedd gan mwya. Yna Cerddi ar amryw fesurau Er Gofyn amryw Roddion. Ac yna Dirifau ne ddyriau Mawl merched. Ychydig Alar Gerddi. Amryw fasweddgerdd I ferched Ac ar amryw fesurau. Englynion'. A commonplace book of Merioneth interest largely in the hand of Robert Prys Morris ('Robyn Frych'), Dolgellau. A mutilated early seventeenth century manuscript of poetry in strict metres in the hand of Thomas ap Edward (Edwardes). It contains 'cywyddau' by Roger Kyffine, David ap Gwilym, Owen ap Gwilim, Gwerfyl Mechain, y Doctor John Kent, Gruffyth ap Ieuan ap Lle'n Vychan, Ieuan Klywedog, John Fylip, Iolo Goch, H[u]w Dyfy, Moris ap Howel ap Tudur, William Kynwall, Ieuan Dyfi, Howell Kilan, Gvto or Glyn, Gruffyth Hiraethog, Ieuan ap Gruffyth Leia, Robin Ddv, David ap Edmwnd, D'd Nanmor, Sr Rys ap Hary, Tydvr Alet, and Ieuan Lla[var] and anonymous 'cywyddau'; and 'englynion' by sion Tud[u]r, [ ] Lwyd, Moris ap Ieuan ap D'd and Hugh ap Moris, and anonymous 'englynion'. The scribe gives his descent (f. 19b) as Thomas ap Edward ap David ap Ieuan bach ap Egion ap Ho'll ap Kynfrig ap Lle'n ap Madok ap Ieuan ap Lle'n ap Kynfrigg ap Ririd ap Riwallon ap Kynvyn ap Gwrstan [ap] Gwaith Voed and he has also (f. 34b) entered the dates of the birth of his children, Katterin (12 October 1612), Thomas (7 June 1615), and Jane (11 January 1613/14). A portion of the volume (ff. 30b-56b) and the marginal notes have been transcribed by Owen Jones ('Manoethwy', 1838-66) in Cwrtmawr MS 401, pp. 1-25.

A fragment of a medieval Welsh manuscript containing poetry.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing miscellaneous biographical and bibliographical extracts and notes from printed sources and from manuscript volumes in the British Museum, the National Library of Wales and elsewhere, including material relating to the abbots of Conway, Ystrad Marchell (Strata Marcella), Strata Florida and Llanegwestl (Valle Crucis); Welsh pedigrees; and manuscripts containing poetry, largely by Tudur Aled.

Five files of unbound leaves containing titles and first lines of poems by mediaeval Welsh strict metre bards. The bards are arranged in alphabetical order of names and, in their present order, Cwrtmawr MSS 726-7 and Cwrtmawr MSS 728-30 appear to comprise two separate indexes. The compiler - inferentially working on manuscripts in the British Museum - has not recorded the shelf and page numbers of their source material; however, there are some such references and other insets and additions in the hand of J. H. Davies.

There are a few entries by Peter Bailey Williams (1821), and also by St Geo[rge] Armstrong Williams, who has included a short biography of Lewis Morris.

A volume of poetry, chiefly in strict metre, written largely in the autograph of Owen Gruffydd (?1638-1730) between 1677 and 1692. Most of the poems are by Owen Gruffydd, but the following poets are also represented: Robin Ddu, Dafydd Gorllech, John Roger, Sion Phylip, Sypyn Cyfeiliog, Dafydd ap Gwilym, William Phylip, Gyttyn Owain ('medd rhai' 'Meredydd ap Rhys' in another hand), Ifan Tew Prydydd, Huw ab Iva[n], Bedo Brwynllysg, Edmwnt Prys, Edward Morys, Matthew Owen and Hugh Morys. There is a list of contents at the beginning and the poems have been correspondingly numbered. There are 'penillion' by William Elias on p. 309b. John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') has supplied a lacuna in the manuscript from Peniarth MS 124. Almost all the 'cywyddau' in this manuscript, but not the 'englynion' and the poems in free metre, are to be found also in Peniarth MS 124, which is later in date than the present manuscript and written in a different hand. The pages have been numbered by Dr J. Gwenogvryn Evans and his report on the manuscript is in J. Gwenogvryn Evans MS 70a (under 'M[yrddin] F[ardd] 5'). If the information given on pp. 1 and 50 is correct, Owen Gruffydd was born in 1638. A note at the end (p. 238) of his elegy to Sir Roger Mostyn (d. 1690) states that the poet received fifty shillings for the 'cywydd'. There is a folio missing after p. 36 and another is wanting before p. 53.

They comprise 'Gofuned Llythyr Dewi Fardd at ei Etholedig Gyfeillion'; a letter from David Jones to his friends ('Frodur a Chwiorydd yn ol y Cnawd'), 1751/2 (the writer's association with Methodism) (published in Cymru, 1907, pp. 185-6) (together with verses [?on 'Breuddwyd Gwion']; poetry by Rhys Goch o Ryri, Richiart Parry, T[homas] E[dwards] ('Twm o'r Nant') Humphrey William, Lloyd Ragad, Dafydd Jones (Dafydd Sion Dafydd), Morys Dwyfech, Edmund Price 'Arch diagon', and Ellis Robert, and anonymous 'carolau' and 'cerddi'; an extract from a treatise on herbs; letters to David Jones from Tho[ma]s Edwards ['Twm o'r Nant'], Pen isa'r dre [Denbigh], 1766 (a parcel for the recipient and the enclosed writing), William Sion 'o fyrun sauth ymlwy maun twrog' [Maentwrog] undated (the delivery of books to Owen Dafydd 'o faun twrog'), Dafydd Ellis, Ty du, 1766 (the sale of books on behalf of the recipient), Owen Roberts, 1778 (the publication of an interlude), Roger Thomley, Flint, 1746 (enclosing 'englynion', a desire to visit the recipient), Hugh Evans, Caernarfon, 1768 (the receipt of a book of 'cywyddau', subscriptions towards the printing of Blodeugerdd [Cymry] and Drych y Cymro), and Richd. Much of the contents of the manuscript was transcribed by David Evans, Llanrwst in Cwrtmawr MS 117.

A composite volume from the collection of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') written in several hands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and comprising ten main sections: (I) The first section (pp. 1-121 and some unnumbered items) contains poetry by Tomas Edwards Nant, S[ion] Owen, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn Eifion' [sic] and (mainly) Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu'), some possibly in his autograph. Other items include a list of books ('Catalek of all ye books that I Have'), some accounts headed 'Cost Capel garn talwyd' and 'heb Daly am Capel garn', observations entitled 'Lwybr Dyn neu Ysdyriaethau ar bedair rhan oes Dyn' by Robert Williams, a letter, 1845, from Ellis Owen, Cefn y Meusydd, to Mr Robert Williams, Bard, Bettws fawr, Llanystumdwy, containing verses by Robert ab Gwilym Ddu entitled 'Pererindod o'r Aipht i Ganaan; and a list of poems by ['Robert ap Gwilym Ddu']. There are also some press cuttings and other additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). (Ii) A memoir of David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') by and in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). (Iii) Miscellaneous items including 'Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd', poetry by Huw Llwyd Cynfal, Dafydd ap Sion and y Parchedig Mr Goronwy Owen o Fôn, and draft of a letter from 'Dyngarydd' [?David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') ] to Mr Gomer' [? for Seren Gomer ], and 'A Memorandum Book' in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') containing notes on natural history, etc. in English transcribed from various printed sources. (Iv) Notes in Welsh in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') on theological subjects including extracts from 'Patrick's Places' i.e. the work of Patrick Hamilton, followed by short accounts of Phoenicia, Palestine, Assyria, Babylon, etc. (V) An incomplete poem entitled 'Carol Plygain am Bwrcas Crist tros eu [sic] Ddyweddi ...... (Vi) Two items in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') entitled 'Cyfrifiad byr am amryw o enwau neu Sectau a ymddangosasant yn y byd' (? incomplete) and 'Ateb i rai holiadau, mewn Llythyr oddi wrth yr Ysgrifennydd at ei ewythr John Roberts', which last item includes observations by Michael Roberts on one of the questions. (Vii) This section consists of sixteen pages and one loose folio. The first fourteen pages are in the autograph of William Elias, c. 1731-44, and contain poetry by Evan ap Llywelyn Vychan (beginning wanting), D. Parry, William Elias, J. Rhydderch, Owen Griffiths and D[afydd] N[anmor]. The next two pages contain verses in English by Gr: Lloyd and the loose folio contains 'englynion', one by Moris ap Evan ap Dafydd ['Morus Dwyfech']. A note at the foot of p. 9 reads 'Oed ein harglwydd, pan dorwyd, y ffordd y mynydd Bwlch Derwin gynta, 1739, y rhan isa, ai gorphen: Mehefin 18: 1740: Wm Ellias, a Griffith Davidd o fodychen, overseers', and there is a recipe for making ink on p. 10. (Viii) 'Englynion' by Edward Charles and a number of Welsh hymns (author's name not given). (Ix) This section is in the autograph of John Roberts [?'Siôn Lleyn'], 1767, and contains poetry by Roger Thomley, Michel Prichiard, Sion Thomas Bod-edern, Gwen Arthur, William Elias, Owen Griffith, John Philip, John Roberts, Hugh Roberts, Thomas Jones, Rich[ar]d Parry niwbwrch, ? W. Ell... and John Rogar [sic]. (X) Veterinary and other recipes, mainly in Welsh.
